"Dalhousie See Sel. Linn. Canada 1879-80. Leetini D, Eels. Same in 1880-82, Leetini D. Devonian. "Seen at intervals on the Lower Restigouche River, and which form a synclinal basin extending from near the town of Dalhousie eastward to a point about four miles above Campbelltown, and terminating on the south side of the river at Old Mission Point, and on the opposite side at Point a Bordeaux." Bounded on both sides by trap. The Devonian rests against the trap. Partly bridges in other places the traps are intruded. Between Dalhousie station and the bridge at Campbellton the shore

"is occupied by the trap. At the bridge are seen large ledges of argy [illegible] the dubris of the traps. These are the basal beds of the Devonian. Have no stratification. Can be seen behind the town in a ridge. Campbelltown is built on the trap. Looks stratified. Along the river front of the town from the steamboat way westward occur the Devonian rocks. "Above the station at Campbell- town hard thick-bedded sandstone, intersected by thin dykes of trap, con-tains abundance [abundance] of fossil plants" Psilophyton 2of., Lycopsides and Cordaites. On the Quebec side good exposures are at Gros Point opposite Campbellton, These place probably near centre of syncline. "Below this, exposures of similar rocks occur at Pointe la Garde and along the shore to near Battery Point." Sandy layers have abundance of plants. "Thence they occupy the greater part of the shore down to the mouth of the Daumenace River and lie in a nearly horizontal position." This Devonian is cutain by the Bonaventure. In the core above Fleursst Point grey beds of the Devonian like those of Pointe la Garde have "splendid specimens of Devonian fishes". This locality seems to be "immediately opposite Dalhousie". "The grey beds between Yaetta and Fleurent Points are very rich in fossil forms of fishes and plants. This is the collecting ground of Ells, Heaton and Foord. Pterichthys and six other genera. This horizon is said to be near top of Devonian. Foord also found fishes in the brecciated limestone and associated beds at Campbellton. Coccosteus, Cephalaspis, Clmacanthus, Ptery- gotus and Agolara. This horizon is said to be near the base of Devonian series.

"Dalhousie Silurian. "The rocks of this system occupy an extensive belt reaching across the entire breadth of the Province, from the State of Maine to the Bay Chaleur." In the east they rest upon Cambro- Silurian, A gentle inclined basin about 100 miles in breadth. Along the lower Restigouche river they are broken through by dykes of diorite and felsite in extensive masses. From Dalhousie to Ed River but no less than five distinct ridges of trap can be seen. The depressions are occupied by wedge-shaped areas of Silurian rocks which are highly fossiliferous"

Charles Stuar's house in east to Bon Ami Point. The traps 'have been thrust up along the lines of bedding subsequent to the deposits of the Silurian rocks.' Other good Silurian localities may be found to the south between Elkhousie and Glenlivet settle- ment. "Along the straight road leading west from Eel River to Bal moral and Blair Athol settlements, as well as on the north branch of that river, about two and a half miles west of Shannon- vale post-office at the Eel River Forks" If there is a good chance to collect about Black Cape to the N.E. of Little Cascapedia river do so, Best plan will be to go to Mr Richmond

and by carriage to Black Coves. The fossils are said to be exceedingly abundant and of Crinoids, Corals etc. As the horizon is limestone the time represented probably is Oria- saram. About the town of New Carlisle are other Silurian rocks. In the cliff and on the main road leading inland from the center of the town. At Port Daniel are exposures of the encinite limestone. To be seen about the harbor. Also north- eastly in two parallel ridges, from the upper bay part of the bay, the lower one within a few hundred gards to the east of the road that goes up along the side of the large lagoon. On the east branch of Port Daniel River the limestone

custom genid grits probably at the Cambro-Liluvian contact; 1500 paces further up stream in dark grey and black slates occur graptolites. Gerl. Canada 1763, p. 443-4 gives the Port Daniel section as 3340 foot thick. The lower limestones 700 foot thick abound in Diáfuran fossils. The section here is at base Deliceras em. Gomata (140), green shales with fossils in di (200), limestone (50), red shales (200), grey li. shale with many corals (900), grey a genid li. full of fossils (150), Canda- salli shale (500), red shales (500), grey li with fossils (200 feet), grey compact li. indistinctly bedded abounding in fossils (500 ft.).

Nearly all my Caper Rosin material is from these 70 feet. From beneath the red beds I have a few prints, mostly Pelecyfods and Ostracods, but as they are the same species as those I gave I did not keep them separate. Caudu-sulli abundant. Saw no prints from these beds as they weather down in a stream of small pieces - flakes. Saw no fossils in these beds in the fallen blocks. Only small curly worm burrows. Also a Comularia,

Cape Gaspe'. along the coast of Cape Brein. From below the section is 1 grey limestones in layers of from 6 to 8 inches thick, which are separated by bands of greenish calcareo-argillaceous shale, gradually increasing in amount towards the upper part. Abounds in fossils. 70 feet. 2. Greenish calcareo-argillaceous shales intricately stratified with red beds. Remains of plants near middle 90 feet. 3. Olive-green calcareo-argillaceous shales, with occasional nodules and layers of compact limestone. Fossils near top. 170 feet. 4. Grey limestones in thin beds, separated by grey calcareous shales of which there

This matches the design seen in Grand River book with *Chimets canadensis*, Lep. Habelidis and Leptotrichus. One of all the forms from this breed are from this year. All except the tail bits in the Canada-pulli silicem Leds. A copy of the trace of the game in the R. harrandi bed of 8ana errors, 8ana track is near the top.

Grey nodular shale limestones, succeed ed by grey limestones of a purer nature; these are followed by a second series of leds like the first, in which rest gremil calcaen-arenaceous shales, terminating in a thin layer, which is nearly green. Candugalli common troughs. Dalmantis fleuretyx. 300 fut. 8. Grand brève limestones of Charles. Lts of pools. 5 500 fut. = 2010 fut. left on the Blue nose Express for Bally- ville - the center of the Evangeline county stopped at Kent Lodge kept by Mrs J Moore. At a little after three started out in a carriage to see the Evangeline country about Grand Pre. On the shore of Mines Basin saw the Tertiary sandstone much in character like that of the Connecticut valley. On the ridge back of the village of Grand Pre saw some Devonian plants of Ptilophyton and Lepidodendron. Then drove over the ridge through the Bassford village. Arrived at Kent Lodge at 6.20 P.M. Took six and shots about Evangeline Road on Grand Pre.

2835 Dolfrille, July 22-05 Spent the morning and afternoon at two small quarries about two miles north of Dolfrille on the road to Grand Pre. The first quarry belongs to Mr. Harris and shows about ten feet of Black Shale having Devonian land plants. The other quarry is on higher level and shows probably not less than 30 feet. The horizon of the first quarry is beneath the seemed. The black shales pass upward into sandy shales and then into thin reddish sandstones. The plants from the black and iron stained shales are from the lowest horizon of the first quarry while the sandstones are from the top of second quarry. Some Psilophyta came from the shales beneath the sandstone.

Dolforlle Sunday July 23. left London started out at 9 A.M in a carriage to Cape Blomidon, 21 miles out. One has to make a wide detour to the west to get over the various estuaries which makes the distance to Blomidon or far. The range of hills to the south of Dolf- ville is called South Mt. while that repre- sented by Blomidon is called North Mt. The latter has an attitude above low tide of 70 feet. and is composed of red clays and trap of Triassic age. All in Triassic from near the Dolforlle meadows to far beyond Blomidon run into Ors Brunswick. It seems to lie in a syncline. At Blomidon in the trap are found givels lined with amygdala, These are formed in the amygdulose. In the red clays are rarely then seams of gypsum. The red flood of the tides is largely due to the soft red Triassic clays. This a sandy mud- structure without trace of organic remains. The

leading in districts, nearly hanged with local undulations. At a time not so long ago geologically the Bay of Fundy stood at least 50-100 feet higher than now for the great grass meadows beneath in by dikes are the level of our former flood plain. These grass meadows are known at the lower levels or at Plimidan may be seen another five or ten feet higher. Plimidan Cape. Form high line high tide grass meadows at dolphric. The Permian of South Ark dips about 15° or deeper towards Mines Basin. As there in Permian in M.B. it seems that the Triassic was laid down in a synclinal valley and once that the Triassic extended across from M.B. to the top of South Ark. After Triassic times it suffered erosion by (lyocene) erosion and later these rolling waves invaded by

the Atlantic and the present Bay of Fundy thoroughly established. The difference in level of the Bay of Fundy may have been caused by local flexing during the Ice Period forcing the tides into Mines Basin at higher levels. As other bays were formed more head water was required lowering the water in Mines Basin. South Mt. back of Wolfville has the strata dipping to the north-west about 20 to 30 degrees. The village is on Ordovician strata while to the north comes in the Triassic. Beneath the Ordovician are very much compressed shales of a Hurick-type shales with many bands of a gellwood shale. These are probably Ordovician. [illegible] Over Mt. Bish at Kent Lodge, Instructor with Keller at Yale.

Bolfrille Monday July 24- Packed a box and shipped by express to Windsor. Then walked over to the Top of Smith Out and looked into Bexham Valley. Left Bolfrille on the 2.30 pm train when we arrived at 3.20. Stopped at the home of "Jane Hiett" not slept as a hotel. Can't recommend it as a hotel. Rate 1.00 per day. At 4 P.M. started out for Millers Green when we collected until 5.30,

2836 Windson July 25-Tuesday. Spent the entire day at Windoners Point one mile of the Avon from the two bridges collecting in the "Upper Windon" lime- stone. Seemed quite a lot of excellent material. The "Upper Windon limestone" is between 30ft 40 feet thick and in the upper two thirds is of the same nature as the Chiller quarry dolomites. Below this the beds gradually change into a softer yellowish dolomite, the fossils become rarer and finally are almost none before the gypsiferous 'gme' is attained which underlies this dolomite. (See beyond) The gme from which our finds came is near the center of the "Upper Windon limestone". Here the shells are wonderfully abundant, are scattered about without regular order, usually of both valves but some single ones are present. It is only where the beds are considerably weathered that we can get the shells out. Otherwise one can

2836 the cavities of the brachiopods everywhere in these dolomites. At Drillis quarry the Rhyzora and especially Rhombifera are far more abundant. At one place at Maxinus Point saw a crinoided zone of other fossils. The question arises is there any difference in fauna between the Drillis quarry and Maxinus Point limestone. So far as the fauna is concerned but are alike. If of one fauna then the fauna at Maxinus Point within the dolomite and in the same as that of Drillis quarry. In this case the dolomites gradually shade upward into gypsum. In are probably the structure is as on the opposite page. (The next day found the fault as indicated and thus further complicates the relation of the articulati to the fossiliferous dolomites and the gypsum beds).

Brindon July 26. Wednesday. Spent the morning on the shore between the bridges and up stream to the dem brick estate. Made the sections on the opposite page. Returned at eleven and packed two boxes. One has Maxine Point material, the other Millus quarry and the bridge specimens. Shipped these two boxes at the Dollyville box in the afternoon by freight via Jan- netts and Boston. Left at (Brindon) 3.10 and arrived at Halifax at 4.40. Took a carriage to Queens Hotel. The sections on the two opposite pages are correlated by numbers. This seems to be the correlation but the lithic conditions of both limbs of the anticline are somewhat different and I am not certain of the correlation. My former view of a fault in the apex of the anticline is not now borne out as the section can be seen better now than formerly. What the relation of the dolomites (fractures) and the

The city Park and the Park on the arm of Halifax bay are very interesting places. In the afternoon strolled about town and saw the Provincial Museum. The name of the quarry owner at Windsor is J.T. H. Muller, Ferry Farm, Windsor, N.S.

Halifax July 28 - Friday At 8 A.M. we left Halifax on the "Ocean limited" and arrived at Dalhousie at 8 P.M. with an hour's stop at Dalhousie Junction. A fine day with two good meals aboard the train. Excellent presents. Two miles out of Truro towards Annoton one sees the above tidal flats, the same as those about Grand Pre. Less than one mile farther red rocks appear apparently Triassic. The country about here is the same geologically and in climate as that of Wolfville. Both regions belong to the head of the Bay of Fundy. At Annoton is dug a red fine grained sandstone apparently Triassic, also very used at Halifax in finer building. The Brookville Carboniferous (Windom) locality seems to lie on the line of strata of South Mt. In the topography as seen from the car, mudways south and continues beyond.

Brockville and may clearly be seen from Trento. The Cobeguido Ruts from the other side of the valley. In passing through the Cobeguide one sees in the side-walls cuts of pink red rocks and shales with strong dips, Farther along come in darker much folded rocks I faintly either Dev. or Camb. Dips apparently all towards Trento. Highest elevation of track in the Cobeguide through the Rut, 570 feet. Gordons cemetery. In going down the Cobeguido the same rocks appear as going up. At Gantmore the land is again on the upper Grand Pre flood plain and seemingly this level goes through to the Cumberland strait from the Bay of Fundy. In many places one sees the same red flood streams as at Brockville. Only that here these tidal flats are more extensive and are strewn with hay barns but no habitations.

These are the Tintamarre marshes of 40 square miles or about 25,600 acres. See Boucher p.75. In a conversation with a foreigner he says these marshes do not connect with Cumberland Straits as there is higher land along this coast. It seems divided as if at one time the Bay of Fundy connected with Cumberland Strait thus this narrow neck of land now uniting Nova Scotia to New Brunswick and the Continent. Stopping at Humphreys House in the night. The main body move to Mr Chas. Stuart's house at Bellevue Cove. Made the acquaintance of Mrs McFar - a former tree nurse at Dalhousie.

2845 Dalhousie July 29 Saturday walked out less than one mile to Charles Stewarts home where we are staying. Sat located during the morning and after dinner collected fruits. Spent most of the afternoon at the prominent locality, i.e. [Little Point] or the former farthest to the D.D. of Stewarts house. Here Leptaenia cncara is common and has a long range. Also found Hyypicula near salentu, Anastrophus, Vireia pulamellona, Amphithera, etc. The fruits are kept separate according to sexual genus and will be checked on June later. All the cords of lot 4 are from around the Little Point and have fallen down the cliff to the bend. As far as I can see from the edges of these beds at the Point the cords appear sparingly above the Hypp- cula gone for not more feet. I rather think that mats are from less than 10 feet above the Hyppiculas.

Dalhousie July 30 Sunday. Litrop offered the shore to show me the localities. Elton is number. Then went to church with Mr Stewart. In the afternoon collected cobs at low tide. Dalhousie July 31 Monday Collected all the morning around Little Point beyond Stewarts property. This is on the otherside of the largest intrusive hills. From the beds around the Point stick out high of these above the intrusive. Here it is better exposed to the weather breaking down liberating its fossils in the talus covering the intrusive. Picked up a lot of material here including many corals. While the horizon is the bigridula zone yet the fossils are of various zones probably for a thickness not less than 50 feet. On following pages are diagrams

"It is these reds that one sees around the Little Point high up in its cliff from which climb the goats I my left Red! Tortar thist Red 2 - 6 ft. Red 3 10 ft. Sphodula beds in the face of Little Point below Mr. Stewart farm. There are three estimates older than this to get thickness about 9"-10" Forals my own care On any ends but all or surface at Stewart cave. Standard beds cut main a hi, Full of Aggidula Skels with some Aggidula Blue shols, Beginning of Leptrisen concaara. Blue sholes are rathering yellowish with thin bands of hi. At the top the sholes are orbichent but come spotted due to chagel organisms, Partly not less than 175 feet thick. For other details see carta of five years ago. Dip about 60°, N.E. Intersive Red Mass dy t. Big Point above Mr. Charles Stewart post house stands.

to show the position of these beds. There should be restudied along with the section and notes I got years ago. Returning to Stuart for dinner found Lambe collecting. He has just finished a thru woods collecting, his own St Jeanmanus after Bethriolepis and other fishes. Said he got one good specimen and other former ones. Mathiot hard to secure and are must be secured through quarrying. The place is 1700 faces of the bay from the ferry landing. Plants and ferns are also found. Collected all the afternoon in the three layers beneath the tree.

Madame - one specimen. My low level between two ridges about [illegible] miles wide. The front: Blue shales with few fossils, dip as elsewhere, about 60° [illegible] Little Point Cock's [illegible] shales in English beds. of trace Not more than 15-20 sq feet here. Therefore the front came from these former hills. [illegible] South, about Little Point,

Dalhousie August 1. Tuesday. A dull day and as one has mind unpacked material spent the morning packing. Collected during the afternoon in the higher beds beneath the 18 mile limestone. Found pelycospods and gastropods but by no means or many as five years ago, they try again. Found a little fault of this far this in the fossil cliffs the afternoon. "Dalhousie Aug. 2 Wednesday. Raining all day. Packed and collected some material around Little Point. Dalhousie Aug 3-Thursday. Collected all the day along Stewarts Cree. Dalhousie Aug 4-Friday. Packed four boxes and one panel of fossils in the morning. In the afternoon looked over the entire section and closed up note taking. Was greatly surprised to find another set of shells, strata on the other side of the intrusion meeting Little Point. Have no doubt this part of the low land.

Another Favositae bed. Cocks not or perhaps as below. Shales with zones of gastropods, cleefords and Trigonia? These are scattered throughout but are only abundant at the middle and base. Limestone Ordnite. < du fruits, S. shemardi bed. < Min furcation here one frid. < 18 ft above mou frid. < 36 ft above base many fossils, like that fig 11 in this place. Also two fine Trigonia's come from here Ordnite beds might have life < One problem the limestone seems gass. but its Cocks along had here for 450 yards, Shale can be seen of lower Hils for 30 yards. I have no doubts that the shales are in due up to the Ordovite, 120 yards beyond the 240 yard place where Cocks are still present."

Dalhousie August 5. Saturday. A bright sunny morning. At 9.30 o're leave the Charles Stewart home to take the steamer for Pucei. Paid for one crate's travel $7.00. Will pay Mr. Stewart for shipping the boxes from here and these will send him from Pucei, Laspe etc. Left Dalhousie on the Lady Eileen a small steamer at 11.30 A.M. Took a round trip ticket including one-half of a state room and two meals for $8.00. The north shore of Bay de Chaleum one hour out of Dalhousie show distinct evidence of higher water level, steep cliffs come sharply down to the farm lands with gradual slope to the bay. Those at their highest may be as high as 150 feet above the present level of the bay. The high mountain one sees to the east of Dalhousie is Tiacadigash Point, ridges of dolerite Around the Point comes in Caseapedin Bay with

the stream Cascoedia. The first stopping place is at Carleton at the foot of Fracadiack Mts. It has all the points to make it a summer resort. Our next stop in Maria on the lofty mountains about. Then New Richmond. After leaving New Richmond (m) = 5 miles at 20 minx one sees an upheaved section for more than one mile of greenist and red beds followed by dolerite followed by red beds dipping about 30° . The dolerite is "Black Cope" and the red Devonian rocks "Red Cope". The greenist and red beds must be the Heldeburian sections according to my note it seems like the Nejawan. The red beds to the N.E. of Red Cope have a dip of about 30° and then are near horizontal for a mile, then a low beach where the strata rise a little towards Coplin. This should be a fine place to examine the strata and especially about Black Cope. The best place to study these rocks north from Coplin. Next stop Coplin. For 21/3 miles more to the N.E. the red beds are seen in the sea cliffs. Red beds come in as the

within five miles cliff somewhat towards the N.E. This is St. Bonaventure. from which the formation probably takes its name. Next stop Bonaventure. New Carlisle, Paspébiac. Above and below Paspébiac one sees a long straight coast with a cliff of about 20 to 30 feet. Above this a gently ascending land to a ridge probably not more 150 feet above the bay. This other side one the impression from former shale lime and litters. The faces of the cliffs show us nearly horizontal Carboniferous strata. The other stopping places during the night are St. Godfroi, Chicagawelle, Port Daniel, Lance aux Bascons, Newport, Grand Patro Mills Little Patro, Grand Rivon, Little Rivin East, Cape Core, Perce, Malbaire, Point St. Peter, Douglastown, Basque. 2846 Pierce August 6 Sunday. Arrived this morning at 3.30, for quarters at Philip Le Brutillier. Retired and got up at 7 A.M. After breakfast studied over the hills facing Malbai. In the afternoon visited the Rock, Mt Joli and along the road to the Bonaventure bays, and then down the road to beyond the Light house (Whitehead). In this reconnaissance observation one is impressed with the idea that after Cretaceous time all the Palaeogene strata were elevated and placed in practically their present position. The topography must then have been bold, into which the Bonaventure sea must have then, as the present sea does now, found itself far into the land. At all places the Bonaventure is made up of a coarse conglomerate in which the cement whitish Oligocian limestone pebbles form a conspicuous part. elevation subjected to movements and warping given the Carboniferous its present undulations, thus I Mt. St Anne in Bonaventure and as its elevation is about 1200 feet one realizes not only the minimum amount of elevation but also the great thickness of this Carboniferous employed. Another fact impresses one and that is that (all Cape Cormon) all the Ordovician we see here are then folded light blue (weather may whiten much more). limestones of great thickness in the aggregate. On the other side of the Basque Peninsula the Ordo- vician beds are all floccy shales. Is it possible that these two areas were separated by a barrier in which has laid down the Lewis shales and in the other the Atlantic type of Ordovician limestones and limestones, In the one nearly all muds with a proftilic fauna in the other nearly all limestones with a sparing fauna.

Perce August 7. Monday. Collected all the bley along the Road between the steam way and Out Joli, Collected only Perce or Christiany fossils. Seamed about are the species listed by Clarke, however one cannot make a large n complete collection without equal time. The specimens are not good but about as good as Christiany finds generally are. Perce Aug. 8. Tuesday. Spent the morning along the Road looking for fossils in the beds beneath the Perce beds. Secured a few things but almost nothing in the way of fine fossils, On Sunday I saw in these beds the common shell of Dalhousie and the clutched of Farvites. Sept. I left blue shales with bands of lime- stone. This is the first port Richmond, and it again remains at the mayor's office. These became mine when dust (or) a dam and in there I secured after dry and care- ful collecting a small fauna consisting of: Calymene, Platymetopus, Amplexus, Trimuculus, Illecebus, Loriculus, Plectambonites, Phyllopodia and a sponge or Pascerlus. In the afternoon had two men take us to the east side of Pierce Rock. On going there soon after leaving the craft one is im- presed with the strange appearance of the rock aby the first rains) but in around to the East side one is more impressed with the Rock than by the western arm because the arms are deeper and then is more green plant coating probably lichens. The strata stand true as follows: Bmaventure dip: Ordiverian = Richmond Ordiverian Vertical beds of Lilliasian with fossils. (? Dalhousie) bed Bevel of Malbari. Borden went down the beach the other (Smith) way to collect Orstany fossils but saw nothing of value, Cauda fallii in abundance. Packed two boxes in the afternoon and addressed them to Charles Clervaut Dalhousie. Mr. Beard will ship them tomorrow by the Lady Eileen. Spent an hour at the splendid home of Mr. and Mrs. James.

Can recommend Mr. P. Le Bon tell us as (Correspondent) a place to stop. Mr. Beard says a better and cheaper place to stop in Mr and Mrs. Lempere Scott and Jersey people. Mr. Beard also said he would keep us. Has a daughter May. In coming along the Murailles this morning one sees how the Cape Barre beds some swing around and stand vertical as in Pierce Rock. Towards the Grand Coupe appear the Mt. Joli beds and then a fault which dips in the same Ordovician beds as those the other side of Mt. Joli. I do not see more than this one fault. Continuing from that out Charlie's fault between Cape Adams over to Pierce Rock is due to turning and dipping at an angle. Collected a few fossils from the very bed against which the Ordovician beds rest. Between them lies a fayer and angular unconformity. The upturned Pierce rocks were more deeply along the Murailles eroded before the Bonaventure formation was laid upon them than in the case at Pierce Rock. The Bonaventure conglomerate comes down as Red Tof to within 20 to 30 feet of the beach. The Trentonian fauna here is widely different in that of the U. S. Of brachiopods there are

almost none. Even the byzgos are scarce whilst in time of the entire fauna. Ostracods and trilobites, Calpifacies and Halysites really make of the meagre faunas. The Grand Coupe Ordovician beds are much thicker and have more limestones than those near Mt. Joli. This means either very unequal or something before the Mt. Joli mass deposited or the fault between these two systems cuts out different zones. One reason why so few fossils are found is due to the immense crumpling, those beds have undergone. Still the fauna at best must have been a very small one. If all the Gaspe limestones and sandstones were also deposited about Pierce then the Murchilles and Pierce uplifted rocks must have originally stood nearly two miles high. These Outs once uplifted towards the close of the Devonian or early Caribou times and furnished the rocks for the Bonarantine conglomerate of township but a thickness.

2847 Baske, Aug 10. Thursday. Arrived here last night at 12.30. Left Pucci at 8.30. Raining (showers) this morning. Write letters in a time. In the afternoon collected Lower Devonian fossils in the Baske sandstone about 1/2 miles of the river and back on the hill side. It is on the first cross trail from Baske. Decided a "portage" small collection due in part to Mr. Clarke work of last year. Found Tentaculites elongatus Lep. Platellites, Pen. ovata, Chonetes, Amos- trophia, Leptostrophia 2 sp., Spirifer 2 sp. Pelecypods 4 sp. Gast. 1 sp. Mr. Dixon the American council called and gave us B.J. papers.

Gaspe Aug 11 - Friday In the morning looked over the rocks - Gaspe sandstones - showing along the shore opposite the village beyond Ferry Point. Saw only fragments of plants, all unrecognizable. In the afternoon met Gordon and a Mrs. Riley of Montreal (Marine Invertebrate man) collected at the same place as yesterday after- noon. Found more fossils and two additional species. Gaspe Aug 12 Saturday Set up early and packed a load with fossils before breakfast. At nine took the ferry to Peninsula where we arrived about ten o'clock. Expected to have no trouble to secure a man to take us from Peninsula to Grand Mere and after 1/2 hours crawling around found a man willing to take us down the coast the ten miles if we would wait until he had his hay in the same.

2848 This was accomplished about 4 P.M. and at 5 o’c we were off only to be returned by a storm. with much rain before another half hour. However we arrived at Mrs Daniel Garce’ house by 7.30 P.M. The regular man and horses at Pennicula is Thomas J. Miller but as he is very apt to out with drummers or Mrs Oscar helps out. Miller place is also the post office run by his sister Mary J. Grand Greve- Aug 13 Sunday. Spent the morning photographing the St Alban’s ciffs and clams along the sea shore along Rosin cove. The castellated cliffs stood out finely in the bright morning air; towering of probably 1200 to 300 feet. The chances for securing the fossils from beds 1 and 2 are probably less favorable than five years ago as there is very little talus fallen.

down. Looking over this very hard flinty material I noticed that near all of the strata where composed of the Canada-Salli marlins and arenige Dolmanites. This trilobite known is also met with in the top beds of the next lower zone (100 fut) but its true home is in the higher canada-galli beds. The 100 feet zone is nearly devoid of recognizatu forms but there are several beds with communitus material most of which is erimoid. The crots- crust is also seen here in just its marling are seen at near all horizons. Sunday noticed it even in Shrym 1 at Rose Cave. In the 175 feet zone in the upper half occur the large Leptocrolia, a large Chonetu, Orthothels and Ostracoda. In the lower portion in the bed of the broth occur Chonets canadensis and Spirifis munchisoni? The days work was not very satisfactory. Later. Do it possible that the upper Cristan or P. hamandii beds come in here just above these Chonets beds? It is possible.

[Gordon leaves] Grand Sere - Aug 15 - Tuesday, Crawled rock all day on the bare track. Collected a lot of material from two layers within two feet of each other. Mostly all bivalves. Many ostracods were noticed with a few mollusca and some trilobites. The rock is very hard and flinty and as the shells stand at all angles many fine specimens cannot be secured, yet the faunule is very interesting. Also some lightly colored material from a few feet higher. Gordon arrived during the morning and left for Gaspe Basin at about two in the afternoon. He will return to Campbellton on Thursday morning on the Lady Eileen. The main Sere of this Grand Sere faunule, I am inclined to be either the very highest Ordovician or clearly Cam-er dian, probably rather the latter. Many of the Ordovician species held over here but in general only species are of Camberan affinity.

Grand Greve, Aug 16 Tuesday. Collected during the morning in the highest limestone within 20 feet of the Gaspe at Little Bridge sandstone. Did not see many fossils and those collected are the same species as those found on the Bare Head. Saw L. arenatus. D2135 In the afternoon collected along the way road to within a mile of the lith house. At one locality in compact blue limestone found a few large Stephersdatos. These are associated with Pennsylvanian productus and Phyllophorus arenarius but did not see any fossil enough to take along. This is probably the Lehighquay porte horizon. At the farther locality corals predominate but they are so poor as to have little value. Probably two species of Favosites occur here and several species of cup corals. Sprigg's form in my view in fact leave but two papromets. Certainly these corals could not give rise to the regular Onm- doya coral fauna of New York or Louisville. Pelagyporids and gastropods are associated with these corals. This zone is about the middle or below the middle of the Grand Greve formation.

In looking back over the stratigraphy of the Grand Grove formation I conclude that the beds on the Bare Head are within 100 feet of the Basque sandstone. In collecting at the "silver mine" at Little Basque the few fossils seen indicate that the species are the same as those of the Bare head although the horizon is within 20 feet of the base of the Basque sandstone. All the localities along the canyon road are within the upper 200 to 300 feet of the Grand Grove formation. In none of these beds are the Canada - falls ammonite and while in the lower 100 feet of this formation, at that level they practically make up the beds while other fossils are practically absent except Dalmanites. If all of number 8 - Grand Grove formation - is equal to the Oriskany, i.e. the original Oriskany (= Upper Oriskany) and Canada - falls group of Esopus of New York then no.7 with its Chonetes canadensis fauna must be the equivalent in time of the Lower Oriskany. If this correlation is correct and the further

"One that beds members 1 and 2 are Heldentayian. the question arise what do beds 3,4,5 and 6 repre- sent in New York. It is probable that beds nos 1 and 2 are equal to the Creymans (possibly also Upper Mantlins) because of the predominance in them of Lepidula, Ferraris and Stromatopora. In this event beds 3-6 should be the equivalent of the New Zealand, Beeroff and Stimpson. The only difficulty in this correlation is that in Barke all the divisions are much thicker than those of New York, 2000 feet in the former against probably less than 500 feet in the latter area. The lithic nature of the beds in both areas is fairly alike and no difference in thickness can be ascribed to this cause. The Heldentayian of New York, Tennessee at the southwest have or many species not seen here in Barke that I am coming to the view that there is a migration from the south as well as one from the north-east. In the way of working out details of migrations much remains to be done. Mrs Binns and Kirkham of Montreal (in Quibbs by stry) are staying at the bars for a few days-.

Grand Breve Aug 17 - Thursday. Spend the day along the sea cliffs at Rosie Cove. Fossils are neither abundant nor good in Beds 1 and 2 of Logans section. The guide fossil is Byspidula galata and some of its associates are Strophonella punctilipa, Leptaena rhomboidalis, Atrypa reticularis. Favosites and cup corals apparently the same as at Dalhousie and Strometown. Most of the Pelecypoda are from Bed 2. In some ways this fauna reminds of Dalhousie but it is rather odd that here the common shell for 3 these beds is absent.. Then the Byspidula here is galata while at Dalhousie it is the pseudogalata associated with Leptaenica concern. If the Rosie's cove beds 1 and 2 are the equivalent of the lower part of the Dalhousie section than bed 3 which is unfossiliferous here must be the equivalent of the higher Dalhousie beds. However in what way one turns to make

It seems to me that Dalhousie and Gaspe are in two [illegible] rather distance from the shore of Laurentia though but with inter communication, in this condition that makes the two areas or land to correlate. Then for this northeastern area must have undergone movements during the deposition of the Devonian which is clearly indicated by the abrupt change from a limestone to a coarse sandstone with light colored shale gives in the Gaspe series. At Basin Cove the Gaspe limestones are less than a half mile (south) from an exposure of vertical shales, red and black with bands of sandstone- probably of Ordovician age. There seems to be no chance here for beds of Silurian age and yet such are present only 40 miles to the west at Anticosti. They are also present to the NE as Portland. Gaspe gives a series of flint shales with thin bands of impure limestone, The shales predominate. Resemble the Dalhousie beds but

here there is more limestones. Baspe gone 2 above the fault begins with the same kind of beds as those of gone 1. In fact they are the same beds continued on these gon gradually into a soft shale series bluish- green with purple goes. These shales are of gone 3, a soft series easily weathered away, but of considerable thickness. Not a trace of fossil in them. Gone 4 is again a limestone reminding of a rotulime stone as at Buffalo N.Y. The only prints are crawling worm trunks and a small Conularia which fails to get. Also like this: [sketch of triangle]

Grand Brere Aug 18 Friday D2068 Mr Daniel Gare showed me a bed of fossils in the woods of his farm and it formed like the typical Ordovician horizon, the same one Clarke and I found five years ago at a lower level in the topography beside the small brook. Cracked rock are showing and reveal a good lot of material. The commonest species is Rhynchonella harandi. Other common forms are Spirifer crurichioni, Pholidomella musculosa, Hoffeningya procerinus (rare), Rineselaria (a large lenticular form), Ariculopsetta (many of these are one form by a thick hygrogram), etc. In other closely adjoining layers found new Spirifer armatus, Meristella, Codolpina con- cara This layer is not far above the hard clay near the top. I guess and I estimate this goes like several hundred feet below the beds on Davis Beach in them angles the true Ordovician horizon is several hundred & below the top of the (at least not less than 400 to 600 feet)

[D 2542] Grand Breve formation. In the afternoon searched the hills along the 'Portage' through the corral to the cliffs. Saw no fossils in the cliffs which I judge to be Lygaeo grapt. On the hills on both sides of the Portage saw almost no fossils but did find Lep. concharia and a Odmunicl? taut. This is June 6. Later examined more closely the position of the Rhyne, hamandei beds and found them to be in the yellow thin bedded limestone which usually agrees as the Chonite came down, beds are one foot thick. In the brook where we collected this Chonite it is not more than 20 feet thick; the hamandei beds are probably not less than 20 feet. These beds of a whitish and more crystalline nature with its large fossils are probably not less than 20 feet thick. Later. This Crystallany zone is clearly in mor? and probably some distance from the top. See Skiffs field remarks.

Grand Greve Aug 19 Saturday Hired Mr. Isaac's brother as a guide to Cape Bon Ami. Walked down the trail to a place called George's Cove and then by foot path of the stream to the top of the cliffs. Over the edge of the cliff is a sort of gulch an inclined plane was built to take of nature. Along this one climbs down to the Cape where there is quite a shelf and when they were stood a house. From this great level level we can descend to the beach in either di- rection. Walked along the beach towards the "portage" to note though another of birds & but saw not one of a frond beyond some rusty divines marvellous dust off of plants. On the top of the Cape picked of me found either a coral or a bogrom epitheria. Cauda-galli were also seen. From Cape Bon Ami down to Ship Head from 5, 6 and 7 miles of the cliffs. The strata lie in shallow undulations with a tendency for bed 5 to disappear beneath the surface.

Monday. Put in the morning along the beach below the Methodist church about one mile from Bar's house towards Ship's Head. Clarke and I collected here five years ago. Record a number of Rhynchonella pleiopleura associated with Rissellaria and Chrestella. This horizon is in the midst of the Eatonica peculiaris beds and I should think is near the middle of the Grand Sacre formation. Here also occurs large Asterifera unica. This species is distinct from

arenea in the max promonal sinus mist its nearly obsolete implications, Could get no good specimens. They are little thin from James Bay only again as large. I have no doubt that this Spirifra unicus of the Grand Bere formation spread of the St. Lawrence and across Laurentia to the James Bay country and possibly from there through Ontario into eastern New York, in by any of the Connecti- cut troughs. As once one sees of this Grand Bere fauna the once one is convinced that it contains practically the New York Ordinary and Oondyca faunas. This communication must have been of the St-Lawrence embayment and down the Connecticut trough or by some way across and around Ontario into the Gulf Interior sea. In the afternoon collected on the "Guerin Reef" on the eastward side of the Cape Breton road. The design is the same as that of "Barrs Roads" locality. This is the true

Upper Oriskany horizon - is a white crystalline beautifull limestone of not less than 20 feet thicknes. This zone has very little chert but most of the fossils written out somewhat as siliceous pean- domaths. In the upper most beds large conusely pliedid spirifer crenensis and Coelospirin encara, are the common fossils. Also P. musculorum, my large Eatmia and less commonly Furostella emargin Towards the bottom of these horghets occur the A. barandei and Sp. murchisoni of which I collects a quantity in bars swords. Below these beds chert becomes abundant for about ten feet and here are common Chonites crenensis, Lestotophin etc. Farther down come in the softer thin bedded yellowish limestones without flint but in places written into a whitish mass looking like decomposed flints. After getting on the Cape Romain road and looking back to the

all of the Grand [illegible] formation. The hills are thus disposed:- Oyster Point S. C. Concava P. foveosulca S. cune dentata There is a very narrow band of beds of this kind. Framing Cape Raine Road The land rises here again into the high sea cliffs as high as the Grand [illegible] hills. These sea cliffs have beds not far which I collected open deep cup Coelospermum Concava and a type of Delmanites. I rather think that this deeper Oolite any limestone lies once down in one probably below the second layer seen on the level at Ship Head. In other words close to the Leptocidella flabellata (very large speci- mens) beds with Michelinia and Ostreacidae.

Grand River Aug 22 Tuesday. Collected all morning on the farm above the road of the Grand River postmaster. The rocks are very much decomposed here and the fossils occur as casts. Catmia in great quantity, deemed a gay slot and a bag of entire specimens. Physis- domella, Meristella the other common fossils. This horizon is about that of the Lehuquet beds. Packed my fossils this afternoon. Two handls and one box of the Baske (Postage road) One handl has some fresh and hard ones Rainy ones material material. The other various like in the Catmia slot, The box has Baske's Rainy sandstone fossils. After thralling over the various fossils collected at Dalhousie, Pierce at Baske conclude that Baske beds 1 and 2 are about of the age of the New York Creemans. The Dalhousie beds are probably the equivalent of the Baske beds nos 3, 4 and 5. The Dalhousie hypidula beds are to be compared with the N.J. Beeroft or that the beds under Mr. Sturwats farm are of about Kingston but for totally different faunal facies, Pierce rock is undoubtedly the equivalent

"[illegible]" and the Cope Barre beds may then be confused with no. It seems that the various beds are more frill forms, further away from the Laurentian shore and this is particular- ly true of Barre beds 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 as may be seen in the Dalhousie ad Pierce localities. If the Black Cope rocks near Mr. Richmond bear out this idea then should be interesting devlopments there. It is said to have a long section from Silurian into Devonian and this seems the true so far as I could see for the strata when we came up to Barre. Of the Barre ad Pierce anticlines the latter is certainly the greater elevation in bringing to the surface the considerable elevation a part mass of Ordovician rocks. Then again the great crushing and faulting bears out this view. It seems to have suffered more erosion than the Barre anticline join to the Bonaventure formation as the ridge today and its part mass of Bon- aventure rocks is no higher than the Barre

range. The Mt. Joli beds at Percé certainly belong some- where in the Dalhousie series. This is shown by the occurrence of the same Favositæ, Jafkrents, Shemards and the common Dalhousie Spirifera. Then again the Fucoidal markings resemble the same things associated with Canda-falli in the beds at Basse from 3 to 7.

Grand Sere Aug 23 - Wednesday This morning my two hands and one bry of posses were taken and fast aboard Sarks end fishing boat. At ten o'clock we left the shal and after a short calm space about Little Sarpe was rapidly Horn into Sarpe Basin where we arrived at 12.45. Bote letters after dinner and set around until [4 A.M] when I went aboard the Lady Eileen for Port Daniel. The steamship was reported would be in between 12 and 1 but it does not until 4 in the morning when we went aboard the Eileen. He left Sarpe after 5. Aug 24 Thursday. Slept about 2 hours when got up to see Peace for the last time. Just at 8 A.M we are of the moat and the day is a dark one. The outdued light brings out the red

2849 colors far stronger than in a bright day. Arrived at Port Daniel at 2 P.M. with a stormy sea m. Put up at Le Grand Hotel run by a Jersey-man by the name of Le Grand. Later walked down along the coast of the bay towards the steamers craft. Just beyond the bridge over the estuary of Middle River in nearly vertical strata is bed of corals practically a reef. Here Eridophyllum (two species one with small corallites the other with very large ones) are very common. Other corals are Halysites, Favosites, Heliolites and shells I noticed Rhynchotrema cuneatum, Leiochlamis? and other species. The rock however is somewhat metamorphosed due to the immense squeezing on it that fossils do not weather out well. A little beyond on the track appears a red very coarse conglomerate marked on the map as Lomix which to me appears to be the Bauriavus conglomerates. It is unconformable to the Silurian and agrees best with the Bauriavus conditions. Beyond these conglomerates at St. a l'Enfer

appear mac kilurian limestone. Here the fossils are scarce but saw a large celled Fa- orities and a few other things. See the space Dr. Sgt D Pat Daniels section.

Port Daniel Aug 20 Friday. Walked this morning to Once a la Barte about five miles east along the coast. Spent a few hours along the shore as far as I could get around and then enjoyed a man with a 'flat' to take me further along the shore towards Port Daniel. He owned one about 1/2 miles. Saw quite a thickness of Silurian strata, a succession of coal goes with almost interminable laminae. Throughout there are always some coals but generally are or scatters as to make no limestones. When the coals are pure limestone results with considerable grindel matter. Let 2 In the soft grey slates on each side of the head of Once a la Barte and westward beyond the stream interesting cephalopods occur. Orthoceras Simplicius, Phragmoceras, Cyrtoceras and another diffly pluted benth forms are the prevailing forms. All are rare. Let 2a In none of the beds did I see a single Breckisford.

Corals are the predominating fossils, Astro. me?rina most abundant sometimes in masses of To 30 inches in diameter. A large celled Favos. site also forms quite large and in one place makes a reef but draws none of the other ani- mals associated on a true reef. Eridophyllum is probably the commonest true coral and makes columnus beds often several feet thick, Helio- lites the most widely distributed throughout the bed which is also true of Stromatopora. Haly. site quite common at times and in places may be nearly 2 feet in diameter. Cladophora generally rare. Cup corals practically absent. As a rule the beds are a grey-green hard shale with zones of thin bandel areas nears limestone. The shales are sometimes variegated with red and then some zones either of shale or limestone may be a dull brick red. In one place saw the Conarotwo lying in fairly distinct beds upon the nearly vertical Silurian beds. An angular unconformity

A sketch is about as follows:- 460 ft. rrough height 400 ft. rrough height. between 50 foot high Bonaverture red conglomerate Silurian Silurian sea level Port Daniel Aug 26 Saturday Walked out to Anse a la Barbe where there had a "flat" taken me along the shore to Anse au Basom. The shore soon after rounding the point of Anse a la Barbe is or very rocky that one made her two stops. The first stop was in the third due limestone and shale series having many corals of which

(Zt no 3) I collected some. The next step began to introduce the very heavy bedded motled red limestone found all along the shore. These are Bascon where a shale series begins and continues to near Pt aux Boisany, just before reaching this pt, the Carbonic fossils crypto- morpha is again present. Climbed off the high rise to the south-west (through continuous to Amadala la Rive) of Anse au Bascon, and after a long search was rewarded with some brachiopods. It seems that the unweathered limestone when broken newly reveals a good fossil but much weathered pieces that could well under the summer dry yield fossil specimens. My collection is very small. The only way to make a large collection will be to take a months time in searching the entire mountain zone for the right kind of rock with fossils. The beds seem to be in nests. There are some cards in these nests but as a rule are very scarce. On a fresh fracture the rock looks much like Tennessee marl, I saw quite a lot of more Pelespods are seen, Forbis Lot No 4.

In the higher node there are purple and green streaks along the track. of these are fascicled a few ends are seen a pair of which deflected and have left together. About half way to PT amp Boeang noticed a surface with many crushed Conchidium on knipts. Took one specimen. In the same region are seen many surfaces with good Canda-folli. The animal that formed them marking did so fairly in one plane but often made several starts in completing the circle. Usually there is not more than one link for circle and in all cases the outermost cich in the last bunch with the ends terminating in the slight elevated opening. One fine specimen was as follows :-

These humors plainly show that the burning was done to provide a logan hole as the humors are ever merging in sweep and that the habitation hole is in the paring. The paelling should therefore be towards the center. The question arises did one animal make these conformed, circular, circular corks-tails. From the fact that most of the impressions consist of one or two holes I rather think that there where done in the previous page was made by a colony of six individuals. A hunting through one of these specimens one sees that these jars are all separate and on one another but that thin is but one thickness. The lithologic character of these holes including the can-do-palli and an the hummor as it is seen at Mt. Joli that there is not in the prints we would say, are identical beds. The prints known are totally different in these beds are those of Mt. Joli.

I had no time today to follow up the shore to the Pre Cambrian strata which continue for another four miles according to the map. The last of the shale series is now, near the Carboniferous conglomerate, stood about vertical but their line of strike was nearly that of the trend of the shore. Just what comes in in these higher beds I do not know but as yet I have seen no transition beds to the Skeldubyian on any fossils conformable to those of Mt. Joli n of Quebec. The fisherman that helped me yesterday is Ensigne Anglehart, Anse a la torte. He cannot write but this name was given me by his wife.

Port Daniel Aug 27 Sunday. Saludig section of the cliffs from Anse au Basen to the west end of Port Daniel as seen from the road to Pointe du depart a Port Daniel. Anse au Basen, Phaliphala, Port Point [illegible] Anse au Basen Anse a la Barbe. [illegible] [illegible] Anse au Basen.

Port Daniel Aug 27 Sunday: After breakfast walked over to First Point the other side of Port Daniel bay. The rocks here look much like those seen about once or bacon but then appear to be more limestone horizons. One gne is made of of broken reef ends just as if a big reef was nearby and this material had fallen down into the present location before solidation. Another limestone gne is made of 2 finely thin bands separates by thin bands of shale. Red and green are the prevailing colors in the whole gneiss. Almost at the Point and but a short distance north of the tree, about coral limestone spicled of a flat grit with many valves of a Memmorella. This very suggestive genus indicates that the First Point beds are about the horizon of the reef itself. In going back to Port Daniel drew the section on the previous two pages.

Had to pass my large box this afternoon as the boat is here to -monus morning about 7. I heard from a mechanic late this afternoon that farther around Great Point than I got this morning that "fine shell" occurs as good as any I have. This may be an important clue for Wal- lause points but I fear has no such value. The geologist of gov gives a point locality at Indian Point fully two miles east of Great Point. On the steamer the next morning I noticed that the limestone seen on West Point continues west nearly as far as we arrived at Ellis's camp. From the steamer their color (redish) and general character seems to be that of the Chalco limestone seen at Chase an Basem. The strike of these beds is that of the shore the reason why no other beds came, just before coming to the Carib. conglomerate a short distance of stale appears also belonging to the Silurian. It seems that all the low lying land has a bed Carb. conglomerate from P. Daniel to Bleach Cope. Of course at Pierce it lies as much as 1200 feet above the tide,

New Richmond Aug 28 Monday. Had to get up in a hurry this morning and get aboard the steamer at 6.30. The morning air is cold. In our hurry we could not take along the box which Mr. Le Grand promised he would ship the next trip. Arrived at New Richmond about noon. Has taken to the Cascopecia House run by Mr. James Robinson, P.O. address Little Casca- pedia, Prov. Quebec. Is a hotel for fishu- men and gun crews. Or for sportsmen. After dinner started out with a crew and a canoe for Black Cope. After paddling in a mile and a half found the sea a little too choppy for the canoe so ported in to shore at the laging of the Dalenian exposures. In a few minutes began to see fish but as large Aggrybonds and a shell for they [illegible] (latter I see it = St. germaine) mir are masses turned out of head, I see how these stocks could be Dalenian. Don't know the Spirifus turned out to be the [illegible] andinica scotienais Bellisj.

and for very large size associated with two species of Halysites and other Silurian corals it began to be plain that the horizon here is partially in the Guelph. Associated are large Plate Pentamerus (Pentaceras? oblongum) a smaller pentamerid partially a byssulula, A. reticularis, Lob. shemtrida and two other species of brachiopods. Some of the fossils are fine having suffered much from compression and as the rock is often very hard we think not very poorly. Some of the corals weather out fairly crude. New Richmond Aug 29 Tuesday. Started in on the Silurian section of yesterday. Found that had begun at the best end of the section as the fossils after the Stricklandia beds are far and far between and not very good outside of the corals. Made a reconnaissance of the entire section down to the Cape but saw

"Nothing particularly striking. Hoped the section would go up into the Helikian but this is apparently out of the question. Paddled to the hotel and finally had to get out and crawl through the eel grass and muck. Back to the hotel at 7 P.M. New Richmond Aug 30 Wednesday. Had a buggy this morning and drove at once to Red Cope. Found the Romerstown hardy shale to pass beneath into the character- istic conglomerate. The lower beds had jumbles of rocks that seem not familiar order. Then a conglomerate of Silurian material largely made up of corals as Stromatopora, Helispora [have a large sample], Syringospora; with many pieces of red crinoidal limestone. The next lower bed was almost entirely made up of the Black Cope Dolomite. These Devonian conglomerates but against the dolerite with the filling.

structure : (A later movement resulting in a huddle). Black Cafe Oolite. Boveavertine conglomerate. Nearly horizontal are the way to Boreavertine The following is a rough draft of the succession of the rocks without relation to thickness. The section diagnostic is continuous for at least 1/2 miles. The dip varies between 40 and 70 degrees and less than one half of the beds are about half across the strike while the further half is almost transverse to the strike. The thickness therefore peaks. Bying at the base the final succession is as follows : (From Little Caspedia to Black Rock.) A series of thin bedded finely limestone and shales with thick landinia and corals. Probably 100 two feet thick. Fossils Lot 1. A blue shale series weathering to brick red, has a few broods. Probably less than 100 feet. Fossils Lot 2, A lime shale weathering black and red with some

Memorina lilia frond., Lot 3. Thin ledged shelly limestone with fossils mainly brachiopods and gastropods. On account of the peculiar breathing of the rocks I have called them "pic- turesque reefs". Henri photo, French print, that limestones with Corals near Big Point just beyond Picturesque reefs. Lot 5. This print is probably less than 1/4 of the section and from here upwards may be all the beds are of scale. Variegated scales with zones of semi-encrusted muds. But few fossils. A first thickness. Yellow, sandy soft shales just above the first turtle. Does a few fossils. See them. A small Atypus reticulatus and a Verruca new frithieri, or I. cordata. Lot 6 Greenish shales with corals just below the first turtle. See specimen. Lot 7 Canda-falli shells. Once variegated shales with here and there with coral. Standards of 1st thickness.

About 3/4 down the section in the holes are their kids of a red erinoid limestone with curds (= [illegible] Crystalocrinus). and stems of the Scotland crinoid. Gone about or put third. Have a few curds. A green and red shale series with Lependitis and gones of curds. Also seen crooked round bits. due the Lependitias. Mine and a purple shales with circles of calcite crystals. Just below seems terrible, thus only then goes of curds at semi-crooked round bits. Many hundred put third. About five foot of limestone conglomerate with Lepen- ditia and small brachs, due list (10) Black Cope dolerite. Bonaventure conglomerate. The geological proof of Ellis' gives Devonian on each side of the Silurian. I could find no Devonian at Red Cope and then there is none in the low land of the Little Cascapedia. Here I saw Bonaventure conglomerate in loose pieces and it is possible that there have

suggests the presence of Devonian here. In reading Elles crop notes one gets the idea that his Devonian of the Case species are the gray conglomerates as seen today at Red Cape. To me they are however nothing more than that as I see of the Bmarantium. Further I saw no uncompravity between the gray and red conglomerates - both one of one series and are comparable all successive. Elles writes of an abundance of corals and brachiopods. It is true that the corals are abundant but they are rolled over out of the Diluvian rocks. This could be best seen in the Stromatoporas all of which were rolled fragments. The mere fact that these Diluvian corals are so abundant as one gives is no more difficult to explain than that of the brown green shell is made of rolled pieces of the chert. The succession in a dark or greenish Hassel conglomerate followed by a gray living one and then the red Bmarantium conglomerates. Now that I have seen the Diluvian of Port Daniel, Black Cape and Ariswig I cannot

help concluding that these areas are totally geologically and lithically from that of Anticosti. In the latter area the formations are fertile and the thickness of the beds is more than one-quarter that of Quebec, in Nova Scotia. Further proof of this is to be had from the fact that about Cape Breton the Silurian rests directly on Ordovician strata, while about Port Daniel, Black Cape and Arroy there is an immense Silurian section beneath the Silurian all above the Ordovician. Again Anticosti lies to the north of the Appalachian folding while those mentioned above lie to the south east of the same mountain masses. The Ordovician of the St. Lawrence embayment is also widely different from that of the south. These differences must go with a series of folding connected with the Appa- lachians and my "Leas and barriers".

New Richmond Aug 31-1905 Thursday. Packed two boxes of fruits in the morning. The assistant had hears the name of Poppleton Bois, Little Cascoedia, P.Q. Canoeist and huntsmans guide of the Cascoedia rivers. I wrote to Prof J Dalhousie told me that at St Annnes this Mr. Joe Kenzie or Charles Brown could help me to the first locality. The plant locality is just off the lake from the ferry landing. Here on Sept Morton. Doctor Tuttle of New York City told me the best boating place on the south-west coast of Newfoundland and is at Bay St. George. He also added that the Blackflies and mosquitoes are very very bad. So bad that he could not go after Moose. Left New Richmond at 7.30 P.M. and arrived at Dalhousie at 11 P.M. Stopping at Murphy House.

2851 New Brunswick Dalhousie, Sep 1 - Friday. At 7.30 took the ferry across the bay, a good three miles, to Miguasha P.O., one of the points in Baie-Comeau Bay. Going out a of the bay one sees a low low cliff of Devonian Hilm with the red Camavertus high above. The lowest stratum seen here is a coarse conglomerate followed by series of light green or blue shales with occasional lenses of sandstone. About 3/4 mile east of the mouth in shale-gypsum concretions one finds the fishes and a thin shale zone between beds of sandstone is replete with fragments and some entire Orthoceras. Also found some Ostrodoca like fish. All in all had unexpected re- sults. Made arrangements with Mr. James Butler and Anthony Splound both of Miguasha post office P.O. Duché to collect fishes for one at from 25 to 50 cents each. Both promised to do so.

"Just a little beyond (above) the Miguasha way appears a zone of conglomerate with the more rounded pebbles hardly cemented together in the grey sand. Of this zone about ten feet can be seen. The pebbles are of granite, schist, gneiss, shale and limestone, the latter look more like Trenton than of higher formations. Then follows sandy shales for ten feet of a light blue color or rathering to a light grey. This is followed by a blue shale or-athering down into small flakes. In these shales are found thin seams of gypsum in small lenses. The mossases the joints are associated with the gypsum in flat nodules. Bothirlepis not common. This zone may be 100 feet thick. On these shales follows thin bedded sandstone with beds of shale together having a thickness of about 20 feet. Fossils occur in the sandstone but one peculiar zone is in the shale at the junction with a sandstone. As a rule here the bones are separated by an excellent matrix; this goes to their abundance. specimens are quarried for here. Have a slot of a

and fa lighter blue grn Above the sandstone is one shale, inside, in which the fites are once ore. This grpe may aloste 100 fut thick. These shales are also seen to good advantage to the east of Migwasha creek beneath James Butler house where fprules of them fites. Above these shales come in sandstones of a red cln like that of the Bmarctine. These are also of Oerman grs and one their cln to stamng derivit from the Bmarctine and mertie. Between is a good grate longj. The Bmarctine near James Butlers house is a coarse conglomerate and lies unc impropertly upon ad against the Oerman. This can here be seen to good advantage as the Oerman presents here a cliff as follows: Og Red Grs Sandstone Higher Der. Shales once once fites. Bmarctine Oerm.

Dalkousie Saturday Sep. 2. Spent the morning on the shore of Beaumenac Bay to the east of the Obignatha oray beneath the farm of James Butler. Found three fishes and one large scale. Then walked to the west beyond Flumart Point to see the Devonian beds. There is not much of an exposure here and no good fishes were seen but fragments of Bothriolepis. The Bmarantine conglomerate again caps this Devonian and has Lillurian limestone in it sometimes a several feet in diameter. Not of the hard knotty kind as that seen at the "Pic- turesque rocks" at Black Cape. There is also considerable debris in it. I can see no reason why the Bmarantine should be of Lower Carboniferous age, if we as the relations in Quebec go it may be of any age. Its age must be proven by fossils or by other beds coming in between these Devonian and Bmarantine beds.

Dalthousie Sunday Sep, 3 Mr H O Hill and Ogare are on an Indian ax dug of 2 fat hearts the ground on Moosequit Lake on the boundary line between Restigouche and Northumberland counties New Brunswick. In the afternoon gave me a good gift from Laurence considerably broken but which can be repaired. Visited with the Stewarts and had tea with them.

Dalhousie Monday Sep. 24. Packed the two loads of pine in the morning and then assembled the boxes, Pierce, Port Daniel and New Richmond boxes at the railway station. Mr. Stewart will bring the fire from Bellevue tomorrow so that the three barrels and 12 boxes will go together. Paid $2.17 freight on boxes and barrels shipped from Boxke, Pierce, Port Daniel and New Richmond. Paid $2.00 to Stewart for the hauling of boxes from Bellevue and from steamers way to depot.

"Dalhousie Sep. 5 - Tuesday. Left the Hotel at 9 A.M., at the depot met Mr. Stewart unloading the fire boxes left at his farm. Mrs all in together at the Dalhousie station and I have my receipt for them. The Ocean Limited at the Junction is 30 minutes late. Changed cars at Moncton. Arrived at St. John, N.B., about six P.M. St. John Sep. 6 - Wednesday. It's raining again today and having rheumatism did no more than go twice to the "reversing falls"; in the morning to see the water running out and in the afternoon at high tide to see it running up the St. John river. Tasting Thialim and eating almost no meats today.

St. John Sep. 7 - Thursday lost up at 5.45 to take the 6.45 train in Boston.

Ready are the other material from the Burnt Hill on the other side of Cape Rosie road. Spirea cavernosa with Lep. Lemeara n.t. R. barandei certainly below followed still lower by the Clinets canadiens beds.
