4-29-29 Clerodendron Thomsomae Balfour Fl. St. Georges Public Garden. What seems a vine only 2 ft or so high held against wall west of north steps by Kernilworth dry. Lvs opp as far as could observe exstipulate, St. oblong purplish. Lf scale. Long 3/4x1/2 in, abruptly valvately acum, minute, subcordate at base. Nerves both sides but minutely ciliate. Petiole 7/6 in, purple, veins impressed above, somewhat purplish beneath. & prominent to touch. St (only one collected) 3 veined at base. Fls in peduncled cyms (not noticed whether terminal or axillary) Pedicels 1/8-1/4 in enlarging at apex. Calyx white, 3/4 in high, deeply cut into 5 olate, sharply tipped lobes, salutate in bud and much larger (in bud) than corolla. Effect is like an inflated calyx from peduncle to fl. Corolla gamopetalous. Tube 7/6 in, slightly enlarged at base, greenish, gland pubescent, slender, limb rich red, 5 lobed, 1/2 in across. Stamens 4 inserted shortly below throat but forming 4 pubescent lines on tube to its base. Filaments threadlike, long exerted & after delisc ing coiled spirally, seem to be equal to extend when ex certed hit the 2 upper lobes fl corolla. Connective (but upper halves & antlier cells only) is round & seed like. Pollen lavender. Style filiform, long exerted. Stigma 3 lobed.
