doc. 143 New Haven, Jan. 3, 1935 Departed from Cannon Club at noon and at 12:00 boarded the Florida Special for St. Augustine. At the N. H. Station there was Duncan telling me that G. C. Neatch had telephoned that he could board the train with me to talk over the Atlanta trip, at New York, He was there and asked with me to Wilmington because where he got off to go back to A.G. Off and on Neatch been in West Africa for 20 years in English oil interests but being too fast & search'd his head until he hit significance of the Congo submarine arm channel a genuine canyon like and strong current would cause ships to prevent their travel through it. The Congo Channel is a new affair recently made during the last 2 or 3 years.

En Route, Friday Jan. 4 - 1935 Arrived in Jacksonville at 10.35 A.M. about 5 minutes late. The train left G. Hasan about 15 min. late and for once time en route, so that we left Granington nearly 30' late. This was made up during the night. All morning the sun is shining but there is a haze in the sky. The temperature is mild and the passengers are walking on the station platform without coats and hats. It's an usual mild sunny Florida day. Out of at the Buchanan Hotel for noon lunch. Stay in same room in the Annex I have usually had. Room and board is to be $2.00 per meal. After Flagler Hotels temporary hop is open is the Prince de Leon, for changes in St. Augustine since 2 years ago.

The December freeze has killed all the hydrangeas and other warm climate flowers. Citrus fruits were also much damaged and some trees died.

St. Augustine, Fla., Pm 5-1/2 Put in most of the day first writing three reviews, letters, and last part of time revising my paper on the gology of North Vermont. Shipped to Latter Day Express on form to Min LeClerc. On Sunday evening at 8 P.M. talked to the hotel people on the Life of the Earth. They seemed to enjoy the hand stuff. My deeds are now clear to pack up tomorrow morning and join Prof. Chittenden at 11:12 A.M. on the Florida Special and go on to West Palm Beach. The people here at the Blandingham all want me to come back. My all the fond men I do not understand, since I do not mix often with them,

Wednesday, Deer Palm Beach, Jan 16, 1935 At 11:20 A.M. met Prof. Chittenden in the second section of the Florida Special and from there we traveled to this place. Left here at 4:30 P.M. and put up at the Henry Regal Hotel. Room #302 Sunday. Too late to see much of the town. Narrow one streets. Town old, a new park, On my left, from left to right. The Floridian landscape due to the flatness of the land, and its mountains (ignorable pine is rather monotonous). As we come south flowers appear and at Dr. Palm Beach we see the usual Florida introduced plants. Orange groves thick to the north. Our hotel is in the midst of a Coconut forest and all the trees are heavy with nuts. The smaller hotels are even on the ocean front.

West Palm Beach, Thursday Jan 17. Shortly after breakfast C and I went over to the north bridge from Lake Worth to Palm Beach, and finally examined the front floor of the great Breakers Hotel (from millions to build). Built in 1926-8. Then we went south and finally along the lake front. Here we saw some large homes that were especially interesting to me because of their many tropical plants. Flowers were plentiful and we saw no trace of the December freeze. Returned via the south concrete bridge and got back the Royal Palm Hotel at 12.30 P.M. Had lunch at 1.45 and at 4.45 are out for a long walk about town. West Palm Beach has not much of interest. The hotel Greater Palm Beach now last on the island fronting the Atlantic ocean. After supper out around Tally, then had a little and retired at 9.30 P.M.

"Miami, Fla., Saturday Jan. 19. Saturday the barometer was up to 830 from the office. Today it is a little low falling around 80 or 78. At 9:30 A.M. we are off on autos to Mia- cine. In the station Chittenden has his big protest picture of all of his Travelers Checks = #250. Here at Miami the streets are well paved, and the whole town is one man of hotels and restaurants. But anyone is much own burnt not look once like mudules from other opinions. Miami should be seen to be talked about and then stay away from it. The last two or three days has many huge white yachts. The reputation here is less interesting than at Palm Beach. We are staying at the Hotel Leamington. Room #408 Mr. deers.

Miami, Fla, Sunday Jan. 20 Spent the morning exploring Miami Beach. Via trolley and bus to Ocean side. A new feature here is the digging of marine channels or canals and the laying out of nice houses with land between. This gives every house swimming and boat facilities, to add to the beauty of the landscape. These canals are about 200 feet across and the water's pure ocean water. The boats also take off the sewage as well. Some of the places had fine gardens with plants not seen elsewhere. Had lunch and coffee at the Coffee Shop of the great Columbus Hotel. In the afternoon C and I saw a little of southern Miami. C, reported his loss to the American Exp Co, & tried once more to defend his many mistakes and tap. A windy day from the S.E., but no rain.

Miami, Fla. Monday, Jan. 27. While C. went to the Rand and American Express I visited the City Building and went up to the 24th floor and had a look at the city. Then we started on the trolley (20 min., S.) for Coral Gables and both were disappointed with the layout. It is another Florida tourist truffle. Had lunch (5:00) at the Peet Columbus Hotel. Read the A.G. Sunday Times. Then with C. visited the Biogayne Bay park and saw the many pleasure yachts. A grand day!! Back to the Leamington Hotel and read more Times. Had supper, packed up and will leave in the 6 A.M. bus Tomorrow as to pursue the Tamiami trail for Fort Myers. All in all it is worth while to see Mis. one, but I don't care to see it again. It does not have my kind of people.

Fort Myers, Tuesday, Jan. 22-1935 We left Miami on the Tampa Buses at 8 A.M. to go via the Tamiami Trail ac- cross the Everglades to Fort Myers. Where we arrived at 11:30 and traveled 148 miles. Put up at the Franklin Arms Hotel. Room 243 for day. The trail goes through Coral Gables but through quite a different part than that of the trolley. Block of Coral Gables - say 10 miles - are set into the Everglades, flat land with patches of water you can't go by, and the dry parts covered by islands of trees and cypress, where scrubby small cypress trees more high, than 8-10 feet. Here cranes and wading birds abound. Much for this week was country with palmetto-like tall trees of palms. Then came swamps with small pine trees. And before getting to Everglades on the Gulf of Mexico we come in the usual long miles

went first into an under growth of Palmetto. Often the birds first mentioned I saw as hawks, but I saw here and there small dark plumaged birds, larks and other looked to me like buzzards. Also Kingfishers. All in all it was a very interesting trip. The land everywhere appears to be a rubble-like irregular bedded limestone with dots filled with lime mold. If true or a soil it is my tree, and is thickest on the plain land. Some of these were being farmed. More than 99% of the Everglades, is an uninhabited wilderness. The home of the Seminole Indians. The peculiar natural plant peculiarity of Fort Diggins are the many introduced Royal Palms of Cuba. They were started here by T.O. Edison. They grow much here apparently because of the lime soil. Also croonuts or well, 83 kinds of palms live hereabouts.

Jeffres day Fort Myers, Fla., Jan. 28 1935. Stray wind from NW shifting to N. and feting order at night. Death forecrows may fall down to freezing. Slight rain yesterday and mist rain at times this morning. In the morning walked W. down to Caloosahatchee about one mile to see the T.A. Edison mansion home. Has about ten acres crowded with all kinds of plants. The house can hardly be seen for the undergrowth. Not a beautiful place but entirely for its variety of plants. Also has arecas and agaves. In the afternoon walked east. This was along First street. Both walks the street was lined with areca palms. Have seen more kinds of plants here than anywhere else. Our hotel fills up at night with auto people.

Fort Myers, Thursday, Jan. 24. A cool hot in Florida or cold morning with the thermometers down to 36°. From Tampa south nowhere did it get to freezing (32°). But the prediction is that it may set down to 20-0 tonight, but I don't think so. The day has been fine and sunny with but little wind. In the morning one waddled over the Edison bridge, which is about one mile from the Shute shore, but with the mud flats it is only 1/4 mile long. The Calusa watch his show a distance and many miles to the east. Dolled again in the afternoon along the Royal Palm Street of the city. Brief leave to return on to have for Sarasota.

Sarasota, Friday Jan. 25 - 1935 It did not prove as the weather man said it would. At 8 A.M. in Fort Myers it was 480 F. Walked around town to see the last of the Royal Palms. At 11 A.M. packed up and 12 noon we are off en route for Sarasota. Here we arrived at 1.45 P.M. Put up at the Sarasota Terrace at $2.50 balcony European. Walked about the streets just at Sarasota and then back to the hotel which is a full mile east of the shore. The most curious and prettiest hotel here is on the beach - the Granada. It may be the most expensive. Plenty big hotels here. It is getting warmer. The day was fine but somewhat lazy.

Sarasota, Saturday, Jun. 26 -1930 Took a local bus to the Ringling- Barnum Circus grounds home. It's 3 1/2 miles East of Sarasota, and occupies 500 acres. Busy cold day; the elephants and horses could not be seen. Then took the same bus to the Ringling Art Museum. 3 1/2 miles N. of the city. This Art Mus. is one of the greatest in the world, and contains all of old masters beginning with Rubens. In this art it re- calls the Metropolitan of N.Y., but then little else. The building is very fine and ornate. The garden between the two wings is superb and is replete with bronze and old fountains. This art museum is the most striking drama structure of Florida. Of the Ringling's four homes two are on either side of the museum.

Sarasota, Sunday, Jan. 27-1935 Cool again last night, but all day the thermometer is rising slowly. Cloudy day. Took the 9:30 Bus out to Lido Beach about 3 1/2 miles W. of Sarasota. This is on the Keys to the west facing the Gulf. Passed by a detective Burns minute home. This is the beach richest in animal life I have ever seen. Treet Periwinkles (up 12" long), Indian shells, Sponges in a half dozen species, Sea-fennecus, Algae-thurians, Date sand dollars, sea-weeds etc. Got back to Sarasota 11:45 A.M. As we came out from dinner at the hotel I met Professor Ferris who has a vacation home here. He wanted to take us in his car to show us around Sarasota. First E. to the vegetable farm, may sell (ship) each year 1000 car load of) and strawberries. Then to Sarasota Road about 3 mls W. of city, and then about the city. We then took us to the home where we stayed for supper.

Bradenton, Fla. Monday 28 -1935 Called at P.Q. for mail but got none. At 70.20 A.M. Perform Farm called Trotters on his car to Bradenton where we arrived before 11 A.M. Put up at Hotel Manatee River. Haven a room and bath for $15.00 per man. Walked around town, but did not find it a striking place. It is called the friend's city. Theuna Carnegie Library here. Remained at his hotel until the follow- ing Tuesday Feb 4, 1935 when I departed at 10.23 A.M. next for Jacksonville. Here I arrived at 5.05 P.M. Left at 9.36 P.M. for St. Augustine arriving at 10.28. St. Augustine, Fla. Tuesday Feb. 5-1935. Unpacked and then wrote letters all day. Saw telegram to Mr. Le Doe. Up to Feb 14 (Thursday) worked on Autobiography and finished what I had written in last years. What I did was to revise it and bring it up to date. I would like to serial chapters more, but it is quite a matter of how soon get around to do so. Feb. 14, 1935 Thursday. Wrote reviews for A.J.S. Then took up Millers note on Groti's Americæ Shifted.

The Oero human locality is an Called "Targam Port" and in one mile S, of Oero. The Port is along the north bank of the drainage canal for 300 fath and in a front made up of the actual lagoon. Below in lagoon Nos with marine shells a constituent organism. One area of about me foot deep, others are marine shells. The lagoon two, a fresh water canal anywhere from 1/2 to 24 miles three or more, There is an enormous surface beneath it and above it; the upper one the peatline. Which in the lagoon that runs from the tip of the human channel, and the various mound forms. It also has fresh water shells. Lagoon 3 is lined much with cryptic remain. "May God" the wife of the Mo-S. auto crew, if we found her and had her friend from out by the drainage again or had stopped down in the Logan Bros. The guide to the Tanzania Park is a wild residence familiar with the Deer men first and the lone birds. His name is Mr. Frank Ayers Brooklyn, New Beach Florida, If free must winter he said he would dig for me for a few months at $250 per day. This help would be had at best for day. Thursday March 14-1935 West Palm Beach Spent the morning at Palm Beach riding around taking in all the pretty homes. Lunched on camp lunch at the Royal Broth... Left Palm Beach at 2:20 P.M. for Miami, then we got within 8-9 miles of Miami and took the other road east by the Atlantic Ocean to Miami County, and so on to the bridge and caused way me to Miami proper. Here we arrived at 5.15. Put up at the Leonington Hotel. Had supper at the Coffee Shop of the same Leonington Hotel. Then chatted with the ladies. Retired at 8:30 P.M. a very quiet one. Motored today 80 miles.

Miami, Friday March 15-93 Left Miami on a fine cool morn ing at 8.00 for Bradenton on the Mana tee Rive. We stopped to ride around in Coral Ga- labs to see the many fine small houses and the great Hillmans Golf Hotel. This was all of it all the Coral Gables. I came with Chittin. dinner at the end of the Tasty Line. Then we started over the Tamirondi Trail. On the way we stopped to see Coastnut Hills Lemire Home. The country is not from than last journey, and the Cypress trees had small leaves. Saw but few birds, and most of these were buzzards. We got to Naples on the West Coast at 12.05. Felt Greys at 1.05 and had lunch at Franklin Corns. Then Le Pine Took rich with stomach trouble, Sat to Punta Gorda at 2.45 P.M.

Olando to St. Augustine. Sunday March 18, 1935- Left Orlando at 9 A.M. for Winter Park & Tracy to Orlando at 10:30. Then started for Delton Springs via Ocala. We left Orlando at 10:30 A.M., via Winter Garden, Lake Apopka, Minola, Clermont other one and Harvelands! from Daytona Cut off in to lake arrived at 11:30. Then turned south 12 miles to see the Blanchard Oil drill is now nearly set up. Drill begins to bore days (a rotary press). Then back to Clermont where we started north at 12:00 to Leesburg. Had lunch here - left at 1:55. Left to Ocala at 2:55 and Delton Springs at 3:55. Took the boat ride to see the springs down to 8 o'clock. Left the springs at 4:20. Left to Palatka at 5:15 and St. Augustine at 6:45. Put up at Buckingham Hotel.

April 4 and 5th 1935 Took the usual easy, Outdoors much of the time, Read some in St. Augustines Library. April 6-1935 St. Augustin's Spent most of the day in the Library reading Russells History of Phil., and Stewart Herts Cosmos in English, Found the latter very interesting and informing. On the other it is old of date, A rather piece of writing, as he says "Popular Science" and dry Philosophical trumphant. Emphasizes all Cosmos almost all physical but organic is also neglected, takes less astronomy. Fine for the size of Science in that time.

New York City April 8-1935 at 9:30 A.M. Told some urine to Dr. Romerg. and at 2 P.M. called on Dr. Timen. He found one in good health, but with my usual low blood pressure of 110 pounds. I weigh 160 pounds or about 15 pounds too much. It is all due to eating too much. No albumin or casts in my urine, and heart is norm- al. Took a little cold coming from Flori- da, but the Dr Timen was to normal sequence for a warm climate to a cold one. All in all I am in good condition. Newford, Tuesday April 9-1935 Dark, windy and cold day. Have not seen the sun since I left Florida. Read all morning the four page edi- torial in the Times of the death of its own- er Adolf Ochs, who was born at Cincinnati in March 1858, and when I was born the following July. What a great career has been his! Nothing but worthy and only no more absorbing than that. At 3.30 called again on Dr. Timmins to get more cold shots and more advice. Left N.Y. 4.33 P.M. to get to New Haven before 7 P.M.

December 5-1935 was confined with a cold to my room at the Lawn Club for four days, and was advised by Dr. Greta and Mrs. LeVene to start at once for Florida. But started on Dec. 5 at 7.30 A. M. On the train Friday the sixth north of near Richmond Va having had a cold night, and ice carried on all the way down into North Carolina. Saturday Dec. 7-1935 got to Mobile Ala., and put up at the Mobile Riv Hotel. January 28-1936 Professor Chittenden arrived, and as he wants to get to Lakeland later on, we remain at the Mobile Riv Hotel until Thursday Feb 27-1936.

Thursday Feb. 27 -1936 Left Bradenton at 9.16 AM for Lakeland, where we arrived at 11.40 A.M. Put up at the Lakeland Terrace, another of the Collier Hotels, with rates about the same at both places, about four dollars per day American plan. At Macclinton Fla., the Gov. is starting to build a P.O. Here the cella digging is just peculiarly my interest. At the top is a clean worked fine ground sand from 2 to 4 feet thick, resting directly upon a blue-black and in places a gellow-brown oxidized sandy muck replete with plant roots and nothing else. As far as explored this red

soil than a thickner from 2 to 4 feet thick, on the irregular surface of which the sea invaded. At the P.O. site in Manatee Ave (cor ? 7 or 8th) the white sand has my cares an oyster or portland shell, but in the next block east there is an abundance of oyster shells showing the inundation that it have been in an arm of the Gulf. The bottom of the Post Office cellar is replete with oysters and is not more 2-3 feet above high tide at present. Evidently his old much to me of the little aerial tories when the sea level stood over the water 50 feet or higher lower than it does now. Then the sea level rose and stood 15-20 feet higher than it does now,

Lakeland, Fla., Feb. 28, 1936 A. C. Lane with E. H. Driege (Jacksonville) called to talk with Mr. Blanchard's oil venture. After lunch Mr. Driege lost us in his auto 30 miles N.E. travel site. Now down to 2700'. The last 300 feet had much anhydrite one bed over 100' thick. Very hard to drill by the churn method. Saw about 800' of a two inch core, all marl lens ls, dl, and some argillite. Saying no attention to find and have no idea when they are slate/pathical. At about 2700' in Hule- Haeck ls (maybe? staurolite) another maybe older Eocene a Cret. Saw one forams, and therein two ls within the drilled out, and of course from to determine. Blanchard gets his money by selling real- estate at inflated prices in the hope he will out-drill, or far no showing.

Lakeland March 19-1936 Professor Chittenden returned home today at 11.40 A.M. We have been together in Florida just exactly two months. His daughter is not well and dad wants to get back. Besides, he has run out of work and can not know what to do to keep himself interested. Lakeland April 10-1936 For two weeks I have been working on the stratigraphy of New York, and to- day I finished the books as far as I have them. The N.Y. chapter is going like a fine me. This afternoon I packed up and shipped by Express two boxes of books and M5 (illegible) home. Tomorrow start for Washington D.C.

Lakeland, Fla. April 11-1936 Left the Lakeland Terrace Hotel at 11 A.M. with my baggage to take the 11.40 train for Washington. Had a splendid winter and did much work towards the second vol. of my Historical Series of N.A. A fine warm day, but all during the last two weeks. The afternoons have been too hot. Went out in tram. April 12-1936 Got to Washington an hour late, at about ten A.M. Visited the new and old N.J.N.M., and the Smithsonian. Called on Mrs Merrick in the evening. Tried to put myself at the Hamilton but they had no room. So I put up at the Powhatan,

Washington April 13-1936 Spent morning the day with Corfu, and then paid my respects to Mrs. Mordey and [illegible] Basely, Put in the evening at the hotel. Washington April 14-1936 Called on Gooding and had a talk with him for an hour. Did not learn anything more of my Antilleman friend. Then visited the Congressional Library, After lunch tried to see Selmae and failed. In the morning tried to see Barrett and found him out, Then called on Sterrenom, Reeside and Stanton. Bridge introduced me to Miss Loohman, Made a final call on [illegible] Corfu.

"Washington April 15-1936 Left Dr. on a fine morning at 10:00 and will arrive at New Haven at 4 P.M. The last two days has been co- plete with new information among the paleontologists of the U.S.N.M. and J.S.G.S. Cooper is the one with most new correlations on the Middle Devonian and I hope he will carry his correlations into full fruition. He wants to place the Sturgespokes fauna between the Onondaga and the Hamilton. This is radical and appears to be a- gainst all former information. He tried to see himself in the Delaware of Ohio and elsewhere to substantiate this, I must have to look into this".

Tuesday June 30 - 1936 Left Columbus at 4,10 p.m. in N. York and Cincinnati Ohio. Fine day Left O.Y. at 7,10 and got to Cincinnati half hour late next day, or 1, P. M. Fare in sleeper #29-- Wednesday July 1 - 1936 Stilled at Worth Alberts home Friday July 3 - 1936 Carl Harry John Albert and me in great tree Harris's home at North Bend. Fine scenic place on the Ohio river almost at the Indiana bordering line. Saturday July 4 - 1936, Alice and Carl Harry went with me to High Bridge Kentucky. A 300 mile drive and got

back to Albert home by co P.M. Sunday July 5 - 1936 bested lake day, and family reunion. Monday July 6 - 1936 Left Cen. at 9 A.M. and got to Niagara Falls at 10 P.M. Put up at Niagara Hotel. Tuesday July 7 - 1936 spent the day seeing Niagara Falls from both sides. Wednesday July 8 - 1936 Left Niagara Falls at 6.30 A.M. and Buffalo N.Y. at 8 A.M. fur Niagara where I arrived at 5.45 P.M. New Haven at 8 A.M.
