Clay rock (Richmond) bedded, Black Shale, 2 1/2 ft massive, = disassociated rock; 1 ft 2 in. in 3-4 in. layers, solid 1/2 ft 4 in sandy gray rock weathering 2 ft massive with crinoid stem 6 in nodular layers. 1/2 ft gray massive rock. Dermium 15 1/2 ft. 20 ft clay? 13 ft limest + clay; 5 1/4 clay 7-1/2 limestone, rem [illegible] 73 Lexington Tile Roof Co. Maco Shingle Tile, Thronton & Ross, McCullan Ho. 5 ft of clay overlies the Black shale at the shingle tile work; 6 in. I am not verifying this is stripped away. Clay dug, soak it, leave overnight for drain tile, brick, shingles. Next day clay is shovelled into the disintegrators. Then cray at me present if clay is crushed, fragments crushed down to 7/6 inch. Carried by belt from disintegrator to to the tile wheel. The clay is pushed out of the tile wheel through the chutes where the profile thickness and weight is given to bricks, shingles, &c. The clay pushed at to corners to cut off tails, where these objects are cut off to perfect lengths. Clay for shingle + anything I & dressed, is shaped up at least 2 days, cooked to oil cloth, to get evenly moist = winter temper. Can be kept all winter. Then it is pressed. Shingles, &c.
