Salt 1950 Journal May 26 Boca Spring 6000 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. spring - Mt. chickadees come in to drink at the spring more frequently than other species Saw 3 Clarke nutcrackers flying over - also a group of 4 or 5 Violet-green (or tree) swallows flying around the tops of the tallest pines - Picolated (?) warbler working through the willow - Pinyon nuthatches paired and calling back + forth - Juncoes feeding on ground around spring, singing also - at dusk mourning doves flew in to meadow by us - I also heard some calling - A poor-will flew through camp after dark singing (calling) while in flight - Heard several more near - Their note here is not the same as in San Luis Obispo Co.. there it is a e e e or ^ ^ ^ low + soft - Here it is higher, more persistent v v v v - Also heard a single noted clear whistle repeated over + over which we guessed to be a saw-whet owl. but hunting for both species netted no specimens - Dixon + Bailey set out some live traps. May 27 A perfectly fruitless day - With the exception of a short walk for about an hour 9:30 to 10:30 I have done nothing but watch this foul spring which has apparently been
