Camnath Creek, 1450 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Calif.
Aug 31. There were no mammals in those traps I
set in the manzanita grove. Apparently, although
the Perognathus have had manzanita berries
in their pouches, it takes more than just
the bushes to pull them into an area.
Skinsed [illegible] birds until 2:00 PM. The temperature
I would estimate was about 85°F or 90° so
Dehnel and I went to a Digger Pine
grove north of camp to look for Xantusia.
We looked in several situations under the
fallen pine logs; in the flat regions at
the mouth of canyon where the stands of
pine were thickest and mixed with Blue
Oak, on sandy hillsides where the logs
were mixed with manzanita, and in
pure stands of Digger Pine. No Xantusia.
No herbs of any kind.
Then drove to water tank and collected
5 Linnets. Took a swim with the whole
gang later. Rebaited the trap for the
Badger. Something at a hole in the
squirrel carcass hand hanging over the
traps. Wired a squirrel carcass to bushes
for bait.
Heard a poorwill singing after dinner.
We went out to look, but couldn't
find him.
