Remsen, J.V. 1978 Yellow-billed Loon Gavia adamsii Feb.12 Monterey Bay boat trip, Monterey Co., Calif.: I seen within 1 mile of shore between Hopkins Marine Station and Lovers Point. I was going over loon identification with a beginner when the bird appeared conveniently next to a Common Loon just studied. It was the basic size and shape of a Common Loon but seemed larger, longer-billed, and thicker-necked. The bill was distinctly yellow, not pale grayish as in pale-billed Commons; the distal 1/4 of the upper mandible seemed particularly yellow; the culmen was clearly seen to be pale for at least the distal 1/2 (S.F. Bailey from the bridge was able to see that it was pale for its entire length); the rest of the bill was dull yellowish except for some dusky on the sides of the basal 1/3 of the upper mandible; the upper mandible was very straight except for a slight droop at the tip; there was a noticeable gap between the two mandibles when viewed from the side. The rest of the plumage did not appear to differ noticeably from Common Loon (perhaps closer study without pouring rain and wind would have yielded further differences), except that there was a dark smudge in the quiccular area which contrasted with a paler brown facial area. The bill was also held at a slightly upward angle. When flushed, the bird seemed very ponderous - very slow, labored wingbeats and large body. It dove and came up hundreds of yards from the original spot, repeated this 2-3 times, and finally eluded us completely; it was able to stay underwater for very long intervals. The bird was studied from as close as 40 yards (but more often 50-100 yds) for at least 3-4 minutes

Remsen, J.V. 1978 White-rumped Sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis Monterey area [cont] June 3 off a white eyebrow. The face was a pale grayish with the palest area in the lower cheek area. The breast brownish gray was strongly striped, little a Pectoral Sandpiper except that the background color between the stripes was white, not buff. The breast stripes ended abruptly and the remainder of the underparts where white, except for disintegrating stripes and spots along the sides to the upper flanks. The back was striped dark brown with some buffiness between stripes. The wings were brownish with many of the coverts dark-centered and pale-edged; the folded primaries appeared a solid dark brownish. In flight, the rump/uppertail covert area was white and the tail was dark. That the rump was completely white was clearly seen twice in flight and also once when preening the rump area. The white rump eliminates any other small shorebird except 3 species which have longer legs and bills and are larger in body size (plus many other major and minor differences): Curlew Sandpiper, Wilson's Phalarope, Stilt Sandpiper. The only species remotely similar in shape, Curlew Sandpiper, lacks conspicuous breast streaks and has a decurved bill. The call note of the Curlew Sandpiper is not unlike other Calidris whereas the distinctive call of the White-rumped is unique among shorebirds - I'm familiar with both. The Carmel bird gave a call totally unlike that given by any shorebird I've ever heard - a very high-pitched squeal similar to call note of Costa's Hummingbird.

Remsen, J.V. 1978 Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus Feb.25 Arcata, Humboldt Co., Calif.: 1 ad. at Mad River Slough bridge in the Arcata Bottoms. This bird has been present for a week, but had been identified previously as a Franklin's Gull. Mike and John Parmeter found the bird last weekend and although they had identified it as a Franklin's at the time, they realized that evening that it was not a Franklin's after consulting literature. However several other people subsequently looked at the bird and had concluded it was a Franklin's. When we arrived at the spot, Jon Dunn took one look at the bird sitting on the mud several hundred yards away in miserable, glare-plagued light and instantly called it a Black-headed Gull. Lacking Jon's recent extensive experience with this species in Europe (and Jon's field I.D. skills), I couldn't say it was a Black-headed for sure, but offered to swim across Mad River Slough if the bird was a Franklin's (or any other N. American gull). It was sitting on the mud with 3 Ring-billed Gulls and 3 Mew Gulls. It seemed to be smaller than a Ring-billed but larger than a Mew. The mantle color was virtually identical to that of the Ring-billed Gulls (pale gray), and definitely darker than the Mew Gulls; and so it could not be a Franklin's Gull, which has a very dark gray mantle, and should appear smaller than Mew. While Jon went to find the other carloads of birders in the area, I stayed and studied the bird in much better light and at a closer distance (~200 yds) through the scope as it was swimming on the water. The shape of the bird

Remsen, J.V. 1978 White-eyed Vireo Vireo griseus May 19 Point Reyes, Marin Co., Calif.: I seen in the exact same row of trees at Mendoza Ranch as the bird last year in early June. It had been found yesterday by the Ghiorso's (Al + Wilma), but because Don Roberson thought their description wasn't good [iris dark, body size too large but they saw yellow spectacles, 2 white wing bars, throat white yellowish breast and flanks, white center to belly, etc.], the bird was "poo-poos'd". When we found out about it this afternoon after someone else saw the bird again today and saw that the iris was white, we rushed out to try to find it. Once we located it, we saw it off and on for a half-hour or so with lengthy observations of the underparts of the bird but poor looks at the upperparts, reminiscent of last year's bird. The most conspicuous mark on the bird was the bright green-yellow "spectacle" - a bar extending across the forehead to the loral area on either side. There appeared to be a thin pale eye-ring but it was hard to see, especially since the iris was also pale [strikingly so in bright light on outer edge of trees, hard to see inside the dark canopy [dark pupil enlarges ??]]. The rest of the face was pale grayish. The throat was grayish-white, contrasting strongly with the yellowish wash across the breast and bright yellow sides and flanks. The center of the lower breast through the belly to at least as far back as between the legs was whitish. The bill was moderately large for the body size and was definitely hooked and all blackish. We saw little of the upperparts except that there were 2 strong

Remsen, J.V. 1978 Worm-eating Warbler Helmitheros vermivorus July 17 Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif.: I seen in dense willow-dogwood thickets about 200 yds. s. of Jewel Lake opposite Nature Center where found on July 11 by Phil Gordon. Today, Linda Hale saw it at about 1030 about 20-30 yds into the thicket from the road at a spot where it had been seen most often the last three days; she came out to get me, and meanwhile Nancy Conzett, after being there for only 5 minutes, had the bird at close range in the same area at ~1045. Then we went back into the thickets and at about 1115, I heard a warbler chip note, about 20 yds. N. of the spot where Linda had seen it, which sounded like a weak or soft Yellow Warbler note, and glimpsed the bird low in the undergrowth. After 10 minutes or so, the Worm-eating Warbler came into view, and we watched it intermittently for about 20 seconds at about 30 ft.' Then we lost it, but it re-appeared a few minutes later, higher in the foliage, and we saw it again for about 10 seconds in fairly bright light. This warbler was very long-billed and short-tailed relative to other warblers. The wings and back were a dull brown without streaks or wingbars. The head was conspicuously marked - a blackish streak through eye and along side of crown - thus the center of the crown had a broad, pale streak bordered on either side by a well-defined blackish streak. The underparts appeared to be a pale buffy, looking almost dull golden yellow when in the sunny foliage.

Remsen, J.V. 1978 Great-tailed Grackle Cassidix mexicanus June 18 Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, San Francisco Co., Calif.: 1 ♂ on the island in the north end of the lagoon and adjacent "mainland" shoreline where it had been found earlier in the day for the first record for northern California. The bird spent most of the time hidden from view in the foliage of the trees on the island, occasionally giving loud whistled notes which sounded similar to those given by this species at Imperial Dam, Furnace Creek Ranch, Ramer Lake etc. - an explosive, rising whistle, sometimes followed by a similar, higher-pitched whistle. Twice I heard it give a burst of 4 quick, inflected, rising whistles. I have never heard Common Grackle give these calls, and I grew up with the bird in Colorado. We watched the bird perched in the open at about 100 feet for 5-10 minutes. Most of the upperparts and underparts were an iridescent blackish with blue tones around the head; the wingcoverts were dark brown and looked The primaries looked dull blackish. worn. The iris was gleaming white. The tail was long and vaulted in flight. The bill was long, blackish, slightly decurved, and hooked; it seemed longer and thinner proportionally than Common Grackle. The body size was 2-3 x as long as a Brewer's Blackbird, much too large for Common Grackle. This bird lacked the bronzy-greenish and violet iridescence which is conspicuous on Common Grackle. Boat-tailed Grackle has a dark iris and would be highly unlikely to even occur in California.
