Dalquest 3540 " " 3541 " " col. by W.W. Dalquest The above eight skinks and four alligator lizards were collected by Garth Murphy, Walt Dalquest, and I, collected in 1 1/2 hours. All were cold and inactive, and under rocks. No. 3540 was taken about 500 feet higher up on the hill. The ground was much drier under the rocks up there than on the hillside where the rest were taken. On this trip and on the one to the same place on Dec. 17, I rolled over 1000 more rocks in the under bay trees & found no skinks, no other reptiles, and but several Batrachians and an Aniedes. Just out beyond the limits of the tree, where there is enough light for grass to grow, more skinks have been found than in any other part I this area. Three of the Gerrhonotus were found under Eucalyptus logs & one was found under a rock under Eucalyptus tree.

All were found under rocks that could not have been turned over by hand (without a pick). Most of the time was spent digging into rock piles or a bank under a bay tree. Two of the skinks were found at the top of the bank just out from under the foliage of the trees. One Ensatina, 1 Ictinus, 1 Breeder, and 2 Batrachoseps were all the vertebrates found under the rocks under the tree. The weather was clear and cool - a beautiful and pleasant day. Mrs. Vert. NE Lake Sonoccal hitched a ride thru the tunnel to ¼ mi. w Orinda Junction. From there I followed a ridge that meets Grizzly Peak Ridge at Bald Peak. Collected 3 hae (by myself) & got 17 skinks. All were near the surface, under small rocks. Weather- a total of cool, cloudy, sun shone thru several times, for about one hour.

J. Rodgers - 1943 247A Mrs. Vert Zool, Univ. Cal., Berkeley, Cal. April 20, 1943 Rec 7031 (cont) Puerto Canyon, 250 ft, 5 mi. W. Patterson Stanislaus Co., Cal. April 12, 1943 in the U.S. Navy and on a 30 day leave. At this point, the "canyon" is a wide valley, with a stream meandering through it. The country is grass- covered, with no trees for within 1/2 mile, except the cottonwoods that line the stream. The skinks were found under rocks along a gully that had a trickle of water running down it. The gully is only 4 - 8 feet deep in the part where we collected. We stopped at a place 1 mi. S. from handing to turn over some boards around an old pump house, and Cook saw a pink tailed skink, but was unable to catch it. April 12, 1943 Here we walked up over and around the north end of a little butte, about 3/4 mi. S. of Orestimba Creek. We had entered a ranch and gained permission to drive to it on a private road. The butte is on the northwest facing slope of grassy hills, and the nearest trees are sycamores along the creek. The small gopher snake collected had just swallowed something. April 12, 1943 3722 Coluber constrictor mormon - found by Cook at under a board in a vacant lot just west side of highway in town. We camped the night of April 12 along an irriga- tion ditch about 1/2 mile west of the Firebaugh- Mercedta road. While there we saw many bull- frogs, a shrike nest containing young, and Cook saw a weasel. After leaving Newman (somewhere in the region of Gustine or south of there) the country came to look drier and below Los Banos it was very dry and did not support arid growth of grass as it did at Newman. South of Los Banos, the ground appears to be

We asked a farmer about lizards and he and his boy directed us to a place several miles away along a creek where they had seen lizards - probably only fence lizards. At White's Bridge, about 2 1/2 miles SE of Mendota, we met a Mr. J. C. Stratton, who was working on some boats along the east bank of the Kings River. He showed him our samples of different kinds of skinks and asked if he had seen any like them. He said he had seen lizards like our sample of cancellose and long green ones running through the grass in the farm land "upon the plateau". He said he saw them especially when they were driven out by irrigation. We followed his directions, east on the road toward Fresno and noticed that we soon rose onto land that was 15 or 20 feet higher than that we had just left; and as we went north on Lake Ave., we found richer farm land. 9 mi. She seemed to know the different kinds of lizards, and said that skins were common north of the river. She thought that the country near around there flooded too often. We went back down half way and continued south toward Tranquility and San Joaquin. This took us back to lower country and we didn't get back to the loamy farm land until we had passed Burrel. In the region of Burrel we found ourselves in Valley Oaks county that was more or less continuous to Dinuba. King River, 24 mi. S Fresno Fresno Co., Calif. April 14, 1943 Last night we stopped in Dimba to see Olsocker, school teacher and collector of many specimens of skinks in that region. She is a former U.C. student. She directed us here, where we spent the night. The blue oak hills here are covered with rocks practically none of which can be moved. Oremile east Minkler we found an isolated hill and climbed it, turning over rocks. The soil was red, heavy, hard and cracked; most rocks deeply embedded.

Lighter parts of the pattern vary from Primuline Yellow (Pl XVI, 19,'a) to Old Gold (Pl XVI, 19,'i), on the lighter ones and Colonial Buff (Pl XXX, 21'',b) to Olive-Buff (Pl XL, 21''',b) on the darker ones. Two or three of the medium-light ones have a greenish or olive tinge. The thighs are mustard yellow - (Pl XVI, 19',b) on lighter ones and Straw Yellow (Pl XVI, 21'',a) on darker ones. J. Roagers - 1943 57 Eumeces skiltonianus Feb. 2, 1943 1-1/4 mi SE Bald Peak, Contra Costa Co., Calif. All 17 skins found by me in 3 hours collecting this morning were cold and very slow in action. By now I consider the following facts well established: 1) Better than 90% of the skinks found in these hills have been found under rocks or among rocks under ground. 2) Skinks are seldom, if ever, found under rocks that lie on rocks, leaving interconnecting space. In other words, the skinks don't stay near the surface if they can go deeper down. Most of the skins have been found under isolated rocks; rocks that have fallen free of the general outcrop and have been lying in the same spot for several years. Many skinks have been found under rocks that are 1-3" thick and roughly 4"-14" in diameter (not necessarily round or of equal horizontal dimensions - many are long & narrow). 3) The skinks apparently dig their way under such rocks and hollow out a cavity large enough to coil up in, though they make partial use of burrows of Stenopelmatus and crickets. 4) Skinks are found most commonly where the soil is light, which may simply mean that in places where the soil is heavy, they must seek natural holes or cracks or burrows of other animals. 5) Skinks are not confined to rocky places, but are more easily found there. About 1/2 mile SE of Bald Peak

Rockgea - 1943 58 Eumeces skiltonianus Feb. 3, 1943 Continuation of notes written in the lab after collecting 17 skinks on the way walking from Grinda Junction to Bala Peak (1-1/2 mi SE Bala Peak) on the highest part of the ridge (opposite a big mail from Bala Peak and about 200 yards NW of the big eucalyptus grove) the top of the hill is almost without rocks, and is covered with grass and thistles (+ other weeds). Last summer we walked thru this small area several times on the way to rocky country to collect skinks and saw more skinks running through the grass there than in any other place of similar size. Walt Dalquist claimed he saw six there one day and swore that if he had my pistol he could have collected a dozen there in an hour. That was doubt an exaggeration, but at least six skinks were seen there in four or five trips thru the area anyway. Also, we felt reasonably sure of having heard others. To-day when I came thru the area I noticed that it is just thick with Microtus workings. Microtus burrows are so thick that the whole area feels soft and cushiony as one walks across it. It's possible that Microtus furnish the required retreats for skinks. It's also possible that other animals attracted to the burrows serves as food for skinks.

J. Rodgers -1943 Eumeces shiltonianus Feb. 19, 1943 '1/4 mi. E Bald Peak, Contra Costa Co., Calif. We (Walt Dalquest and) collected today in a place where we had not collected since last April day 1944. Walt found 6 skinks, none under rocks that had been turned over before. I found 7, and two were under rocks that had been turned over before; they were both in little hollows they had made under the rock and there was evidence that they had dug under from the edge of the rock. Three others of mine were also in hollows under rocks and two were very active; one ran from under a rock when I turned it and the other was running along thru the short green grass when I first saw it. I may have scared it out from under a rock without noticing it. I saw the bright blue tail of another disappear down an old burrow as I turned over a rock, but could not get it. The grass under the tightest (flattest closest to the ground) rocks that were turned over last year has completely dried out and is pretty thoroughly decayed. Since the skinks have to dig the surface layer of ground to get under rocks it seems safe to assume that it is necessary for the grass to nearly completely decay before the rock is useful to the skink as a shelter again after it has been overturned onto grass-covered ground. Generally speaking then, they can begin to use the rocks after 10 to 12 months from the time they were overturned,

Is-day Sherburne Cook brought in 31 skinks that he says he collected Feb. 27 & 28, along the east ridge of Wild Cat Canyon, northeast of the Golden Park Golf Course. J. Rodgers -1945 (no notes on this form in 1944) Eumeces skiltonianus April 5, 1945 On April 1, Walt Dalquest collected 2 skinks, 3 mi:s Angwin, Napa Co. and brought them in to MV2 alive. On, a full grown female had a tail that consisted of about 25 mm. of the original part and about 40mm of a sharply tapered regenerated tail. The dorsal surface of the regenerated part was bright blue- nearly as bright as the blue of a young specimen (the other one of the 2 was young). The blue also extends up onto the original stub for about 10 mm but only as a broken mottling.

Only about half of tail leftd "3 of that broken off when the specimen arrived to-day, alive. Ventral surface of tail pink; mottling of grayish blue dorsally, thus blue- grey toward base. A few specks of gray on ventral surface. Dorsolateral lines tan.

J. Rodgers - 1943 Eumeces gilberti rubricaudatus Mar. 25, 1943 Mrs. Vert. Zoöl., Univ. Calif., Berkeley, Calif. Description of 19 specimens of acc.no. 7017, collected on Mar. 20, 1943 west slope of Smith Mountain, 500-800 feet, by Alice Kerr and sent in to MVZ alive. They have received my catalogue numbers 3636-3644 (females) and 3645-3654 (males). The pattern on the back of these specimens is definitely like rubricaudatus, but variable, some having a pattern more like that of gilberti or placeaia. In this respect, this population does not differ from cancellosus. None of these 19 specimens has even nearly lost its color pattern. Only one of these specimens has any blue on the tail; no. 3640, has had the distal half of its tail broken off, and about 5/8" inch has been regenerated; this part, or only this part, is blue. 3636 has a complete long tail that is bright orange to ventrally. On the distal half the orange extends to the dorsal surface, where it shows thru the grayish tan dorsal color. 3737 has a tail that is about 5/8 of the original + a 7/8" reg. tip. It is shell pink ventrally; the pink is confined to the median wide row of scales and the inner half of the next row out. Dorsally, the tail is the same as the general body ground color. Specimens mentioned by numbers so far are females, the following are males. 3647 has a bright orange tail, ventrally. The orange extends dorsally where it shows thru the brownish dorsal ground color of the original color and is bright and clear on th

J. Roagan - 1943 2. Ennebus gilberti rubricaudatus Mar. 25, 1943 Mrs. Vert. Pool, Univ. Calif., Berkeley, Calif. regenerated tip. This is the smallest specimen, but is probably past the stage when the real pink juvinal tail color of rubricaudatus is evident. 3646 has the same orange but lighter. 3645 has light orange on regenerated part only; the rest of the tail has no pink or orange. 3650 has the same situation, but tail generally lighter and orange bright. 3648 has orange labials (the only one with orange labials - none have pink). The under side of the head back to the throat is light on the pink. The ventral surface of the tail is shell pink; the pink covers the ventral 3 rows of scales, and extends up into the brownish dorsal surface. Just the small regenerated tip of 3651 is light pink ventrally. Reg. tips of 3653 and 3654 are not pink. The regenerated tips of females, no 3639 and 3641 have a faint tinge of blue, those of 3643 and 3644 are white ventrally, as are 3653 & 3651/80.

J Rodgers -1943 Charina bottae July 13, 1943 Mrs. Vert. Zool., Univ. Calif., Berkeley, Caly. On April 10, S.F. Cook, Jr. brought in a rubber boa, taken in Berkeley. Two others were taken by him (on Grizzly Peak Blvd.) and one by A.H. Miller (Strawberry Canyon) in past 3 weeks. At least two other reporters in Berkeley or Oakland this spring— They seem to be extra numerous here this year.

J. Rodgers - 1943 Thamnophis ordinoides atrotus April 18, 1943 Mrs. Vert Zool., Univ. Calg., Berkeley, Alameda Calf. note on garter snake (T.R. 3812) taken April 15, 1943, at Romers Creek, 450 ft., 5 mi. N Parkers Bar, Merced Co., Calg. The snake was kept alive in a 1 gallon mayonnaise jar with two large yellow-legged frogs (Rana boylii boylii). During the night of April 17, one of the frogs disappeared and a large bulge was noted in the snake. The snake was chloroformed and thoroughly injected with 75% alcohol (especially the bulge).

J. Rodgers - 1943 2 Lampropeltis getulus boglii April 18, 1943 Mrs. Vert. Zool., Univ. Calif., Berkeley, Alameda Co., Cal. Noted on king snake (T.R. 3835) taken 1 mi. n.w.w San Felice, 275 ft., Santa Clara Co., Calif. This snake was placed in a jar (1 gal. mayonnaise) with some skinks (Eumeces skiltonianus) and some fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis) when they were collected, about 5:00 p.m. The jar was about half full of dry and green grass. At about 6:00, when we were parked in a service station in Gilroy, we found that this snake had started to swallow a large Sceloporus. When we first noted it, only the head and shoulders were in the snake's mouth; 20 min. later, the tail had disappeared. July 13, 1943 Mrs. Vert. Zool., Univ. Calif., Berkeley, Alameda Co., Cal. While in Santa Cruz last week, my father told me that Theodore J. Hoover collected a large king snake (Lampropeltis g. boglii) and transported it alive from San Simeon to his home on Waddell Creek, where he released it. Yesterday a king snake started to eat a garter snake (T. sirtalis) while both in a 1 gal. mayonnaise jar. The two specimens belong to acc. no. 7079. The head x about 3/4" of the neck of the garter snake was in the king snake, released when chloroform
