April 12, 1943 3722 Coluber constrictor mormon - found by Cook at under a board in a vacant lot just west side of highway in town. We camped the night of April 12 along an irriga- tion ditch about 1/2 mile west of the Firebaugh- Mercedta road. While there we saw many bull- frogs, a shrike nest containing young, and Cook saw a weasel. After leaving Newman (somewhere in the region of Gustine or south of there) the country came to look drier and below Los Banos it was very dry and did not support arid growth of grass as it did at Newman.
