B. J 1951 Journal 209 Big Creek Reserve, San Lucio, Monterey Co. Caly. 400 feet 15 April Notes on last week's walks. Took a hike to Boronda Camp. Very pretty + steep with three Redwood canyon, grassland + oak woodland. Took 2-2 1/2 hours of leisurely pace to arrive at Boronda a grassy nook surrounded by oaks and a steep canyon. Not too spectacular and seems claustro- phobic to me, but I bet the stay at night are spectacular. especially in August! It got up to boronda + took the Easterly trail of the Interpretive trail (Fegman says the W side is less steep) at about marker 227 here is a sign indicating a branching off to Boronda. At this pt there is a superbai outcrop and it is the site of the mountain lion kill from last summer. This pt marks the end of most of the steep part of the joining the rest of the trail in tule poppy + lupine - lathered grasslands. Campsite has cement grills + picnic tables, no latrine or water. Leading down slope + NE out of Boronda is the trail which will lead to the first spring. ~100-150m out of camp there is a sign post going South, but the biggest trail continues on E. The trail South is the correct trail back to camp. The Easterly trail takes you to a deep Redwood canyon with a fresh running spring all day this trail an away sign indicating an ecological study area. The light trail is only 1 person wide + marked with blue ribbon. At the bottom of the canyon is the remnants of an old homestead (a pine tree + picnic table) just across the stream and up slope 25m is the next spring (~85 F). I left station at 1630hrs
