From R.R station at Stanton, 1/3 mi. N on main road, and 100 yds east. Black shale, top, contact with base of Waverly, along E+W road. Judge Hardinick's place. 72. Half a mile west of Shawnee station at western corner of Clay city, 4ft ferruginous limestone with crude chert. 1ft soft weathering rock, with snails (Chenoplychina) in lower part, 20ft ferruginous limestone which ferruginous limestone with black nodules and fish remains in lower part. Near top of bezora clay with thin layer of clayey rock with vertical worm borings With 2 feet of top of bezora ocon Favrites favosus and several cyathophylla crass, In 20 in layer spirifer franklini. 43. According to John Grif at Tipton's Ferry, Devonian limestone occurs almost 20 feet above level of river, 1/2 miles SW of Clay city. 44. At mile post 30 miles from Lexington, Heterisangia, gastropoda, lamellibranch, and Platystrophia sili sandy and clayey beds at top. Platystrophelia + Bryozoans in their beds beneath. 45. Tom Wilkibbot about 1/4 mi. E of 30 mile post. Just east of linee along railroad is first exposure of Platystrophelia lynx. Below which across cornfield is spring. Platystrophelia lyncx here also at stream level. Three fine thick section with Platystraphelia lynx. 46. Clint on at top of six exposures. Consider- able Bidium m K exposure in cut Strophaneura silcata canum, Helotella serrata with dorsal sines, as in madamme called accidentals. Platystrophia tipinata. Maco Shingle Tile, Thronton & Ross, McCullan Ho. 5 ft of clay overlies the Black shale at the shingle tile work; 6 in. I am not verifying this is stripped away. Clay dug, soak it, leave overnight for drain tile, brick, shingles. Next day clay is shovelled into the disintegrators. Then cray at me present if clay is crushed, fragments crushed down to 7/6 inch. Carried by belt from disintegrator to to the tile wheel. The clay is pushed out of the tile wheel through the chutes where the profile thickness and weight is given to bricks, shingles, &c. The clay pushed at to corners to cut off tails, where these objects are cut off to perfect lengths. Clay for shingle + anything I & dressed, is shaped up at least 2 days, cooked to oil cloth, to get evenly moist = winter temper. Can be kept all winter. Then it is pressed. Shingles, &c. In case of shingles the wheelhead is stationary, and there 3 clams dries plies are runnable after black shingle is prepared i,

Base not seen. 14 ft Wst/nelida bed is fill of a large thin band of limestone. 2½ ft I understand the Whaffsela ella layer, before this new clayey west comes in topmost. 19½ ft beds thicker at base here. 5 in. White middle full for 34 parts, 3¾ ft irregular Clinton. 54 ft clay part of Richmond in the Lown well then traces of lime stone, apparently formed after depositing clay are formed in clay and recede some the clay in beds, a small limestone in certain parts. 9 ft from top of Whaffsela top clay l. Relative to strata at Calacaecia Streptoceras Streptoceras turn out small valves as parasitic. at base field in. Here also in turn is vertical valves? Strept. nevis retincta, 5 ft several specimens of streptolhoma at various levels.

76 J. & Cornelison and Son. Bybectown, Ky. = Portland. Clay is obtained on road from Waco to Cobb Ferry, about 1/2 m'l E of junction of Waco- Cobb Ferry road with pike thru Waco to Divine. Thickness in an average 6 or about 5 ft. The clay rests the Black Shale. Clay is brought to slimp and glazed as jugged, using one horse and tub. Taken from jug to cellar; Jars 1qt 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 gal. jugs 1qt 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 gal. Churns 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, & gallons. Blaze with slip clay get from New York, delivered to crime from Florida mixed with red lead and man garase. They is all stirred together the clay being strained first + then the pottery is dipped + dried, and then vt's to the Kiler. Used as down draft kiln, fuel: coal, heat up slowly for about 24 hours; and raise to white heat in 24. Leavers great hole, + use a try piece, where the clay is good on this try piece and it clues. Curl 50 hours, Tilings, 4, 6, & inch. 77 D. Zittel + S m. East end of Waco, Set clay in George McMinnys place, about 2 mi. SE. + 6 ft if clay overlying the Black Shale. In same place 4-7 ft clay is found on sand, in there cases the clay is counseled with them their resting on Black Slate. Used largely for storing corn + stuffin' jars, Milk pans 1/2, 1, 2 gallons

Not measured; Thin limant mes and clay. 1 ft fern E. overlaid 3 ft. clay. 6 in clay, muleady, & no farming in mo., 3 in clay, overlaid 1 ft topsoil = mykthide and Brady's Ridge. clay. 276 At Whites station dark clay s.l. Platystraphia lynx at track level immediate south of statin. Dip 2 ft in 100 ft to north. Filled by shale. Then by more dark the clay divided with Platystrophia lynx. The Wp of last named arch is some 25 ft above Whites station, Thin brown shales, 45 ft to base of Clinton. Clinton here according to this is stratigra-phi cally 45 ft above Beds carrying Platystrophia lynx, Clinton. 2ft 2in Massive led at face 7ft Clinton heavy thin lime layers interbedded with clay 4 ft 1/8 in, chiefly clay but with rather ammeous clay eg. rock layer - 5 ft clay bed further NE near Panlato, large crinoid trades of Plat- istrella about 1 ft below base of the 5 ft clay layers. The clay layer is getting some calcareous towards SW, 7ft limestone, but interbedded with considerably clay, 21/2 ft li assigned to Clinton Topmost layer believed to contain Shuck endinum specimens per n, 2 in. Layer with pink ochr Earthy bed at face of black shale the 51 This 15 in. of limestone lie north the Fish tooth layer can tain much calcite in some place, in great latches. The way be rich at lower part of Dernnian below fish layer at Elliston road work 275. RR crossing over cracks. Dipping slight here. 11 ft Clinton to base of clay bed, 18 ft to top of limestone layers rather frequent. 10 ft Bedford clay, So it is interpolated from Paula section, in the be- lief that the strong south- ward dip is about here. At any rate the dip at the Dernnian exposure 43 mi. 5 275 is small, 2ft. My be massive bed in Gasper See Osmine section to Weather sandy form. 2ft 4in' Fine fish plate at base of this layer, same as at Ludion Fields. K. Also Black nodules.

1000 Berea 7 AM. 87. J.C. Baker's farm, 3 mis of Ringtn, 970 ft. 8 AM. 5 mils of house. No exposures at me here. Siltfieldella bed. No fossils. 3'2" top of heavy layer at top of 7'ft massive Clinton limes. Fault with Dermin on N on same level as Clint, on S. North of J.C. Baker house. Strong plant toward SW, Section not well expressed. 6'2" gray Derminian l. 1'ft limestone, weathering chalky, fish layer, then, at top, At least wit very small inodular material. 88. 1/2 mi. NE of New Liberty church colored and 1/2 mil S of Robtann store, There is a layered section of soil overlying the Black Slate west of the road corners which is probably the equivalent to the clay at Jane's Grove section, must be at this layer only. Derminian at junction of roads and also 1/2 mi. W. reduced to about 1/2 inch sandy layer equivalent to fish layers, 90 89. N. of Dave Garrett's house at N. end of Bobtann. Der. limestone at least 4 feet thick, me sees as five layers. Total not less now. Exposure poor. Fault here. Ordovician on same level or north as Dermin limestone on south of fault. I made a mistake here. In the well at Joe Creek Kump's downse the Black Slate rests or nearly directly in the Oford beds that over intercedeiate layers of Derminian were found. Probably this is only a little fish layer here and the rock at Dave Garrett's is Clinton on, 1020 ft at 9.45 AM. The distance from base of Clinton at Dave Garrett's to base of Black Slate at Joe Creek Kump's is 16'ft. There may be a contact cut right here. They weren't 13'ft below Black Slate in well without reaching massive Clinton. at Mat Morris property, honeers is Der. l. under Black Slate & in shale. Oxford clay below + Black Slate about. Farther SE than Der. l. is 14 mi. thick at crossing wn stream.

Berea College brickyard. (63) G.I and Automatic, Brick maker made by Jonathan Creager Sons Cr. Cincinnati, O. Standard of models, made by the Willington ma- chine Cr. Wellington, Ohio. 601. Strip spoil about 3 inches. Clay used: 3 ½-4 ft. use a track car and cars haul clay from pit to incline by line, 5 up, incline by steam, using cable, at top of incline day is dumped from car on to plat- form & shovelled into disinte- grate consisting two large steel rolls between clay passes, and any pebbles are ground to small size. Water is added to clay as it reaches the rolls in disintegrator. Clay drops from disintegrator great a into pug mill made in Cincinnati (here revolving blades mix the clay and if necessary more water is added. The blades push the clay for- ward into the brick mull, The blade in brick mill press the clay down into the arms.

Many could be recognized if Davi's crals were taken into the field. Apparently the upper 1/2 foot of section just described which may equal 3 feet when fully exposed equals the brecciated layer. Base of section not seen yet. 11/3 At Mr. Howard's lander, About 1 mi E of Bill Mankes small spirifels are seen on surface of grey Lynn layers. Being siderolite both for identification. About 3 feet of Pennv'an exposed. Brady Myoda from 0-4 ft above bed. Not critical. [77] Markings cloud seem very critical all are abundant immediately above the bre- ciated layer. 114 E of Crab Orchard, a road across Dicks river. NE from Bill Mankes, 3/4 mile. Black slate. 11 ft Derv L in Layer 1-2 ft thick. Crals at top. Not critical. Concentric. Blotrophyphy lons. 4 1/2 ft. Der. L. at tip one large spirifus + crals. Berry barks. Not critical. Large styfra reticularis. 33 ft Beyond clay, Hastiliforms, gangers are massive 2 foot bed not seen. 248. Immediately N of RR W of Crab Orchard, sand layer but amount part equivalent to free- 11/2 ft Derv L. crals at top upper 5/8 ft Farnites + dark grey spir.d. 3 1/4 white oil, eroded at whe weathered. Rather E a more directly vertical section measures 18 ft.
