Sept. 5. Checked steel taps. No signs of activity at either
set. Continued through the notch to main canyon
of Martinez Canyon and started north south.. It was
about 6:45 when I reached the canyon bottom.
Sun was up and shining on east facing wall of
canyon but not into bottom. Saw Bell
Sparrows., Goldfinches, and Titmice at pool.
Heard Heard Mountain Quail calling from dense
covered west facing slope of canyon. Continued
north along canyon bottom. Black Phoebes, Towhees
of both kinds, Jays and chipmunks were
active. After passing several other pools, reached
the pool above the waterfall-site where Dehnel
and I had to leave the canyon bottom on
our hike north south yesterday. Found it to
be about 25' long, 12' wide at widest place, and
about 3' deep at one spot. There were a
few spots of grass, a large clump of Canex,
and a few Sycamore saplings.. Otherwise
it was just a depression in the conglomerate
rock. Found two small gray Hyla in the
water there. They look like Hyla arenicolor
to me but I may be over hoping.
Started back to camp. Shot a Canyon
Wren and near camp, a Rufous-crowned
Sparrow in the juniper adenostoma on
the burned over section near camp.
