Remsen, J.V. 1978 Blue Jay Cyanocitta cristata Feb.25 Arcata, Humboldt Co., Calif.: I was seen in the Fieldbrook area near Arcata where it has been present for weeks. We watched it for 10 minutes sitting in a tree and coming once to a backyard feeder. We saw it from as close as 50 feet in good sunlight. It was obviously a Jay, seemingly smaller than Stella's. It was crested, but much less obviously than Stella's. The crown was blue, as was the nape, back, wings, and tail; the deepest blue was in the primaries and the dingiest was on the back; the face was white with a black post-ocular line; a conspicuous black collar separated the head from the body; the underparts were a dingy whitish. The wings had conspicuous white areas (details of placement not noted) and the outer tail feathers were white as were the tips of the rest of the tail feathers. Both the wings and tail were conspicuously barred black. The bird was silent the entire time we were there, although it had given typical Blue Jay calls just prior to our arrival according to P. Lehman.
