American Clay Works and Supply Company 857 Bryant, Alpine 1261 Mr Howard Montague. (Alpine 1261) use two clays, buy one from Perfect. who calls the clay his "black special" A fairly plastic soft clay. Other from H.G. Johnson at Castle Rock who works. Has greater shrinkage and fired to deeper red, between 2 get desired results. C.R. clay softer, easier to crush. Raw clay consumption - 500 tons / yr. Hogback Mine of the Robinson Brick + Tile Co Hogback - first mine vein- G thin-not moved ss2 Cl1 3 H/cl/ ss ss clay+base The ss thickens to S. 3 vein- consistently carbonaceous. - up to 6 lb-ssd silicstun, local coal, not very plastic and John says not very sandy. John says near surface more plastic-brown Between 3+4 is 15 ft white fire ss H4 is 2boc+ 6' thick. - has baszi bentonite, silty cl. lb silt just above. some Fe concs. in upper part Foot well rippled- call ripple vein 5+6-thin beds within 15 ft of #4 4/2/ss/2 ssded=ly/sandy/4ssd mixed 6. Mau Mine - A double operation. M10 bad, which is weathered sandy zone below Glenc-Lytle discent - used in brick mix. M2a red - clay between upper Lytle sands t bessel - see Turkey Creek Section. Used exclus. for brick (in mix) no approx. I.s. chiefly red, some green streaks, 1st Bad on hogback E. side. Above ss. that caps ridge. Good plastic cl. 4' thick, Above this 10-12 feet ss with another Thin bad of silt on top, ss locally slippy. Clay is 3 1/2. Rustler Mine - Greenowes on Alzuncola Stranger Mine - one at saddle on Alzmeda hogback now abandoned. Robinson no longer leases Chieftan - both sides highway, clay beds of basic ceramic, 1/3 width - of strip which is +/- 50', ss for table mines with clay. Bottom clay best has coal over it. This - chief clay - used in ZS mixes.

Only very top of bottom clay taken. Total yearly production of raw clay is about 20,000 tons. Checking with Richardson (1915) this clay is in Dawson arkose. Richardson thinks Celher clay is too. I would guess it is in upper 1/2 of the formation but prob. below the Budesitic leases. The formation over the clay is coarse arkosic ss and cq, ss with pebbles up to .5 and some still with xl form. This rests discordant on the clays and eats them out locally in channel deposits that trend southeastward For further remarks on Dawson see card on Richardson 1915. Whisenhunt mentions a few other openings in this clay. Robinson took some from nearby, just north of Johnson mine, near l2oz-capped butte, about 5 years ago but no longer uses it. Some openings west east of Hwy 85-87 in vicinity Castle Rock but clay not 'fat' enough here. Also once mined near Lertspur.
