Feb.25 was not right for Franklin's - the head was too
[coit] small and pointed and the wings too long ;
the neck was too long and skinny - the whole
bird just looked too long and tapering for Franklin's-
which to me looks short-necked, round-headed, and
stocky.
The head was mostly blackish gray, especially on
the crown where it was darkest; the forehead and an
area below the eye were still whitish - breeding plumage
not yet complete. There was a white eye-ring, but I
couldn't tell if it was complete. The bill was
dark-tipped [illegible], basally dark orange-brown to reddish-
brown depending on the light.
When everyone arrived, the bird was flushed and
we were able to see the wing pattern from above and
below. It was difficult to ascertain the exact
pattern in the primaries in flight and so what follows
should not be interpreted as 100% accurate - we never
had what I consider a truly satisfactory study of
the primary pattern. The wing pattern description also
