Madera Co., Caly. Acc. 7031 (cont.)
April 15, 1943
This farm is on the second terrace back from the
Fresno River, and about 30 feet above the river level.
The soil is light and with a fairly rich growth of
grass that is especially tall and rich among
board and track heaps. From shinks were found
under boards and debris, another, young with
bright pink tail escaped.

As we left Madera, going up the valley on the
main highway, we traveled through some dry
country that did not support much tall grass
but, as soon as we turned west on the road to
Los Banos, and until a few miles west of the San
Joaquin River, we were traveling through high
farming land of deep light soil. We stopped at the
places and found boards to turn over, but found no
shinks. The soil was light, the grass green and rich,
and conditions generally looked favorable for snakes.
