Salt 1947 journal Cottonwood Springs, Elev. 3000', Riverside Co., Calif. April 26 Calaveras Warbler, Long-tailed Chat, (cont.) Black-headed Grosbeak, Western Tanager, Verdin, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Turkey Vulture, Green-tailed Towhee, Audubon Warbler, Solitary Vireo. April 27. Broke camp about 8:00 AM and drove to sand dune area in Pinto Basin. Pinto Basin, 3mi S, 1½ mi W., Pinto Peak, Elev. 1200', Riverside Co., Calif April 27. Arrived about 9:30 AM, parked truck and hiked to sand dune about 1 mi. east of road from Cottonwood Spring to 29 Palms at foot of Pinto peak (west slope). Area in flat area of Pinto basin at that point uniform coarse sand and gravel generally packed firmly Creosote bushes and galeta grass alternate in evenly- evenly spaced clumps about 4 to 6 feet apart. Sky was clear with no clouds when we started walking. Temperature was fairly warm but only got hot just about mid-day at which time clouds collected and shut off sun for short periods keeping the temperature only moderate.
