Journail 136 1990 Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve, Smi No Lucia Montana Co. California Cstlew 25 Feb 1514 hours--left Albany at 1100 hrs. Drove '80 E to 980 hit quake construction detour, got onto 880 S to San Jose' took (75) to D.S. Had heavy traffic all the way. The reserve is located Smi south of Esalen Inst on highway 1 (3rd Bridge past Esda). Beautiful sunny day, light wispy cloud cover (30%) T = ~50°F windy is 3-5mph out of the NW). From Albany to Big Creek is 164.4 miles. Stopped for lunch in Carmel at 1240. Ate at Rio Grill at corner of Highway 1 and Rio Road, A bit pricey ($7 for turkey sandwich) but had nice wine list. Fueled up at Arco station, just E of Rio Grill. Big Rio Rd is one road S of Carmel Valley Road. Have heard B's singing & chimping in parking lot by guest register. 1851 hours saw ~6 sparrows They were in steep gulleys in Bacharis also in association with >6 Fox Sparrows. The sparrows distressed called (Fox Sparrows "chack-ing" and Song Sparrows "chimping"). Also Ruby-crowned Kinglets "Jit-jit -- je-diting". Saw Numerous >10 Brown Creeper and heard many (>10) Winter Wren. Saw 2 of the worms they were down near The creek. The sparrows were behaving strangely in response to playbacks. They "chirped" but hardly any B's came flying in to give full song. It seemed like late-summer behavior. Lots of "chimping," not much full song. Heard most full song down in gully of John's House. It surprises me that there are no sparrows near the creek, they did seem to be up on the steep sides near the ridge tops where the vegetation is low (~26') Bacharis and grasses. There are willows near The creek

1th, Q 1990 journal 142 Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve, San Lucia, Monterey Co. Calif. Green 27 Feb 0730 hours not too foggy this morning + mild 45°F, low wind (2-4mph) The song sparrows are singing more than yesterday but activity drops off dramatically at 10 AM. Set up mist-nets along the road ~2 miles from Omi's house (main gate area). Caught Hermit Thrush, 2 golden-crowned sparrows, 2 wrentits + 1 winter wren: no song sparrows. The song sparrows tend not to fly across the road and even when I flash or use playback or hazing they all just kind of pop out of the vegetation they do not fly nearer. At 1030 hrs I gave up with road nets and decided I had to put the nets up near the sparrows. The sparrows also bait feed in the road so that traps may not be effective. The hillsides are treacherous - steep & slippery. Poison oak is the dominant vegetation. It is budding out right now so not too tall, but in a few weeks - yikes! I tried forging a path into a sparrow haunt but it took me 1½ hours of much hard work to get a net up but not very well. Lots of brambles and low lying vegetation to get stuck into it. I had the lower pole 3 times all knocked out only 2 seemed to last OK. I need a machete, some rope and stakes to help me set up and down wire. I created a lot of disturbance while I did it and when I finished no sparrows were in sight or sound. I need to get a set of cameras, new laces for my gaiters and P.O. wax and maybe check out homeopathic remedies. The rain gear works well but boy it is like a sauna! I drove back on 101 to 156 at Castroville to +88° 101 N/it is no longer or shorter than fully 1 to 17 to 880, got in traffic back-up in Salinas took 3½ hrs trip.

I agreed to talk to his Natural History / Intro Ecology class next Wednesday. We meet at lab at 5 pm. 18 April Was observing ov BK FW + unmarked ♀ at the thistle patch. Saw her carrying grasses (twice) to a spot in the middle of the patch. I flagged 2 pts one on each side, the nr dept of that there 2 flags is where I saw her so with grass and came back up with an empty mouth. listening at draw with RD FH FW BK he has moved to the upper side (above the road) of the draw. The other male which had been further down has moved up ~20 yds, still not singing where RD FH FW BK was on Monday (at top near road but closer. No sounds of ♀ is 20 minutes. Habitat looks great; thick with willows and some Poison Oak. After 1 hour I saw and heard a possible ♀ at the sw end of the upper draw. Also heard another ♀ further up who may be consorting with her. Returned after lunch to find ♀ in same general location and also in unmarked ♂ in close association while RD FH FW BK was singing like usual 20 yds to the north, humph! Watched wh RD FH FW BK at draw with redwood stum. Female was there, thought she was feeding in nodule patch right near the road as I drew up she slowly flushed. She spent a long time on the S slope of the territory, but nothing concrete. Back at the big thistle patch observed an unmarked ♀ carrying grasses at top of draw with Barberry, her ♂ is also unfounded. BK FH FW 1 think is below this pair in the willows near the spring. Also another unmarked pair on the n end of the Barberry near the road they flew around a lot so probably not set in one area yet. Still no

B. J 1951 Journal 209 Big Creek Reserve, San Lucio, Monterey Co. Caly. 400 feet 15 April Notes on last week's walks. Took a hike to Boronda Camp. Very pretty + steep with three Redwood canyon, grassland + oak woodland. Took 2-2 1/2 hours of leisurely pace to arrive at Boronda a grassy nook surrounded by oaks and a steep canyon. Not too spectacular and seems claustro- phobic to me, but I bet the stay at night are spectacular. especially in August! It got up to boronda + took the Easterly trail of the Interpretive trail (Fegman says the W side is less steep) at about marker 227 here is a sign indicating a branching off to Boronda. At this pt there is a superbai outcrop and it is the site of the mountain lion kill from last summer. This pt marks the end of most of the steep part of the joining the rest of the trail in tule poppy + lupine - lathered grasslands. Campsite has cement grills + picnic tables, no latrine or water. Leading down slope + NE out of Boronda is the trail which will lead to the first spring. ~100-150m out of camp there is a sign post going South, but the biggest trail continues on E. The trail South is the correct trail back to camp. The Easterly trail takes you to a deep Redwood canyon with a fresh running spring all day this trail an away sign indicating an ecological study area. The light trail is only 1 person wide + marked with blue ribbon. At the bottom of the canyon is the remnants of an old homestead (a pine tree + picnic table) just across the stream and up slope 25m is the next spring (~85 F). I left station at 1630hrs

January 8.11 1 PM It is said that the first person to do this was a man named John Smith. He was born in London, England on January 1st, 1900. He moved to New York City when he was 25 years old. In 1925, he started his own business called "Smith's Bakery". His bakery became very popular and soon expanded into other cities. By 1930, there were over 50 Smith's Bakeries across the United States. John Smith died in 1950 at the age of 50. | | | | | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | | 10.80 | 11.70 | 12.60 | 13.50 | | 14.30 | 15.20 | 16.10 | 17.00 | For example: If x = 5, then y = 2x + 3. So if x = 5, then y = 2(5) + 3 = 13. This means that for every value of x, we can find a corresponding value of y using the equation y = 2x + 3. | | | | | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | | 5.0 | 7.0 | 9.0 | 11.0 | | 1.0 | 3.0 | 5.0 | 7.0 | The formula for calculating the area of a rectangle is A = l * w. Where A stands for Area, l stands for length, and w stands for width. For example, if you have a rectangle with a length of 10 cm and a width of 5 cm, then its area would be: A = 10 * 5 = 50 square centimeters. The formula for calculating the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2(l + w). Where P stands for Perimeter, l stands for length, and w stands for width. For example, if you have a rectangle with a length of 10 cm and a width of 5 cm, then its perimeter would be: P = 2(10 + 5) = 30 centimeters. The formula for calculating the volume of a rectangular prism is V = l * w * h. Where V stands for Volume, l stands for length, w stands for width, and h stands for height. For example, if you have a rectangular prism with a length of 10 cm, a width of 5 cm, and a height of 8 cm, then its volume would be: V = 10 * 5 * 8 = 400 cubic centimeters.
