INSTRUCTIONS. Every officer or other employee of the Department of Agriculture conducting work while traveling will, so far as practicable, keep a diary in which will be recorded, under an appropriate date entry, a concise statement of all important matters pertaining to such work and also of any general matters that may be of interest to the Department. This diary will be retained by the official preparing same, but will be subject to call by the administrative officers of the Department, including the disbursing officer, at any time. When this book is filed another may be secured by application to the chief of your Bureau or to the disbursing officer of the Department. James Wilson Secretary of Agriculture.

Arrived at St Louis 10:20 Lift at 11. Northern street 6 P.M. Sunday June 7. Reached Rockford at 11:30 Lunched at 2:30 Battle before dark Monday June 8. Reached Seattle at 5:15 P.M. met by Oxford. Registered at Hotel Washington. Hotel Stays to wait for Canadian Communes Tuesday June 9 Paid a visit to McCollushe with Capt Whinnett Wednesday Attended meeting Tofersen Society and Sport Club [illegible] on Steamboat.

June 21. to St Paul We reached St Paul Island shortly after 5 o'clock and anchored off the village. The Buffalo Line to take supplies and work on the council station was in the bay. We had supper on the boat and shortly afterward went ashore. We were met by Mr. Hatton agent, in charge of our quarters in the big Company House. Monday June 22. Capt. Ubertth and some of his officers came ashore and we went out to Girdlech Borsky and looked over the coytery. Many bureaus and sporophytes. In the afternoon we went to Katoow Borsky and looked at caves, just beyond and separated from it only by a sheer cliff as Lukann. Both were well supplied with bells, a few of which had corro and thin were a few frogs. We saw several foxes and many old huts. Also where recorded for a nest of kiweralesia pacifies but I could not get at it. It was beneath an archway in the cliffs. Tuesday June 23. Mr Whitney counted the 6 bulls and Karems on both batteries and found 122 bulls Ozford out I took quite a series of movie pictures of a karem with about a dozen cows. During a temporary absence of the bull a cow over came up from the water and entered the karem. The other cows greeted her by moaning and biting. When the master turned and saw the newcomer he rushed through the karem to the cow, but as he reached her she broke away and went into the water. He did not attempt to detain her, and paid no more attention to her. A bull near by with only one cow seemed sleepy and paid no attention to the large karem even when at mos practically unguarded. We went onto the Kaulau ground and set up our Cameras at the pond of the small cliff atop the lower part of the mass

The bulls fall over to the beach and sand, into the wet sand and some from fights on coast. In both scenes a variety of scenes. The bulls frequently came back and just may up to dirty hands and also bills and cows left off a beginning running. The bulls were apparently fearless and charged as if we approached for near. Apparently of the cows has not staggered but let the bulls away. The latter would stand this point. There was many faces about the paint of the black. July 1. There was a good drive from the Reef Friday. The natives bow up early and before breakfast travelled about 20 miles to the killing grounds near the little Lake. Killing began just after breakfast a lot of about 150-20 were separated and then supplied to the Specimen were clubbed to death. There were then struck - the heart of the animal and allowed to bleed. The total kill was 21kg of these were allocated 35, which were tagged and measured for total length. (I guess to base of tail. They were saved as skins. Three others were measured for total length 4 with both clippers and were planned as complete specimens. 4 others where tagged (T.10inch head) allowed them to be dead also were also saved as complete specimens. These were measured (1) More than one place (2) with base of flippers (3) with growth. These 35 skins were weighed and recorded and each skin was measured for length and breadth by being laid out on the table as naturally as possible not being stretched, and the cages being pulled out just enough to counteract the curling mouth which takes place when a fresh skin is laid down. Thus being done, the 35 skins were called in the sugar cane being put in a heap by themselves the 7 specimens were turned over to a native gate who as skilled in preparing skins for specimens. These will be salted in the regular way or that if they are not salted as specimens they may be diverted to flippers and skin. During the drive this was pleased on drums mostly sweet 50 on killing frosts (sweet) 4148 " " 4-5 year old 62- 2 year old. July 3 event over by Elizabeth In afternoon and watched some of the herds for about half an hour that had passed. I saw 600 cows come in within a hundred yards. Several cows wandered about the area across the brook. Some of the cows coming in are plenty ground, most appear to have pumped. That is, the number of bulls seems to nearly equal the number of cows on a herm The ordinary course of the bull is a roughing, gustural roar, varying in intensity according to his temper and provocation. So the bull came into areas with cows We estimated 200 bachelors on the Bridlech banking grounds and letting boys and girls in the Beef Banking grounds The afternoon was rainy and we did not see any fixed books Soon a bull leap from a ledge at least ten feet high on to the rocks below to stop a cow which had started away Saturday, July 4. St. George for South Island about 10 a.m. Got arriving about 12 o'clock. The sky was cloudy but with little fit. Arrived at St. George about 5:30 p.m. A boat came out to pick us up. Mr. Carter and Mrs. Hanna on board. We were informed by the whaler that we were assigned quartering in the Armory. Left town and the boat sailed at the nearest wharf. Saturday July 11. We went all in the steam launch steering to land at Almy's until evening near Lake Philomene. When we passed it over we docked there, that we went on to the high cliffs on Laurel and climbed back up a cliff again and did a lull in the weather.

July 12 7:00 to 8:30 am. Troop The morning was quite rainy. In the afternoon as I seemed forming off on the north ropery intending to take a break there. The clouds did not promise well, so I decided to go on to the high cliff. When I got there I saw a little flock of dull sunlight and I took quite a lot of birds from that billed mountain. Red Capped Willet, Heron, Puffin & Parquail awkward. The latter were watched. The Gulls also were just hatching or had just come up to about two or three weeks old. Many very old Stellar Gannets were among the breeders. One of the men of the cutter picked up a bird who barked above him. July 17 The day was cold with some rain. In the morning we counted harems on Kitovi with the following results. July 20. We went We remained at W[il]and hoping to take photos of the porcheros and also maris but the day was rainy and after waiting until 2 o'clock in your up and drive home we arrived a few miles off but then still about three breeding grounds put the tundra. A great many glorious winged gulls seen in the lakes. July 21. This was a drive in the early morning and a killing. We took 6 sufficed year olds and 4 branded year olds, taking measurements and weights. of the skins beyond and poked allowed to rise while I took morning picture of the whole performance but at night was not so good. Afterwards we went out to the Newdeen pond, and took a pile of moose calves. We had some difficulty in getting them to move to suit us. There were nearly or about 70 in all but we could not get an accurate count.

Aug 4. Jepolmin In the afternoon we went out to Jepolmin in the hills and counted the population. Mr. Sharma told us that he had found a small hunting ground about a mile east of Jepolmin this morning. When there it used to be a regular hunting ground and many peas were killed there. We fired 2 bullets but apparently no cows. Samcup We started to go over the hills along shore to Gourde Cove, but as fogford was such we gave up the idea and cut across to strike the line near the village. Tuesday, Aug 11. About The middle of the afternoon the McCulloch (blue algae) came in from Cape Hatteras. From Brevard Bay, Judge Brown and his son got the boat, went down to St. Augustine. It's thought we might have to go down with him but for a period of time. Reynolds got a sight that we could be able to understand because the wind had not been the sets. Thursday, September 3 We passed Shihaldon Volcanos between 6 & 7 vehicles. Then we went past Staten and then between Deer Island and Thin Point. Then between Dalgoi and Ki-marland.
