Remsen, J.V. 1978 White-rumped Sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis June 3 Monterey area, Monterey Co., Calif.: I at the mouth of the Carmel River where found yesterday evening by Jeri Langham. We arrived at dawn and watched the bird feeding on the small mudflat for an hour and a half through scopes from 50 to 200 ft. In overall size and shape, the bird seemed identical to a Baird's Sandpiper: a large peep with noticeably long wings and a seemingly long body. This bird also seemed very fat when viewed head-on - almost turtle-like in shape: head-on view to show "squat" profile The above sketches were traced from sketches made while watching the bird through the scope.
