Rays pubescent except upper part outside, style branches with line hairs outside. Reclene pubescent. Rays colored in-side, greenish outside. Calyx 5mm long tubular, the lobe not deep, v standing upright over young fr. Corolla glabrous, seem to have ridge at base. Anthers longer & more pointed than in Cynoglossum v 4-17-29 "Cynoglossum fuscatum" Agri Ex (see earlier). Calyx 3 mm, campanulate, deeply lobed the 5 rote lobes ciliate & spreading. Corolla covered with minute pimples which soon

become long processes. Scales at throat of corolla blue same shade as lobes, the stamens making the center white. Corolla 1/4-5/8 in diam. Tube 3 mm long, lobes brooker than in Anclusia. Lobes more or less dentifuculate or edged. Prof this is same as 4-6-29 from Garden Club. X 4-17-29 Impatiens Balsamuce L. p.194 v30M J.C.P. 473 Legi. Ex. Lateral sepals very long. Sometimes a 4th sepal larger than the 2 lateral ones but much smaller than the four bearing an or the standard which enclose flin bud each bear a cufulete. green tip 2.5-3 mm long. The 2 lateral petals deeply divided to top of clent. I do not understand

4-19-29 Linonrium sinnatum, Mill BMJ.C.P. 588 Agri Fx. "Statice sinnata" Mr. Nauen. Calyx lavender, cilled? corolla yellowish or Calyx lightyellow corolla deeper yellow. Inflated of long naked peduncles in a secondary racine of secondary spikes. The main secondary racine being bent so that flo stand upright, the peduncle of the spikes 3/4 1/2 at base finfl v gradually growing stater toward apex. Each pedicel subtended by 2 small brown scarious bracts long acuminate awned very ciliate (or finelyriate) as well as 2 or more much larger awl-shaped terete green bracts. Thisation of the spikes is 3-angled v at base of spikes where st turn out an angle ex- confiquately with stem. spands into 2, 3-lobed lobeX (or 3 bracts) the lateral lobes lanceolate-subulate, the middleone flanged or 3 angled. Flo in it is in a thick green bract thick, green v with subulate points on its broad back but hyaline ciliate on the broad clasping edges. Each fl. seen accompanied by this hyaline lanceolate awned bract with awn borne at its, bifid apex. The bract which encloses the 2 flo is subtended by an ovate scarious awned bract similar to those found a base of spike-stem. These bracts all long v difciliate. Noth lo seen. Calyx? pubescent

4-17-29 Lupinus Hartwegii, Lindl. Right Ex BMJC.P.408 In spite of remarks on h. pubescent this seem correct for reasons underlined. But calyx lobes not cap-long pointed. Fl is 3/4 in. from top of pedicel to tip and almost or quite as wide. Calyx has 2 main lobes, the upper gibbous (or swollen) at base v-notched at apex, the lower entire, these both 1/2 in in the upper slightly less from base of pedicel to tip, separated to about 3/4in. base. Below the sinus on each side a subulate organ (are there only 2 lobed?) about 3/8 in long. The stamens alternately have long anthers v short anthers, 4 of the short antherd stamens being longer than the the 6 monodelphous. Style a little longer than longest stamen with little tuft of hairs around terminal capitate stigma, the longest hairs on inside giving somewhat oblique effect. Whole plant pubescent and hairy. gy with longer white hairs. 4-22-29 Fritillaria verschojlftii Var Plarcei, Nichols. B.M.J.C.P. 708. V Var argyrosema, Nichols. Fl. Woodhaven. Fl. bkt 3/16 x 7/16 obic- arus with minute tip. glaucous above but glandular pubescent, the glands being pinkish-brown sun- mite of long white hairs. Bracts opp making the 5 in spale four sided. Each bract at lends 1 sepcle of which as 2 linear lanceolate bracts (1 on each side) Corolla 1/4 in. Upper lip 1 linear lobe, the lower 3-lobed. The 2 stamens inserted shortly below the sinus and well above middle of tube" 4-22-29 Haganica regina. R.Bz. B.M.J.C.P. 778 Fl. Woodhaven. Text see S. splendua Hort B.F. 13 408. F-l head 2 1/2 in across. Receptacle shortly conic v zodeply pitted as to look almost sealey. Invol bracts united v cup-like, mainly 2 series, the inner pale & scarious margined, the next quite green outside these at various heights. Bracts that are green narrowly linear. Rays mutual almost 1 1/2 in long. Diels fls with tube saugled, stamens definitely thot not long failed or so gittate at base. "Pappus" not seen in vol of very young calyces. Lvs alt. Petiolos ciliate. Plant very milky juice. Pedicels with at least a few subulate bracts. 4-22-29 Amphabaldea linifolia, Meisel. B.M.J.C.P. 623. Racemes axillary & at leafy to top, and each if bearing a short raceme, but and some gittate.

racemes with low near base but no bituminous as in Oleosa v Cynoglossum. Plant appears glabrous & glaucous through them, but except for short white flat thick hairs on calyx lobes at base. Calyx lobes v lvs ciliate. Fl 1/2 in broad. 4-22-29 "Verbeno venosa" by Miss Wood Woodbarn "the same that has been wild" Mrs Allen Davis, 1/4 said the wild verbena had been cut into three gardens. V. venosa, Kil v Hook B.M.J.C.P. 639 evidently V. rigida. Spurge BFJ/B.8.11. Infr consists of 3 spikes with 2 outstanding bracts. Middle spikes sessile, lateral spikes on peduncles 1/4 in. Tube 1/6 in long. lent 3/6 in across. ? X 4-22-29 Chrysina miniata, Regel, B.M.J.C.P. 181 Fl. Woodbarn. Flo 10 in umbel. 3 arising from base of ovary. Fl soft glaucous, the segs inside a soft yellow in middle & whitish on edges. Stamens 6, unequal length, the longer coming to within 1/2-3/8 of top of broader seg. Style a little longer but not quite as long as segments (see 5-4-29) X 4-22-29 Euphorbia fulgens Torr p.219 B.M.J.C.P. 453 Fl. Woodbarn. Fl 3/6 in across. gland was in F. fulgens Peduncle very slightly below infl. Fl heads 3/4 in across. Bracts broader than long rounded with short very sharp point, not as yellowly scarlet as F. fulgens, Woodbaven. 4-22-29 Tropaeolum - A double form, Woodbaven. Many ob lanceolate petals about 3/4 in long x 1/6 in wide light yellow with scarlet stripe toward base, some petals conspicuously fringed at base of lobe. No reproductive parts (petals reduced to scales at center). Calyx torn if so could not see if spurred. 4-22-29 Bignonia rugosa-cati L. Doxantha - Relid, BMJ CP 686. Fl in collected Woodbaven. Stamens va staminode. 4-18-29 "Naegelia zebrina" Regel labeled Agri Fx. Ob but not studied. See B.M.J CP. 695. As pert to plant studied 3-20-27 and 3-10-29 which R. considered Dalboma-Trydcea, Bailey are B.F.y.B. 354 and S.E.W. 1786, also BMJ CP 693. Against theory its being Naegelia is fact that flo are in opp axillary clusts with peduncle 1/2 in from tip of which subtended by 2 bracts, arranges an almost umbellate clusts of 6-7 pedicelle 1/2-1/2 in long, the lvs reaching to tip of infl. Lvs purplish around edges lfs. below. Mr. Haus says definitely that this is Naegelia not Dalboma which is quite different.

Plants studied 3-21-29 & 2-10-29 both dists of 5 distinct glands not annular dist as Nagelia should have, 5-4-29 Fl. Agri. Dist. Under by redbark is blooms at Buenavista and both dist. of 5-glands, plains unto poplars. x 4-22-29 Fem with spores Woodburn (P.O.B. in pot.) In recess in quarry where Fittonia grew. Fronds divided, edge somewhat minutely many toothed entire. 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 in., linear lance- olate, undulate in middle, tapering acute at each end but longer [illegible] Primary veins many about 3/4 in apart at base to less than 1/8 in apart at tip. These veins parallel, forming L about 60 with rachis. Have effect of being free as they become densest at margin. Closer examination seems to show some caps toward base slightly forked at the very tip. But that veins a very obscure network oculus. Sori in 2 lines, 1 line on each side of primary vein. Lines in the main complete, two occasional places are simply, 5 lines are some- what irreg toward tips of blade. Sori circular, attached in center beneath, pale yellow turning golden. No sign of indusium [illegible]. Found on dry & leafy, glabrous, shining green above below. Mid. vein also conspicuous, lighter green. Sori not impressed as in the fern seen 3-11-29 Muss. Hays, Quincy Garden 4/4-11-29 Southlands. Sori 2mm diam rounded like little buttons Sporangia pedicelled. Not found in B.M.J.C.P.

4-22-29 Firm with apices. Woodbarn growing on very ground. St. very scaly. Blades 1/2 ft long, pinnate. Pinnae ovatolate, about 3/4 x 1/2 in the long acuminate tip curved upward or even curved so it points backward. Rounded inequilateral base almost sessile. Dark green shining above, lighter shining below, glabrous. Margins scarcely undulate-dentate. Veins anastomosing so as to make very definite lorgne effect beneath x [glabrous above, beneath looks glabrous to eye but (20x) is sparsely covered with fine, long, sleep y brownish hairs]. Sori abundant scattered, not more than 1/2 mm. the indusia circular, peltate. If in MJC.P this is Dry Cyrtomium faleatum, Puel p 71 4-22-29 Stiponopsis floribunda, Bmnj p 287. 4-20-29 Punica granatum l.p. 259 BM(C.P 533. Bud rose to Elba Beach. This is shrub commonly seen just putting out new reddish leaves on sq. twigs (thought at first to be Lagerstroemia indica see 4-10-29 entry) But petals scarlet not fringed or long clawed, ovary superior but adnate to calyx. 5 celled like pomegranate. Style not long. 4-17-29 Cuphea platycerca, low BM(C.P 538 flowered but not shed. leaves lanceolate to obov. lanceolate. pin long, sharply acuminate, narrowed to distinct petiole. Flo solitary. slender pedicelled calyx tube x in long slender, dark reddish spurred bright red but with darker ring around the white mouth. Petals none.

4-15-29 Panicum palmifolium, Fri Across at Agri Stat along ridge east of Rubber Tree. Labeled "Lindopogon celonsmithii = Lemm grass" but has no progenesis of pan. pan. not that. Sheathes overlapping, flattened, hairy enough to touch below. Open ligule? 1/8 hairs of blade long hairs on edges just above ligule. Blades to 33 in long 1/4 in wide, acute at apex, narrowing forward base so as to be no more than a margin to midrif. Mid. rif prominent on underside. Seeds are ribs many 20 or more, alternately dlong on upper & lower side so that it's very dry plicate. Blade glabrous both sides, long on margin. One plant with stiff culm from which inf was broken stood 5 ft. Plant in a large clump with general effect palm like. 5-6-29 Mayflower no flore. 4-23-29 "Elium plantagineum" L Mr. Lynch. Pomander State. Also but not studied. BMJ.C.P.626. Plant 2/2-3 ft, branched from about 6 in above base. hairs on lf not appressed, somewhat curving. Fils open pink & turn blue making general effect purple. Another plant has white fls. 4-23-29 "Lepatozyne maritima" by Mrs Hastings Pomander State BMJ.C.P.167. About 8 inches, yellow rays 8. Blade gray 1/2 in to leaf by 3/ 3/16 1/4 in wide. Lvs of bracts 2 blade. 7 spreading green ons, linear 1/2 in long. serrated rate, acute yellowish ones! "distinct. Young glandular on back, glandular on front but definitely not hairy in the wrinkled margins with 2 hairy arms that are at this stage 1.5 mm while alone is 3.5 mm. Ray alae glandular winged without hairs & deciduous scale subtends each of distal fl. receptacle otherwise naked. Pres. leptyne but does not agree with L. marchica or with the sp. in BMCP willard fl has only studied This Hastings 5-18-24 sayotiss infected by Gardeners from Arizona 4-23-29 Labiatas Tomander Bate. I only studied. Calyx 5mm long, 2-lipped, the lower of 4 acute lobes, the upper of 1 suborbicular, subcordate lobe, concave above, and its lateral edges projecting beyond tube, conspicuous in infl. Calyx glandular, puberulent outside, hairy inside. Nutlet smooth, broadly attached on req. 4 lobed disc which has tiny style as a core in centre. Calyx has stmg odor. Corolla white about 8mm, 2-lipped. Stamens 4 long exerted, together not hairy. 2 attached near top of tube stamens, areas them stalks 3mm long --> the lower projecting end hairy (a). the rest almost glandular. This resembles the long exsertive of Salvia but the cordate nutlet arms 2 celled tho not in appearance exactly like the anthers of the other 2 stamens which are attached at sinuses at base of one of the corolla lobes. Style slender, exerted, 2-clipt. Corolla glandular, makes a less puberulent without hairs within. Possibly nutlets will not be smooth.

Loss from crown near ground thick clustered roots showing above ground (Miss James says it lives mainly almost?) Lvs 12 in long x almost 6 in wide tapering to thick ends from about or little after middle. Petiole about 2 in long, not sheathing, 3 ridged on tabe. If is perhaps articulate with petiole of entire, undulate Mid-rib prominently ridged above beneath. Beneath toward base then 3 ridged. Primary veins similarly prominent Petiole 21/2 in axillary, brown. Spaethe brown 13/4 in ovate, acute, Spatha x equally long, completely covered with fle green. Almost? And leaves? Plants to 1' in this # growing to 6in high. Erect simple or branched at base into 2or 3 erect stems. Infl an elongating termal raceme, or often branching from axils of upper brs so there are 2 or occasionally more terminal racemes. Stridged vangular. hr whole'd in 4's-6's frequently in 7's & 8's, sometimes singly opp. at tops of strata to lanceolate 3/4-in long & 3/8-1/2 in wide, obtuse to rounded apex with mucronate tip, narrowed to cuneate sessile base, entire, margins often revolute, firm, almost coraceous as plant grows older, dark green or yellow-green, glabrous v glining. Leaves are rough to touch v'vry fine-grained leather, the ruglines (20x) seems to be caused by irreg aggregations of some subatance under the skin these lightie green or yellowish. Pedicels 1.5mm. wings 5-6mm Bract narrowly lanceolate, 2 mm long early deciduous (i.e. before fl fall) so that lower fl joint are bractless.) purple m edges, green zif down center. Besides this 2mm bract each fl has 2 tiny lateral pats bracts not 1/2mm long also de-ciduous but persisting longer than the other longer bract.

In sleep the petiole first rotates left and hair backs to upper side (pedicel? narrowest part 1/4 left below). Pod 3 1/2 in long x 1 1/8 x 7/8 wide, flat ribs, stripe dent (not fur). Seems surely this by desc. Vill. p394. But the numerous outside rows of fle vibrated bearing rays even as as well as those of L. juncifolium correct of filiform tubes with only a minute rudiment of blade of same colour as tube. The corolla only few perfect yellow dial fls have corolla 5 lobed. The hairy linear subulate bracts are purple striped at acuminate tips. 4-29-29 Nepeta Mussini, Spreng BMGP. p643. Fls Miss Hunters called by her "Nepeta". Largest fls from spec collected 3 1/4 x 7 fin. Calyx globose inside very definitely is nerved, lobes acute but not very sharply so. Lvs opp as far as could observe exstipulate, St. oblong purplish. Lf scale. Long 3/4x1/2 in, abruptly valvately acum, minute, subcordate at base. Nerves both sides but minutely ciliate. Stamens 4 inserted shortly below throat but forming 4 pubescent lines on tube to its base. Thin almost raceme clusters at axil near ½ from old wood. Only 2 fls col- lected all the tree bears frs. especially finely pubescent. Pedicels ½ in or less, Fl ¼ in high, corollary structure: : Stipals slightly united at base, glabrous outside, finely pubescent inside not esp. ciliate except as this inside pubescence along the edges; disk lobed but not glandular; vary ½ in high ovate, oblong (ie not tapering to point at top) with 5-6 spreading stubby stigmas (no style). Ovary 5-celled with 2 (yoss sometimes more ovules in each cell. The correct idea: ovary seems 5-celled with cell not dividing, sometimes incompletely, so the few (usually 2), not numerous ovules, seem attached in center of ovary and should have been considered them attached to file placenta, but [see B.M. J.C.P.] perhaps they are attached on inner edges of spiral placentae. No traces of stamens or staminodia. The 2 outer sepals intricated is 1 folded over the other, 3, the outside one folded on that. A M JC 13 114. St Davids (this is post date v place) 4 ft high with branches from very base which are 2 ft high to tops of br but not showing no fl Culm. After a while in date (on 5-6-29) root letures appearing at lowest nodes. Culm about geniculute. Sheaths smooth, loose v overlapping at least above. Ligule prominent % in high in middle rather less at edges clob, collar not prominent not at all awned or folded at corner. Blade v 14 x 1/2 in scabrous above v perhaps so beneath duff or partially exerted low general looks Arena. 2 other leaves smooth. % to % long acuminate. Rachis hairy on outside. Above glumes v tufted somewhat laxer below each lemma. Hairs not white.

Note how much less in B.M.G.C.P. applies to the 4-28-29 spec. In 4-12 in 3/8 min wide, ligule ½ in high. 2d decumbent at base, rooting (in water) at lower nodes. X 4-27-29 Triticum vulgare L p. 41 B.M.G.C.P. 116. Fl. 1 plant only at Norewell (not on list left with Mrs. Tee Van.) lemmas have midrib produced into blunt point not really an awn. 4-26-29 Panicum maximum, Jogg p.17. Fl. St. George. Common along road noticed esp. near swing bridge. Ligule ciliate with a tuft of white hairs at base & blade behind it.

"Columbella flabellata" [illegible] marginis 4-26-29 Polygonum littorale, Smith p. 28. St. George Common. 5-4-29 Tree at Agri Stat. in plots no. 9 offices distinguish the tree called Balsam of Peru at St. Marks but its are larger. No flower? Lvs abt. Peruvians 1/2 to 7 inches, the lateral ones of sp. Still x 2/3 in. Abruptly acute at apex, acute to of three at base, entire, undulate, glabrous, bright green shining above, lateral veins very distinct. Terminal lft & sin bud bristles more acute at base. Lat. lfts on thickened petioles 1/4 in long Terminal lft also has the same petiolets, jointed for clasping above the upper pair of lfts. Pet. thickened at base. Whirl lft fine pet 12 in long. St. light green. Could this be Toluifera Balsamum? l.p. 198. 5-7-29 Philadelphia Fl. B.V. Garden. P. coronarius is only once listed (B.M.) C.P. but this resembles P. Zeyheri Schrad. B.M./C.P. for 332 in that pedicels are glabrous (but flowers fragrant), style are fully the length of stamens, 4-5 divided 1/2 lengths also, terminated at tip. Young lvs just ap- pearing 1/4 x 7/8 in. with scattered hairs above, hairy on veins beneath with tufts of white hairs in axils of the 3 main veins, ciliate, rounded (though broad) rather than pointed at base. Calyx glabrous except inside.

Aoward lepo edged coriulant is finely wolly pubescent. X 4-29-29 Arvillea rotusta. Curr. p107 BMGC P 243. No fls fr. St. Geo. P.H. Lbs finely appressed pubescent beneath. X 4-29-29 Crinum asiaticum L. p 81 Fl only from table at Suez Plant Inn St. Geo. Drumth 0 1/4 fl. Scapes stalk some- what flattened 1 x 1/16 in. Pedicels stout also somewhat flattened 7/8 x 3/16 in. to 3in long. Plants tube 2in long, segments to 5 1/2 in long x 1/4 in wide. Buds opening later in loose bud seg. to 1 3/4 int 1/2 in (Lil shorter v broode) Fl white with mild red inside very faintly tinged pinkish green. Fl body wth withered when studied (except one petal from bud & where stamenous was pinkish.) This is possble C. asiaticum, L p 81, BMGC P 182. Tube straight. Note Crinum large white at Dry Cottage vst Duntlands vst Agri Ex was called "C. album" by Mr. Duncan & othrs. 4-28-29 Nottherodum fragrans, p108 p 70 Fl. St. Davids road to Ruttes Beach 4-29-29 Roadside opp. Seittal Pond. Cked. withered when studied. Seen also at Whitethall 4-29-29. Bulb in layers like onion, with many small bulbs around base. Lbs 10-20 in long, none wider than 3/4pin. Sepae 4 x 16in, hollow not ridged varugular (see unknown at Dunmylands 3-4-27 v2-27-29) Fls not more than 1/2 in wide.
