Edge 1934 Itinerary June 27th 2 mi. SW Pine Grove, 7250 ft., Mineral Co. Nevada Left Berkeley Calif at 9 a.m. June 26, 1934 in three cars. Party seven persons: Brode, J. Stanley, Edge, Elton R., Hearths Dawson A., Hall C. Raymond, Johnson, David H. Palmer, Fletcher G., Russell, Ward C. Drove via Parquinez Bridge, Sacramento, Placerville, South and Lake Tahoe, Glenbrook, Parson City, Minden, Gardnerville to a point in the hills about 15 mi. S of Gardner ville where we slept beside the road. Left our overnight camp at 6 am. and drove via Wellington eastward along the West Walker River into Mason Valley, thence southward to a point 4 1/2 miles N. E. of Pine Grove, turned right and drove up a canyon past Pine Grove to camp site as given at head of page. Arrived here about 11:30 a.m. Started putting out traps about 4:30 p.m. beginning at a point up the canyon about two hundred yds above the camp and going in an easterly direction up a small canyon S. side - about returning to camp along the N side and over the top of the ridge. 40 goat sized mouse trap, and 3 rat traps were used.

Itinerary 28th. 1934 June 27 cont'd. Appx. 25 traps were placed in Artemisia at the bottom of the canyon - space on an average of about 8 paces. The remaining traps were irregularly distributed in the Pinon and among patches of broken rock - Soil: Sandy loam rock. June 28. Took 14 mammals from trap line, species as follows. 14 P. maniculatus sonorensis - Visited trap line 1°° p.m. - twenty five traps out - 15 in Artemisia - 10 in fragmented rocks at top of ridge - Total specimens 3 Mammals and 1 green tailed towhee - mammals as follows - 1 Palospermophilus lateralis trepidus, 1 Otomys minimus and 1, Eutamias quadrivittatus shot one Male W. Tanager. Drove up Canyon S with Hall to point about 2 miles S of Camp. Set out traps at three places, 20 trap (got mouse) set farthest out 7800 ft in low Artemesia with occasional pinon pines - soil sandy loam with considerable amount of broken rock present 12 traps were put out about 1/3 mi back along road towards the camp - vegetation much same except

Itinerary Edge 1934 June28 cont'd even spacers up the hill - Soil same. 15 traps were put out about half way back to Camp- Artemesia 7600ft. here was thicker and of taller growth, occasional Pinon Pines occured. Soil; Sandy loam. June29 Took up traps put out with Hall Total 21 Mammals - 19 P. maniculatus 2 P. truei. With respect to Pine Grove this location was about 3 1/2 miles 5 W of Pine Grove and Specimens are so labeled. Those from the last station, i.e. Nearer Camp 2 3/4 miles 5 W Pine Grove and elev. 7600 ft. Took up traps that had been out all day yesterday about 8 am - 15 traps in Artemesia yielded 5 P. maniculatus, 9 traps in rock outcrop top of ridge yielded nothing. Put out 44 traps - 41 got mouse - 3 rat N of Camp in Sage brush and open hillsides among Pinons - soil sandy loam in former, and sand, broken rock and rock outcrop in latter. Spaced about 7 paces. June30 Took up traps south of Camp- total 15 mammals and 1 junco, Mammals as follows - 2 Perog. parvus and 13 P. maniculatus The tall fairly dense Artemesia appeared to afford best trapping.

Itinerary Edge 1934 June 30th Contd. Put out 3 double gopher sets North of camp about 7:00 am, took two T. quadratus by 1:00 p.m. This Camp is located in what appeared to be the upper part of the Pinyon belt in steeply rolling country of alternate ridges and narrow valleys. The hillsides near the camp have a fairly dense growth of Pinyon pines, the valleys support a more or less dense growth of Artemesia with some Chrysothamnum scattered here and there - On some of the higher and rocky hillsides only a meager growth of low Artemesia occurs. On the highest summits Mountain Mahogany occurs - The pail varies - In the valleys there may be sandy loam, on the hillsides this is mixed with a great deal of fragmented rocks. On the sides of the ridges and on the tops frequent outcrops of a volcanic type of rock can be found. Water is not abundant but an occasional spring or seepage appears and in their vicinity a small patch of meadow usually

Generary Edge 1934 June 30 cont'd occurs. This has a thick carpet of short grass - The shortness may be due to sheep grazing - Large numbers of sheep apparently pasture thru this entire region earlier in the season. There are numerous prospect holes in the vicinity and the country around Pine Grove has been had the vegetation somewhat Modified by Man, as there are several large Mines (gold) there which give evidence of having employed a considerable number of men years ago. The road in thru Pine Grove is fairly steep in a number of places as well as rough - but No difficulty was encountered in getting over it. Bog Itinerary 1934 July 5th Cont'd - not disturbed and no tracks near. July 6th Hunted birds this morning 10 1/2 mi S Morrington, W. Walker River, Lyon Co., Nev. Birds seen but not already recorded in itinerary or Catalogue: Bush-tit, Navy? woodpecker. 3 Steel traps across river from Camp un molested. This camp was located along side of the river on relatively low sandy ground. There were numerous Cotton woods and willows along the bank with Atriplex back from the river. The valley was two or three hundred yards wide at this point narrowing to a gorge about 1/4 mile [illegible] west of the camp. Stony and gravelly ridges rose in succession to the main ridges perhaps 800 to 1000 ft above the river. Several irrigation ditches are on each side of the river - with cottonwoods and willows on either bank. The river itself had a fairly rapid fall with rocky bottom in most place altho [illegible] and there in quieter parts the bottom and shores were sandy. Birds were fairly numerous in the trees and willows near the river. Soon tracks were observed at several places along

Edge 1934 Itinerary July 6th The river - now taken. July 7th Took up the Bsteel traps - no results. Broke Camp after Breakfast and proceed via Alington to Shurz. The road was thru the valley - many Alfalfa fields with occasional waste lots until we started over a low range of hills about 12 miles NW of Shurz - this type of country lasted until almost into Shurz - The vegetation was dominantly Atriplex of dwarf growth on the slopes and hill sides. Camp was established 3 mi S of Shurz 4100ft., Mineral Co., Nev. 45 traps (govt) were set out 7 mi NW of Shurz, 4500ft., Mineral Co., on sandy slope mixed with a small fragmented black rock - the vegetation was low- Atriplex. 9 traps govt were put out N of Camp in Sandy soil good growth of Atriplex Received first mail of the trip this afternoon. July 8th 45 traps, 7 mi. NW Shurz, 4500ft., yielded 9 mammals as follows: 6 Perog. longimembrio 2 Dip. Microps levipes, 1 O. l. brevicandus. No black microdipods as predicted by Russell.

Edge 1934 Itinerary July8th cont'd. 9 trap N of camp - 3 mi S Shiny 4/00 ft. yielded 3 mammals - 2 P. maniculatus 1 Perog. longimembris- In afternoon walked around camp and shot a hairy woodpecker, an Ammosterophilus and a leopard lizard. 45 days Set out 135 gout traps in sand North of camp - Sand soft and deep in many places with large Chrysothamnus and Atriplex. 10 traps along river? banks in willows and small cottonwoods Shot a bat Pipistrellus. July9th Took 12 mammals - 9 in sand north of camp: 2 micro dipodops and 7 Dip. Merriami and 3 P. maniculatus. Shot a black throated sparrow and a barn swallow. In late afternoon visited East shore of Weber Lake - about 8 mi S. Shiny, the shore line has receded markedly apparently with recent times as all show lines are conspicuous - There are wide bands of gravel separating zones of pond - the sand zones seem well populated with P. ordii apparently in the lowest zone - Looks like it would be an excellent place to study succession. A number of birds were observed on the lake - gulls, cormorants and white pelican.

Page 1934 Itinerary July 10th Put out 8 gopher sets along the river this morning - up stream from camp. Shot two lazuli humming and an Ammo. Took four gopher by 1:00 pm and one more about six pm [illegible] to Shot two bats at twilight. This Camp lies in a fairly broad valley with just seven thousand foot mountains to the west and a range of somewhat lesser altitude to the east. The general nature of the valley is Sandy with Atriplex - Chrysophanmus and Chaenopodium of rather luxuriant growth in many places - There are many areas of soft sand which seems to shift about a little with longing winds - The lower land close to the river is cut into small Indian farms in many places and the river bombs out possibly 1000 yds in some places support a growth of large Cottonwood trees. Our Camp was located in one of the groves and it proved to be a pleasant one. The river here is very shallow - but by digging [illegible] the middle of the stream we made a place to bathe.

Edge 1934 July 11 Took up gopher traps this morning - nothing in the traps - The five live traps have not yielded any result tho have had them out around Camp for several nights. Left Bridge Camp before noon and left for Mt Grant via Shung - The country was barren and rocky as the road followed the west shore of the lake but many of the cliffs contained caves and large crevices - no animal life was noted but a number of aquatic birds were observed on the lake. The road up Cottonwood Canyon was about 10%o grade with willows and cotton woods along the little creek that runs down the canyon - about a mile after turning off the main road and into the canyon we encountered the pinions which extended from about 5500 to about 7500 ft. A Camp of C.C.E workers are widening and improving the road - Above the pinyons sage brush Antemaria and patches of mountain mahogany occur - the country is not precipitous but many rocky outcrops and points occur - We camped at Lapan Canyon 8900 ft. Mt. Grant, Mineral Co., Nev.

Live traps set near tent yielded 1 minutat, P. maniculatus. Traps at rock outcrop 4 mile W camp yielded nothing - In sage Artemesia above bog saw a white crowned Sparrow with two young able to fly a little. Shot into a flock of about 15 Horned larks, on meadow south of bog and killed two - Took 3 gophers from the gopher sets. Left 34 gort trap in the bog about 150 yds S E of

Several of the Microtus has spoiled from exposure to the sun Took 2 mod Microtus at six pm when the location of a number of the traps were put out three gopher sets on the way to the bog. July 14 - Took up steel traps & gopher traps - nothing. Took up the 45 traps from the bog - 11 mammals - 2 P. maniculatus and 9 Microtus montanus. Made sketch of Microtus burrows and runways. Page 1934 Itinerary Scattered pinon grows on the narrow floor of the valley - while a fairly heavy stand of pinion cover the E and W. slopes of the valley - Willows and bridle rose bushes line the banks of the smaller creeks which enter Cottonwood Creek. Mahogany can be seen from camp about three or four hundred feet up the E slope. July 15th Took 11 mammals from the traps this morning: 2 Notoma cinerea, 1 Thomomys quadricetus, 1 Merotus monax, 7 P. memendatus and 1 food from a trap in Cottonwood Creek near the camp.

Eoas 1934 Peromyscus maniculatus June 28 am. 5 W Pine Grove, 7250 ft. Mineral Co. Nevada: Caught 14 in 40 traps set in Artemisia, in Piñon pines and in broken rock areas from canyon floor to summit of ridges. Approximately 1/3 were young and immature. June 29 Caught 24 in about 81 traps, 5 from locality trapped over June 28th and 19 from points 3½ miles SW and 2¾ mi SW of Pine Grove, the majority from the former, the type of country much the same, i.e. Artemisia, Piñon and the soil sandy loam mixed with varying amounts of fragmented rocks - young and immature made up from 1/3 to ½ the catch. June 30 Took 13 in 44 traps approx 1/3 young- showed preference for tall relatively dense Artemisia. July 2. Took 4 along river banks and willows and out in Atriplex in rocky gravelly areas - 50 traps July 3 Took 8 in 40 traps - taken down in river bottom along irrigation dikes and on stony hillsides.

Took one in rock outcrop surrounded by sage brush - west of camp about 1/4 mile.

Onyx chomyleucogaster brevaudus July 8. 7 mi NW Shurz, 4100 ft., Mineral Co. Nev. Took one on west side of road - sand mixed with small block gravel - dwarf Atriplex - ground sloped west towards higher ridges. 45 traps.

Pipistrellus hesperus- July 9, 3 mi. S Shurz, -100ft., Mineral Co. Yes. Shot as flying around trees shortly after sunset - They are fairly numerous here among the Cotton wood trees and especially along the river - a few are out hunting well before sunset! Most numerous shortly after sunset.

Edge 1934 Alamospermophilus lucurus- 3 mi S Sherz-4100ft. Mineral Co. Nev. July 8th Shot one in Ctripley, sand belt north of camp. July 10th Shot one near Cottonwood trees west of camp. They are fairly numerous here - especially on the road to Sherz about two miles out where there is a barley & an alfalfa field next to the road.

Thomotyp quadrates Edge 193d June 30 2 mi. SW Pine Grove, 7250 ft. Mineral Co., Nev. 2 taken in small patch of meadow at spring just N of Camp - 1 from 3 double sets. Soil - black loam with small pieces of broken rock - July 12th Mt Grant, Sappin Canyon 8900 ft., Mineral Co Nev. Took two in thick grassy meadow by the camp - Impressed me as being a little browner than those at Pine Grove. July '3 - Took three in grassy meadow SE of camp about 100 yds - 3 sets - Several of the mounds examined had three runways leading from the mound. Soil seems to be very fine grained loam, mounds are fairly numerous in the narrow meadow or band of grass that lies on each side of the small brook which runs up the valley - In many places on the hillsides in Artemisia filled in snow runway could be found. These cylindrical structures generally ran transversely across the slope of the hill so that they should check rapid run off of water. Noted a few recent mounds out in the Artemesia, July 15 Cottonwood Creek 7400 ft., Mt Grant, Mineral Co., Nev. Took one in small meadow at top of first E slope 150 yds North of Camp - Several other Volants noted there.

Edge 1934 Thomomys bottae July 10 - 3 mi. S Shung 4100 ft Nueces Co. Tex. Took three adults and one immature along river bank about 200 yds west of camp. Soil quite sandy supporting a straggling growth of young cotton-woods - burrows are in damp sand about a foot and a half above the river water level. Took one more immature at six p.m. from one of the traps moved at 1pm. It appears seems that breaking open the burrow disturbs the animal if he is resting near - if he's too far away to be disturbed he probably isn't using that section of the burrow - as a result any long set in one burrow is not likely to be profitable?

Microtus montanus O faecal pellet. July 13th Lamon Canyon 8900ft Mt Grant Minard Co. Nev. Took five - 3 adults - 2 immatures from 27 golf traps set in log about 150 yards SE of the Camp - There are numerous turlocks or mounds thru which burrows run and between which the burrows run - cut grass and faeces are common in the runway - The more frequently used runways appear to be those not saturated with water nor yet dried out. The seepage which causes the burrow extends along the base of the hill - N and S for about 100 yards - Artemesia starts immediately above the seepage line - July 14 made sketch of sq meter of typical runways and burrows (looks opposite page) found a little dried grass in central burrow. pressed specimen of same - it is the common grass around the runway - a number of other mounds dug open but only a couple of thin grass lined, slightly enlarged places in the burrows found - All found had two or more openings. Faeces appeared to be accumulated in certain spots as tho the animals might have had a definite place for this purpose.
