in the U.S. Navy and on a 30 day leave. At this point,
the "canyon" is a wide valley, with a stream
meandering through it. The country is grass-
covered, with no trees for within 1/2 mile, except
the cottonwoods that line the stream. The
skinks were found under rocks along a
gully that had a trickle of water running
down it. The gully is only 4 - 8 feet deep in
the part where we collected.
We stopped at a place 1 mi. S. from handing
to turn over some boards around an old pump
house, and Cook saw a pink tailed skink, but
was unable to catch it. The ground was
light and loamy here and the growth of
grass was rich and green.
