Black Shale {1 foot, hannah sandy slate with a few muscles of animal color = 2 inches. 4 ft 3 in. {3 feet black shale. {3 inches, hrm sandstone, Waldrn 2 1/2 ft to 8 feet. The lower two feet of shale contain plenty of thin lime stone layers, and this is by far the most fossiliferous part. [arrow] Sannuel 22 1/2 ft of top section is quarried, [9cut] At quarry NE of East, several hundred feet from road. Waverly rests directly on Waldrn, about 8 feet thick. It & frm this and East quarry that the fossils were obtained. At a few places several slabs of Swartzville rock show up above the Waldrn bed, and beneath the Waverly bed. [9cut] Waverly rests directly on Sannel top west of John Swell 600 yds. at old quarries. Here the thin ner fossils were found. Views 1-5 just West of John Scott. Clint m + credited from Sherman. Practically in contact with the black shale. Thickness 24 1/2 feet. But am difficult to clieting marks from Osgrd. Osgrd not well exposed here, about 10 feet are accredited to it here, this being the unknown section. Clint m? The dirty beds from top of exposed cherty beds to bottom. The bottom will marked. There may be beds higher than the one here found but this is not very likely. Thick- ess at least 27 1/2 feet. [9cut] At another point I secured a measure- ment of the Chirty Clint m with a cloth or line. Thickness of Clint m was 23 feet exactly. The Osgrd above was calculated at 12 feet, and 11 feet of the very irregular Madison was seen below. The section thence was 12 ft. of Osgrd Take upper figure 23 ft. of Clint m. Take upper figure 11 ft of Madison + + base not seen. Fossils found at top of Madison.

Foreland's place. 20 At the Spring S south of Fernvale The Black Shale is 7½ feet thick. The Spring comes out at base of Black Shale. A short distance southward the Sauran Silurian (Seijers' creek I think), slumps up below the Black Shale. Effervesces of black shale die appear 2m S think going up stream, southward. Plenty of rock between Fernvale * Springs & Spring in m road to Tank. Best take this road from Bellevue. 23 At south end of Hillsford, up the hill west of school house at Spring Black Shale m lower Silurian same section as at spring of Mr. William Perrett marked to Fernvale Springs. 1 mile section also about 2 miles south, up stream 1 mile, sorry not from school house but a broken down bridge. 17 27 Along the Franklin Carter's Creek just 7½ miles out. Then west up the B rd an road 2½ miles. (2½ miles also from B rd m) Barle Potts lives here on S end of Craig Bensley. A short dist once west of lemma a fine spring is found 1m north side of the road. Near top of hill above the spring Black Shale goes up in the large Silu- m! (in Seijers' Fink bed??) Fossils found up to top. There are Lypt nodules. The entire thickness of black shale is certain less than 10 feet. Want at m. At the Sulphur Spring. 1 mile W, 1 B rd m, the Black Shale goes directly on Sauran Silurian line at me, with fossils. This is not the Seijers' Creek bed. Up stream from Tom Fox, Seijers' Creek. Clint m is dirty up to very top. Near top is the Halcyites horizon. Halcytes very abundant after several specimens of the peculiar cup shaped fossil which I once considered a crinoid base, and which I found both at South Funnel and at White's Bend near Oakland City in the Clint m. over.
