Journal 208 Big Creek Reserve, 5mi N Lucia Monterey Co., Calig. 400ft elev 19 April I arrived last night about 9:30pm. It was cold and foggy, moon is crescent. Seas are very calm today in comparison to last weeks Hurley NW swell. Last week there were harbor seals hauled up on the beach. Today there is only one pup - no sign of any adults I'm a little concerned for its safety. This weekend is the Laguna Seca motorcycle race - terribly noisy and lots of fast bikes. Today Feyner + I went to Gorda to see the Elephant seals. There must have been 100 hauled up on the beach. The big old's were mostly bitchy in the shallow surf while the females roosted like so many hot dogs on the beach. Gorda is about 17 miles S of the reserve along hwy 1. Access to the seals is via a trail access from the BP gas station / Big Sur Jade Co. At that pt there is a wide pull over area and the seals line the beach 400ft below. You can get right down to the beach and touch the seals! It smells like a farm and they are quite boisterous. Loud low barky noises. In Pacific Valley there is a nice restaurant. Feyner says the apple pie is blueberry pie is great + they have excellent pancakes. Three sea otters are visible in the cove at Big Creek. Brad's Coronado on the rocks. It was cold all day today until 3pm then it got cold and windy at 5pm. Very low tide this morning. No whales yet this year.
