Big Creek Reserve, San Lucia, Monterey Co., California, 400 ft. elev.
9 April Arrived last night at 11pm left Berkeley after
setting up a fungipetri plot at 730 pm. Slept in late
this morning 830 hrs. Met Fegner at the lab.
He said he had left a tractor up at the highlands
camp so I offered to drive him up there. We
spent the morning driving the roads that goes
from the highlands camp. Canoga Trail is here
is found right at the boundary with the Packard
property it goes up 2 down slope then the chaparral
and then rises again, Fegner says it goes to a large
waterfall. The weather station is on the road
that heads N just 30yds from trailhead for Canoga.
If you take the road beyond the reserve onto the
Packard property you go thru a thick grove of
Redwoods - there is a strong spring at a bulldozed area for
refuets in the 1960's. Beyond that you come to a clearing
with an old well which is called Franchman cabin.
Fegner said an old Portuguese man used to live up
there. Lots of flies & heat in the summer. Down the
road to the weather station if you continue you deal
out with site of new research cabin. Fegner says it
will be an open screened-in cabin for summer archeological
workers. Lots of pig wallows.
left Fegner at highlands camp at 1330 after a
lunch of quesadillas at his place. Traveled along the
W road to Packard prop. Heard a few sparrows but
nothing serious yet, seems very dry!
