Capacity 4000 shingles in a day, 16 hours, for 1 small Let dry by air from 2 to 5 days depending on weather. They all shoved in the pallets. When dry they are sheathed (=trim) off along edges and corners) and stacked up. Taken to kiln, shingles set up in edges, 8 in. gap, and fire bricks bricks between. Fire day secured near the works. Burned 72 hours. Let not fresh smoke at top holes. This takes (39) almost 24 hours, no great heat used, Then have heat gradually to a white heat, which takes about 48 hours square, then clean down the heat just firing & close up the fire doors. Takes 3 days to cool, 1½ to empty, 1½ to fill. 3 men will fill the kiln or so to make 50 sq.square a day = 250 shingles to 1/2 square = 10ft x 10 feet surface of roof. 2 men at dismantling no. at mill = 1 cut of 1 man 2 off barriers, that wheel 4 dry the shingles. Burn off 25 dry blanks in a good stack, in this will only 15 sq.ft. stack in Bunk, back close. 1 man at leveling press. 1 feeder. 1 dumper 1 off barriers, to pass & away 1 skipper & trimmer. 2 off barriers to fill the kiln guid 1 to set it & stack up. 2 men to fire. 1 day on an 1 night man. $1.00 per day, except kiln heater who gets $1.50 perday because an expert.
