Embroidered screen 1721 Birds, outs at rates $13.50 Seems choice. Black tock ground. Emb. golden yellow green horn and white. Green frame carved. Another data at stands 1666 + 67-18 Black tock ground. Birds at water white 26 birds. The frame has two corroded panels. Another 28816 + 75. Oct 15-1903 London. Thursday. Called at the Brit Museum and gave some books to Bather to have them powdered with the grounds to Damm. Asked about Cyctid Melange. Bather said for desirable Manlius species he would let us have 1 or 2 Atelregatus, 1 Pseudocrimite bifasciatus, 1 P. qua- drifasciatus I said would send some of the rarer species and Indian Tm. C.anigericus. Then was introduced to Mr. Herborne. See the Cat. of Nat. Hist. books just published by the Brit. Mus. Nat. Hist. gives much information about dates etc. Then called on Buckman. Asked to take the large Pantlinemia directus for five pounds provides he would add about six smaller specimens showing development. Drill ship direct

to America. Also the Jurassic ends. He is to be on the look out for Jurassic Bygon. Also asked for the second last series of Jurassic Archaeopteryx and a series of about 50 specimens to illustrate Aptornis Ornithidae. Then met Vaughan and remained with him until 10.30 P.M. Oct 16, Friday London. Spent the day being London about St Pauls, The Tower London Bridge and later to Buckingham Palace. Wrote postcards in the evening.

Oct 17 Saturday London Spent the morning in seeing the splendid Zoological Garden of London. The collec- tion is a large one and all the buildings and grounds are quite kept and clean. The buildings are not elaborate in their archi- tecture nor in the building matter but as a rule the animals have plenty of room. It's only the small animals and the parrots that are confined to small rooms. The apes have an abundance of room in the district of cages and are separated from the public by a front of glass. Their only connection with man is with the Keeper. The wonderful human charac- teristics of the Chimpanzee interests me greatly. Had lunch in the garden and then to the Natural History Museum to get any check which had arrived that day

before. Then to Parsons to look of por- traits for Merrill but found nothing. Sherborne will be good man to look up portraits and chiropaths for Merrill as he knows everyone. Spent the evening including dinner with Dr. and Mrs. A. Smith Woodward. Talked about many men and museums. He does not believe in Balarts Trenton fishes. Will come to the St. Louis Exposition next year.

Oct 18 Sunday London. In the morning visited White- Chapel and saw some of the sights of the poorer quarters. In the afternoon to the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery! Oct 19 Monday L- Liverpool Visited the British Museum for an down and purchased an umbrella, went to hotel to pay my bill and to the London and North Western (Euston Station) for 12.15 train. The distance to Liverpool is 202 miles and we arrived here at 4.45 or in 4 1/2 hours. Five stops were made. Out of our railroad hotel a North

'Western' Oct 20 Tuesday Liverpool Liverpool Free Museum. Cases in Geology Dept of brass, solid frames and the glass frames secured in therefore great difficulty to open. Frames very narrow and therefore the entire case made all glass. Fossil Invertebrate collection small, in table cases. Mounted on paper covered corrugated tiles (Archyars). Labeling inadequate. The museum is undergoing radical transformation in all lines. One room devoted to classification. First a case dividing all matter into organic and inorganic. Then cases to the Chordata, and others to the div, of the Mammalia

Tf of pedestals of mammalia sanded, margin painted flored. Effect good. Shelves in mammal cases of glass with the edges ground and polished, held by a wire frame going to the four corners of cases, Thus Man and horse skeletons also here, Showing one half has a skin to show relation bones to skin. Big stump of roots of Lipillaria dere. About 3 feet in diameter. Each root bifurcates but once. All of these roots are marked by leaf scars. From the roof of the Oregon & ft coal mine. Many recent mollusca show liery love in small white cancers. Some cancers are bast. Mounted on glass and shown ver- tically. Tallet held in place by a wire frame going all around the shelf, Thus

"A small case devoted to Nassa. Showing the relation of Dr. hista to forty named forms. They are arranged in lines and the same applied to each other. Then visited the Art Gallery and the Fall Exhibition. An immense number of pictures for sale and many for reasonable figures. As it again rains all day re- mained in the hotel after 5 P.M. I have now been in England for nearly three weeks and I cannot say that I would come to live here. The large cities are too much con- gested, the people uninteresting from the picturesque standpoint, the atmos- pheere is very much hazy due to the

turning of dirt and the cities are dirty. The people of Liverpool I do not like at all as there are many neglected, poor and drunken ones. The smaller cities are far more interesting. In the way of municipal adminis- tration America has little to learn from England along the fundamental directives in the area of museums they are far ahead of us and this is particularly true of London.

Oct 21 - Liverpool. The day opens without rain but the smoke of the city is so thick that one sees little of a clear sun. Walled around a little and town to the hotel to make my de- parture for the ship. Left the dock at 2.20 P.M. As we go out the Cedric and Southland put in to take on passen- gers. My room mate is a young doctor Mr. May of Northam Ormesby. Oct 22 Irish Sea etc This morning at 10 A.M. we go into Queenstown harbor in the southeastern Irish coast. At so. 40 we leave and pass the Cedric coming in. There is considerable sea and very rough and then the same as

It comes out of the water chalks the entire ship. Oct 23 Friday, At sea, as in the room all day half well. Strong winds all day, Oct 24 Saturday Remained all day in the room after lunch, walk on deck just before breakfast. Wind blew stronger than we first saw the north and finally from the south. In the evening the ship is going very badly pitching and rolling. Oct 25 Sunday, Very bad night due to the ship rolling and pitching more than any of my summer experiences. This morning I am

sea sick although not at my sto- macx. Remained in the room all day. Oct 26 Monday. Again in my room all day, The sea has calmed down considerably this afternoon though there is still a big swell on. Oct 27 Tuesday Another weary day beginning with fog and some wind and though sea, Later it changed to more wind, sea and rain. Was on deck several times but did not stay long. Read Macaulay essays most of the days.

Oct 28 Wednesday A bright morning with local showers in the afternoon and evening. Just about getting used to the sea. Oct 29 Thursday A cold raw day with much wind. The ship leans considerably in the morning. Start date to have my meals in the dining room. The room steward Mr. Gimmer brings them to my room and leaves. Oct 30 Friday, Bright morning day, About 6 A.M. a steamer passes us. In the after- oon one of the French steamers left for New York. Later the Etruria

Oct 31- 1903 Saturday We are having the first bright day of the trip and of course I am in deeth all day and go to the dining room for my meals. At 12.15 ship's time we pass Nantucket Shoals Light Ship. Some day we should be at Philadelphia tomorrow afternoon between 2 and 4 P.M. from Queenstown Our daily record in miles is 260, 305, 260, 279, 308, 281, 311, 256, 321, This is always from noon to noon. Total from Queenstown 2581. To go 2830 miles. Or we should be at the entrance to the Delaware at 6 A.M. It is then 90 miles to Philadelphia or we should be then at 2 P.M. tomorrow.

Nov. 1 - 1903 Sunday In America, Delaware Bay. This morning at 8 we are at the cape, the Ora Falls Light ship and three on one pilot, At about 1 P.M. we are detained 20 minutes by the Health Officer. The day is a perfect one and the atmosphere hazy. No need for an overcoat now the first time in many months. Save the room steward $5.00 and the table waiter $2.00 Arrived at the craft at Philadelphia at 5 P.M. It was just 6 P.M. when left through the Customs examination. Left Phil. for Washington at 7.15. Arrived H. James Hotel at 11. P.M.

St Louis trip of June 1904. Left Washington on C. & O. at 2.30 P.M. of June 4 and arrived at St. Louis 1.30 hours late or at 8.10- P.M. of June 5th. Took rooms for the night at Hotel Beers. June 6 Tried to get in the Inside Inn but found conditions too crowded. Returned to Hotel Beers and took a room for 10 days at @ $2.00 June 6 - 1904 Imperial Japan (Mr. T. Chada's collection of several hundred animal specimens! Onel shown in thick walled paper trays. The specimens are all good but I noticed nothing very showy not with the Stibnite. In another place are the large specimens and here an show laye a few stibnites.

Collection of rocks very carefully trimmed and material excellent, Specimens all about 4x6 inches in thick walled paper trays. About 100 specimens. About 75 specimens of stoneware and porcelain clays. Both in the natural state and sometimes in the marked or bisque state. About 15 different finishes. About 60 specimens of whet-stones each tone nicely mounted and about 2x1x6 inches. Collection of fossils small but good. Begins with Carboniferous. About 70 specimen in systematic series and 15 large specimens. One very fine Pachy- docus naumanni, very large Bellulphus [illegible], from the Carboniferous. A good tooth of Elephas primi-genius, another Stegodon cliftii. The plants are all good of Mesozoic age as Jamitphyllum Nilssonia, and Chladophyletis.

"My Set". Of maps (petrograph) there are many and are all well mounted. 48 are mounted 2 in a frame and about 2 x 3 feet. I found one of the Empire about 5x5, 10 are mounted in 5 frames about 3x7 feet. I found orography map 5x5, 1 topographical map 5x5, 1 on a silk screen indicating the main mines 5x5 feet. One large frame with insets of maps from the principal ores (Dr. Bureau of Mines.) Arts and Crystals (22 specimens), many arsenic (2) and sulphur (12) from the principal mines. The two latter are shown in glass boxes of about 14x22 inches founded with nickel rods thus, 4 maps 4x4 feet showing distribution of silver, copper, sulphur and petroleum ores. Lignite samples (1), coal in another place (2) An- thracite (1) Aspholt (1), Petroleum- (3) Graphite (1), Sul- phur (3) Arsenic (1) Lead ore (2) Copper (5) Pyrite (6) Zinc (3) Chromium ore (1) Iron (1) Manganese (1) Bismuth (1) Silver (4) Gold (3) Antimony

(1) Antimony (1) Tin (1). These are all fair sized examples from 6 to 12 inches square. 1 large mass, 2 approx. 4 cubic inches of crystalline stibnite, one from Japan, the other from China. Stibnite: 2 fine crystals. Antimony crude as shown by Dr. Sunchara, Kogoro Antimony Mining Co., many refined cakes and ores from Ashio Mines, 2 large 18x15x10 inches. Also 7 other specimens from 3 other mines but are smaller specimens. [Fujiita & Co.] Of Kosaka Mining and Smelting Co.: very large ground ores ore shown, then large ore, gold and silver bullion, copper ingots, at 3 oz. of gold ore. Mitani Mining Co., Tokyo: 1 very large and 3 smaller lumps of coal from different coal mines. Pictures and maps. 19 sulphur ores and refined material with maps. 1 mine. Also large photo. 9 Copper, Lead and Silver Ores of the Onitaka Mining Co. with large photo of mine at works. A large and fine exhibit of the Britannia Refining Co., Tokyo of copper, silver,

"Oshika Bish Co." (sic) of copper, silver and iron with many excellent photos of mines. Fine wax model of the island coal mines of "Takashima Coal Mines;" Dr. Geological Survey Exhibit consists of 15 Crude Petroleum, tools and maps besides the things mentioned above. Models (topographic) 2x2 feet of the volcano Bandai before and after eruption. Very fine. A phonomic map with sample of soil. Not of our value terms. A large exhibit of coals 18x18 inches are photos of the colliery by the "Association of Colliery Owners of the Province of Chiba, Iwate and Oga." Good exhibit. The Mining Institute of Japan shows a case of gold washing and nuggets and 1 of uridos-marin. Very fine. Quite a large exhibit of the "Furu Kawa Mining Co." of Copper (Chalcopyrite) many large specimens, and many photos.

y Dratanabe Prof of Met. Imp. Univ. Teller in charge of geologic coll. has an instruction to send Badai's coll. but the ex- ception of one of the Co. all the material excepting four choice specimens can be dis- posed of. Therefore the joint seems to be exchange, as Dratanabe desires material for the Imperial University. Germany shows a series of geologic maps and sections of the country. These are very good. Also a geologic map of Europe. Lerold Commissioner for other maps for S.E. Africa and Ambra ? (Mexico) (also on elements). Three fine large blocks in west corridor of Main Building. Aug. 20th - Mexican Govt. Delays to private owner. July 7-1904.

(Mexico) (nothing labeled) Some large and good examples of copper ore - a breccia - from the Monteguma Copper Co. + large specimens and 4 bottles of crushed mat. In another case: 1 page or piece, 9 melted pieces and 4 bottles of reduced material. Much argentiforous material but as nothing is labeled one cannot say what is wanted. (Instituto Geologico Nacional) Geological Survey not yet installed. Has a general collection of rocks and minerals. "Cananea Consolidated Copper Co" "C.A." has a good exhibit of copper ores and some samples of copper, as gathered from the native copper sheets are desirable (from 3 feet square by ? inch thick. Consolidated (?) electric fans). Rather rather very desirable although some of the material may be deserted. But look here, The entire Mexican exhibit is in com- plete and adequately exhibited. Eduardo Martinez Baca chief of Mexico Mine Metallurgy Dep., will let us have material. See card J Baca.

Brazil Almost nothing labeled. Glass cancrinite toparz, Tourmaline aquamarine, amethyst crystals. Some of these are small having. A good collection of quartz crystals, many polished to their various kinds of inclusions. From large bags of fibrous asbestos removed from natural surroundings. Various pyramids of ores and many cases of ore samples but nothing is labeled. None of the material is striking in the way of mineral nature. Echitir primitive. Some large pieces of building materials. Col. Francisco de Souza Aguiar Com. Jerudl assistant leuthers in the afternoons. Will spare nearly all the specimens.

Argentine Republic Not yet unpaused as late as June 13th. One very large Rock of "Onix Verde" 9 x 4 x 2 ft. Has some large flaws. Another Rock 5 x 3 x 2 very fine marbling. Set under from Province San Luis. Another grey-goldwork Rock about 2 x 2 x 1 ft. Cuba Has a small collection of ores of man- ganese in asphalt, no all the rest nothing is labeled. Mineral Water Exhibit by A. Plake. Very extensive.

French Exhibit. Routes Scientifique, A. Paguin manufactures, 7 Bd. Lebastopol, Paris. Quite a number of circulars and heart shaped pads with sample are shown. Some of the pieces are as large as 3/4 inch. This is in the French Exhibit, against wall, next to Haiti exhibit and not far away from Dr. Pears exhibit. Mine are the seen in Manufactures Building, Avenue Victor Emile Baudot. Haiti A small collection of ores of tin, copper and silvera. Nothing of museum value. France (au Com. card.) There is here a very large (12x24 feet) map on which is hand painted the geolo- gy of the "Alpes Francaises". This is worth having. Also various publications. Also good exhibit of kirding slate by St. Silo- taux, Andoisieres Reunies de Rimogare, Ar- dennes. Another by Com. des Andoisiers d'Angers, Also autuning ores on a pavement.

Carborundum Co. One case will 'Electric Furnace Products.' Edward & Acheson exhibit 'Lumps of Graphite, Silicium, Carborundum' (2 jars) one grey fine with large crystals with blue-grey metallic lustre. One case of manufactured abraders. One pyramid case with five lumps of Carborundum as it comes from the furnace. The three are worth securing. Norton Emery Wheel Co. Alumina = artificial Corundum. A grey fine exhibit of the crystals as they come from the furnace (electric) at Niagara Falls. Also Corundum is shown in this case. This pyramid exhibit is in a case 10 ft high, 7ft wide and 3 feet deep. Glass all around. The entire case should be secured.

Wisconsin. A large mass of gneiss ore, from Empire Mine, Platteville, Wis. 3ft x 3 x 1. A good number of granite cubes about one foot square. Also sandstone and limestone. A small granite exhibit but nothing very distinctive. Best they a section of a ledge along some of strata 12x12 feet. Bedford and oslite A large cut stone exhibit. Not finished. No smaller exhibits. Large onyx exhibit in connection with Vermont Slate Co., 27 large slabs shown. Very great variety! Can't find out the name of the exhibitors. Later shown by the International Onyx and Marble Co., Denver, Colo. New Jersey Has a plaster restoration of Hadrosaurus. Attracts much attention before don't want it July 8-1904

July 8 - 1904 New York. A slab 35 x 10 ft of Climatichnite Oilcouni from, sharply cleave. Probably more than I show the elpyoto unmilled and marbling. Type of these are more than me for key. The effect of the slab has been destroyed by the lead- pig oil paint. Clevelands - Cliffs Iron Co 1 Munioing Michigan has a number of fine limonites (water formed), also a splendid model of the rocks at Marquette, Mich. made by Strome, 8 x 12 ft. also our only products yet of scientifically. Minnesota Has a fine exhibit of iron ores in large glass jars / Locality and analyses on red jar. Also for large model of Fayal Iron Mine. J. George Stevens Co. Building stone made of the nail. Vermont Marble Co. Proctor, VT. East outside corridor. Among other things there is a series of 32 samples of different marble slabs polished each about 12 x 18 inches. These

a smooth securing Georgia A good general exhibit but nothing here desirable for our museum unless it be a large matched slab of granite fines. The marbles are very prominent and finely matched. The slab is probably 12 feet square. Mississippi Very poor exhibit. A few building stones, some mined waters and much poor pottery. Idaho A large ore exhibit but no fine or large samples excepting argentiferous material. Nevada a good mass of undigested ore material whether good is not in the installation,

"Drashington Not yet installed. Ogym Quite a number of speal ore in the native state. Color not rich, some of these are desirable. A large collection of gold nuggets, Collection belonging to Frederick R. Mellis, Baker City Ogym; Lucard. Missouri Lee Ladd of Mining school. Not here now! Some large fine samples of Heminite in the form of "pipe ore". One of these is desirable! Donated by Missouri Stroll and Mine. Co., Chilton Carter Co. Great Calcite exhibit from Joplin. Part of the specimens donated by Hardhead Mine of Joplin Mo. Try also the Joplin Club" Another large case devoted to Dolomite and Chalcopyrite from "the Blackberry Mine Joplin Mo." A big celestite crystal after belonging to St. Joe Lead Co. Bonne Terre, Mo.

"A man of Ephalerite 2790 pounds, fine polish, Fine. A large and fine mass of galena in funnel shape about two feet square. Framed by Fisher Bros Outlivan. J.P. Graves, Capt., Doe Run Lead Co., San Francisco Co. has a fine collection, crystals and etc. One crystal pointed at bit into the foot plagi. South Dakota A regular ore exhibit. Nothing striking from museum standpoint. A fine model of the Black Hills by Shively, Exhibited by Association of Mining Men of the Black Hills. Com. Mr. Paddock. California Comission print to get a few or no of this material. See my can. In day and board and learn the 10. A large pyramid is built of Lepidolite a lithia ore. Many fine crystals. A nice lot of gold nuggets. One a shot about 6 inches in diameter. A very large chunk of gold quartz about 5 x 5 x 2 feet from Empire Mine, Grass Valley Nevada County at a depth of 2400 feet. Could use this. A fine large mass of orthoclastic diorite (Cornyte) from Dan Oligo. Louisiana Mainly Sulfur and Rock Salt in just quantity. Some Petroleum and Building stones. A fine relief geologic model of the state by Edwin F. Linnis 10x16ft. Com. Dr. W.G. Stubbs.

Cm. Dr. W. Oryma A general ore exhibit. One pedestal has 7 pieces of Canyon Diablo. Fryd Holtz has 60 to 70 tons and using the property. Luis at Canyon Diablo. Mr. Holtz gives dip then in the interest of the Gov. Fragments of this meteorite are found for 14 miles around the main mass. Some very fine silver ores, showing native ore silver. Colorado The finest state exhibit. A fine case of microcline or amazon stone from Pike Peak Region. A large circular table case with native gold shown by various mines. A very fine exhibit. Several good pyramids of copper, zinc lead and gold ores. Some of these may be desirable. A splendid case of fepite crystals. Rail made of 1/4 natural building stone on marble.

Mr. Creyter A poor exhibit, not yet installed. Alabama Distinguished by its iron casting of horse proportions of Vulcan modeled by C. Moretti. It must be a ship. Cast by Birmingham Steel & Iron Co. Kentucky A good exhibit of cobs, petroleum, building stone, lead and gine ore and clay. Texas A curious exhibit of laboratory cases with demons or thyls? which are said the souls are of Texas. Dr. Phillips will be in attendance the last two weeks of the Expo, bound to lead visitors to exchange. Opal granite with blue shine spoke too long attendant. Tennessee Space crowded, not once shown. Rotheny

remarkable. Crabs, Mussels, oysters and mackerel. Great Britain and Ireland. H.C.M. Eastern Com. A small table case has a fine exhibit of Cobalt and Nickel in the ore and commercial state. Shown by Rafael Isha Nickel and Cobalt Works, Swansea, South Wales. Tay to this. Private exhibit in Great Brit- tain space. Two small table cases with ore of copper, galena, coal etc from Rhodesia. Something may be of value but it does not look particularly inviting. Also a private exhibit. The Frosted Marble - a black marble filled with corals and other Calc., is shown by Starchip Co. du Cerval. Set the spot column. Private exhibit. The Dep. of Agriculture and Technical Instruction in Ireland shows a large

collection of 'Irish Building Stones'. The series in large in cubes and polished slabs of marble. Also crols, arch coat, and ores. Also slates. A good series, but one do not care for all as there is some duplication. Another marble series of slates 1x3 per slab by the Irish Marble Co. of Killarney, W.2. Dublin. Biological The India Survey shows a complete set of randomly found columns, and geological maps. Rich Survey of St. Britan shows many geological maps. All in small frames. A good geological model of the Isle of Poolech, Dorset 12x14 feet. A fine series of photos showing structure of iron materials enlarged from 5000 to 7000 dia. Another of mines. Very good pictures. A good series of small specimens (3 to mohs) of crols, building stones and ores care- fully labeled. About 13 cases (table) each about 2 x 5 feet. The one usually have

the commercial products along side in small bottles. Also salt, oils from shales and their products, the shales, slates, etc. Every one selected series for the classifi- cation: Do not make out. This is worth having made in a technical museum. total patron Mr. Barnett says we are to be returned but it may be sent to write. Pittsburg Coal Co Among other things show fine fire coal masses. One the Holling Valley coal seam is 8'3'' thick in bed. Two samples of this. Another of the Arnold Bros Mine 7'5'' Indian Territory thaw coal (2 cwt's 3/4 square and smaller pieces), building stone, oils. Fine topographic and geologic map of the Choctaw Nation Coal Field. Peru Not unexplored but has mineral materials. New River Coal company show copies of a fine geologic and topographic model of the area

Arkansas A fine quartz crystal collection from Hot Springs. A fine large top-the-relief map by Brannu. A fine large mass of Manganese ore from Independence Cr. About 4 x 2 & 2 ft. The balance exhibit is the regular or show. Nothing striking in state building. Oklahoma Shows building stones etc. There is a large lot of gypsum and 2 of selenite. See grand-math-ops: gypsum! and Overill some curious concretions. Chalk and stony bould. C. Long in charge have a relief model of the state by local talent. North Dakota Outside range has two fine large tree trunks near ports. Shipped by E. J. Baberck Grand Forks N. D. Later one moved one on each side of the main entrance to build first lump of Lignite.

Mexico A fine onyx exhibit in the Manufacture of table tops. By Mr Olman, Puebla, Mexico. Building Portugal. This exhibitor manufactures Building not yet un-foiled, but saw some samples of marble. See later page - See later page. Japan. Varied Ind. Building. Some quartz crystals uncut and many cut stones shown. Art pieces, fine cut red corals. These cut stones are mainly quartz as reddish agate. July 9-1904 In the Manuf. Build. there is a good exhibit of monuments of Barre Granite. Near Japanese exhibitor. If samples are wanted this is a craft 18 inch-cut surmounted by a 12 inch polished sphere.

Canada A pyramid of Opatite, Blackburn Mine Quebec. Asbestos a good quantity from Thetford, Meyantic, Prov. of Quebec. Two very large masses, Jasper Chalcedony, Bruce Mines, Lake Huron much material in the rough. Polished makes a fine effect, the red jasper in the white quartz. Manganese (Manganite & Pyrolusite) East Kivik District. Many fine examples. Also of Barite in good crystals, and minerals Copper ore (Chalcopyrite and Chalco-pyrite) Sudbury Dist. Well there is a very large pyramid. Albertite a small case of specimens 2 to 4 inches. From Albert Mines, N-B. A collection of about 100 specimens of building tones. Cubes 8 inch in diameter. Good quantity of Corundum from Gray Mines. Sphelite a good pyramid of it from Black Donela Mines, Ontario.

Donald Mine, Ontario. Four fine large masses of crystallized Feld- spars and Richardon Mine, Bedford Twp., Ont. The [illegible] tommers. Price an exceedingly fine case of many large pieces. Hull, Quebec, and other places. He should get some of these. See note below. Chalf pyramid from Ontario, Mr. R. L. Broadbent representative. Most of the material will be returned by the Mining Bureau but there is a disposition to let us have some of the material. Of mica just came as some is loaned and others purchased. Of feldspar all is to be returned, but some could be quarried out. [illegible] Bellstael Light Co (mean Tiffany from whiter) has a display of Onmagite bands and separated minerals. Worth Larny Another Onmagite are redings Dechitt by English in one of our modern cases.

Ohio A coal exhibit and metal products for clay etc. Pennsylvania Essentially a coal exhibit. Also many some topographic - geologic mts.. Well exhibited but a little too crowded. Illinois & ti & perhaps by otherwise. Great lengths of coal, good lead crystals but otherwise nothing striking. Michigan Metal, bohrst & mines show a series of large traps (12x15 mths) of the different (?100) iron ores. One man in office 6375 pounds belong- ing to Mrs. Cowlishaw Es., but he is now late. Write the company.

Jorru A fine fruit exhibit. A fine polished coal exhibit by C.E. Briggs, Leominster. He has five specimens but no knowledge. Mostly exhibit coals. Bryonin. A mass of flat square of Natural Soda. Showing the bedding very plainly. Some good masses of Coal (Lignite). A large pyramid of iron ore (hematite) from Jennison Py. Some building stones. Cuts 18 inches square. Coffee oil. A good oil exhibit. Hartsville Onyx. Very dark and many handed. Not pretty. Used for mantels.

Yale University In Education Building, a fine restoration of Petrarchan. About 16 feet long spread. Brown & Sharpe Mfg Co Machinery Building, made all kinds of rules met, metric etc. Decatator Transportation Building. Japan shows three immense typographic maps; 1 Japan 70 foot long, 1 Formosa and 1 of Korea and Manchuria. Also a map of the world embroidered in different colors 10x20 feet. A crayfine series of large colored photos, portraits around her and many 2x3 feet. The typographic maps are made of paper mache, made in squares about 3 feet each. These maps will be given away to some public ins- titution if wanted. The photos are to be sold. The exhibit is made by the united transportation companies thank the Toledo Chamber of Commerce.

"North Carolina Mines Build. A good general exhibit. A lot of flexible sandstone from States Cr., Zinc Ore (Cassiterite) the mines are left square. Good Cornedume Exhibit Have a gem collection, the property of J.H. Pratt. A.D. Ellen from Salem N.C. Mention his name and as having seen the flexible sandstone. She is a lawyer and was the place? The specimens here belong to the State Mrs. Reitz on charge now? Formosa - Japan. Agric. B. and Industrial Dept. 1 Geological map of Formosa mainly lithograpic Government show a collection of bamboo. A standard collection of woods putting like those of the Corn Mines. Also some carved and planed boards. Aboriginal portraits, Japan (Agric. B.) 30 lots of insects, many Lepidoptera showing all stages of metamorphosis. Many good colored photos of fruit trees, tea fields and etc.

Rice culture diseases shown by photos, speci mens and insects in alcohol. A fine series. A case of Phosphates but the roots are from Florida, Algeria and Ocean Islands. German E. Africa (Agrie B.) A number of woods are shown not in the standard mycological books 3 ft long. Also some transverse sections of logs. Quite a number of antlers, 18 or more. Considerable ethnological material. Masks also food mica. One shot in frame 20x30 inches. and a small collection of ores, of gold, iron, bronze by the Prussian Berg-Akademie. 2 good skulls of hippopotamus, 1 wild boar. 3 large elephant tusks. A number of skins of horse tail monthly.

(Agrio B.) A large collection of tree trunks from 2 1 to 3 foot tall cut off bevel [illegible]. Probably 75 pieces. Honduras (Agrio B) Shows a collection of models but the pieces auto small like of value. Some ones look not worth anything. Best things are drug plants. Each is tied to a paper toilet. New Zealand (Agrio.B.) Fine deer skin head & antlers. Many large photos of scenery and tribes. Pennsylvania (Agrio B) Shows a botanical cell, birds & man and bird eggs.

(Forest B.) Birds, Mammals, Insects and Birds, Lente a lot of insects. Good collection of birds in standard manner. Japan (Forest B.) A fine display of cut red coral. One piece is priced at W63, it in my think and must be a quick route to return or large pieces. One piece said to be broken in regard of 4000. Venezuela (Forest B.) A miserable collection rocks & minerals and fossils. Three fragments less than such of. (Hungria) Haiti (Forest B.) Not unfixed. But has considerable coral samples in standard style.

June 11, 1904 Austrian Building. Some fine large unmounted photographs here. Several very large ones of the Austrian Alps could be used to decorate geological halls. The photos are retouched in oil. Belgium Building A good geological map of Belgium 6x8 for samples of anthracite, coke and cement material. East India Building An exceedingly fine carved Paletine temple is here. Said it have taken 14 men 2 year to carve. Cost $40,000. Considerable material here that could be used in an ethnologic museum.

Utah (Mines Building) Has made ornamental stones, Three large polished slabs of Poa to verona marble. One slab is badly broken, another cracked size I call 4x8 feet. This is a very fine black marble with yellow and white figures. Some crystals of sulphur. There are many other smaller samples of marbles several of which are broken, sizes 18 x 15 n 18 x 26 inches. Of Rose Asajo marble there is slab 4 x 8 foot cracked. Another similar slab of yellow marble with whitish spots. Another of Biallo Verona a breccia.

Mr. Broser (on card) said all the Iron material could be give to one firm. The private material could be sold in prizes away. All the lots of marbles are private property but he thinks are the smaller lots could be donated to an museum. Also photos of the quarries. Write the Com. Service and the list and go to Mr. Broser. June 13- Germany (Varied Ind. B.) A large room in this building is de-voted to Centre. In one case there is a series of 13 pieces just as found in the "Blue earth". Some of these pieces are 8 to 10 inches in length. Also a piece of the blue earth with a piece granite on it. A good quantity of small pieces and fragments made of the walls of the room. This exhibition is by the Royal Prussian Board of Commerce, Co. Also found lots of granite only in centre pieces.

In another case there are 42 pairs and amber showing the different kinds, as the [illegible] forms of occurrence. Also remains of the amber tree (Pinus succinifera) Also four small cases of plants and insects ordered in amber. There are probably two slides one mounted twelve picture maps and sections for with the collection. Bulgaria (varied Ind. B.) Not installed but one pedestal has some ores and shells in sight. Brunswick Balke Collender Co (varied Ind. B.) Fine display of elephants tusks and 2 shells with tusks.

Mines & the Building Near the b.a. and b.a. state exhibits there is room of just "charts illustrating origin and development of coal, oil and land, sold at silum res." Prepared for U.S. B.I. by C.R Van Vise, C.X. Lilt and R.M. Smith. These charts are very large 10x 20 feet on whit sections, etc., analyses and the description another page. Based essentially on Van Vise theories. This space was reserved for Austria. Germany Loral Commission

Portugal (M & M Building) 16 samples of ores from "Minas do Zinzo" Hematites, Silice and Pioritites. Lent by Frank Ellingworth Director of Mines. One table case. (2 cups.) Another table case has good lead ores. Another one of pyrites etc. 24 samples of oxides, ores 10x10, 4x6 and 12x12. The exhibit not yet all unpacked. Left my card for the Com. as the attendant could inform me his name. Ceylon (M & M Building) Lots of Plumbago exhibited by James Fernando, Colombo Ceylon. One Man 2 1/2 feet square. Another large lump exhibited by St. Bastian Fernando, merchant, Colombo Ceylon.

"[illegible]" [illegible] Derual other exhibits of small stuff in boxes and trys. Also a model of a nature worked Plumbago Mine. Entire exhibit of plumbago about 10 x 10 feet. Alaska as State Building A good collection minerals of which the quartz crystals are the first and most ex- tensive. Cuba (Fresh B) A good exhibit of woods. Should be seen. Alaska Building (see Foresty B). A lot of tin ore here. One big nugget. Lots of gold and silver ores. Copper ores from Prince of Wales Island. A fine slot of Alaska garnets. Large pieces of native copper 12 in. square

China Pavilion. A very excellent door way now standing some distance in front of the pavilion. To the left outside a splendid out house, Both of these exhibits could be used in the ethnographic collection. Inside there are three small houses, with the fronts elaborately incised in ivory and carved. In the building to the left is a wooden scroll with three pieces of carved jade [on the waiting hells] stone. The building to the right and left are fairly alike. [China room inspection above] The layer one in the rear is large and elaborately decorated with golden dragons and much lofty chinese embroidery. China exhibits in varied Arts has con- centrated our bottle in amethyst, quartz and some jade. In another case there are quite a number of large light green jade carving, and birds. Also great piece of malachite set together to represent a canopy!

2 pieces of Sharkey (Carara) marble. Two framed serpentine framed tablets, 1 overstone. Some pieces of pyrite. Some coffee ore, 1 tin 1 antimony ingot. 1 piece (18 x 9 in) hematite. 1 Osceola gem stone used to make imitation jade stone. Some sulphur, antimony, blonde coffee ores (about 10), others (about 20), 2 pieces of crystallized quartz and cinabar crystals. And a few more ore. While this collection is a promise quite worth while to sell for it. 1 tall white pyro stone top inlaid.

Philippines In a building was finishing due some ores. Prof Hoffman of the Philadelphia Mus. in charge, Building to be opened Easter- day, has not in the Phils. Shows gold and iron ores, coal and stones. Also primitive methods for the reduction of ores. Material to be divided between the Natl. Mus. and the Philadelphia Mus.
