Mountain Chickadee
Parus gambeli
June 2 Point Reyes, Marin Co. Calif.: I at the Fish Docks where I had been since at least yesterday. This would be an extremely good record for Marin Co., at any time of year, but early June is particularly bizarre in that this should be the middle of the breeding season for Mtn Chickadee, not a period of movement. There was a Winter Wren at the same spot - also a rather northern sp. out of place at this time of year (presumably the Marin Co. breeding population is sedentary).
The bird was recognized by its husky, hoarse, "che-de-day" before it was seen. The underparts were all whitish with the throat backlish; the back and wings were gray; the crown was black as was a black postocular eyeline setting off a white eyebrow. On three occasions, the bird flew out away from the trees heading west, but each time returned to the trees after successively longer flights, the last at least 1/4 mile.
