Big Bear Reserve, San Bernardino, Monterey Co. Calif., 400 ft elev.
17 April arrived Baronda at 1400hrs alone w/ one horse
to hot spring was out on the camp road at 1800 hrs
Met Farmer (quickly for me) and hiked down together.
On the 17th of April (my 30th birthday) I took the trail to
Canyons Falls. The trail head is just S (along Pool)
from the highlands camp. Just at the border of the Reserve
and the Packard property, the trail is steep and takes
~ 35-40 minutes at a leisurely pace - to get to the falls
If you take the upstream trail it is about 20 minutes
(15 mins maybe). The falls are spectacular. A four story
drop into an azure pool and then a 12 ft drop into another
pool. Very cold. Upstream views of only on the river
and the canyon - very nice rushing water but no falls.
At the base of the trail there is a couple benches + I think
there is a grate. Very little area for tents, but lots of
great pools for diving. A bolted Kingfisher (?) was
staked out the area. The best views of the falls is
from the opposite side of the creek from the trail. Climb
up on the rocks and sit in the watching the Big leaf maple
truly spectacular view and spray from the falls. The upward
corning is hard and takes ~ 1 hour I left the
falls at 1500 hrs, took the trail to the upstream areas
back out at 1630 (a little winded).
Still not much spider activity.
