Salt 1947 Journal 3/2 mi E, 1/2 mi N, McChesney mtn., 1900 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Caly. Sept. 7. Dohnel & went to spring west of camp again to try for the mountain quail. Waited at the spring from 6:30 till 8:00 AM. Again saw no quail. Hutton Vireo hopped around while we were sitting there. After 8 shot a Rock Wren and an Arkansas goldfinch which appeared darker than ordinary though not so black on back as the one from Cottonwood spring. Ran Dohnels trap line with him. Heard Mountain Quail call from brush 50 yards up hill from us in thick manzanita tangle but couldn't get a location & didn't see any. Went back to camp and then walked down small canyon north of cabin. Saw six fiddance watering at same time at pool of water there. Continued alone to junction of main catin and & canyon I was in. Went up on hill east of junction in Eriodictson and juniper brush. Collected a Rufous-crowned sparrow. Two Ravens flew over but didn't get a shot at them. Two hunters up here today shot at a bobcat in this area this morning. Skinned the rest of the day. McMillans both arrived. Dr. Miller shot Soreech Owl.
