Saturday before the Lecture SCHUCHERT LECTURE WILL BE WEDNESDAY Dr. Charles Schuchert, lecturer in stratigraphy at the University of Arizona and a member of the faculty of Yale university, will deliver an illustrated lecture on "Giant Reptiles of the Mediaeval World" Wednesday night at 8 o'clock in the university auditorium. E. R. Riesen, who is in charge of the Wednesday evening lecture series announced yesterday. The lecture will be open to the public and free. Dr. Schuchert, a visiting professor with the university, is head of the department of stratigraphy of Yale. He obtained the slides for the lecture to be given Wednesday from the Yale visual education service. He is known as an excellent speaker. The week following, the Desert staff of the university will stage a program of entertainment and educational numbers. The members of the yearbook staff are working on the program at present, and promise something new, according to Frank Southgate, business manager.

The day of the lecture March 4, 1938 GIANT REPTILES TO BE SCHUCHERT TOPIC Dr. Carl Schuchert of Yale, visiting professor in stratigraphy at the University of Arizona from Yale, will speak this evening, at 8 o'clock, in the University auditorium, on "The Giant Reptiles of the Medieval World." The public is invited to attend this lecture, which is free. Dr. Schuchert is a noted paleon- tologist and historical geologist, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and an author of several books on paleontology and geology. He has been conducting a series of lectures at the University during the winter. The lecture will be illustrated with slides obtained from the Yale Uni- versity Press service. It is ex- pected that a large number of win- ter visitors will take advantage of the opportunity given to hear Schuchert, according to Prof. E. R. Riesen, who is directing the Wednes- day evening series of the university.

New Haven, Conn. Dec 27-1934 Started away in a warm sunless day at 5 P.M. for New York. At 7.15 had a cat take me to the Staten Ferry and at 8.15 we are off for Ithaca, N.Y. and the meetings of the G.S.L., Soc. of America. "He" consists of Berkes and Colony of Columbia Univ. and Johns-chut. All agree to go to bed at 9.15 P.M. Ithaca, New York, Dec 28-1934. A little cold in the sleepers during the night. On time at Ithaca, and we are met by Prof. Rice. Mr tells us in a car to the ornemens dorm. It's Providence Circle House. A large building, good furnishings, but the bed rooms are double and without mat and bath. At ten the Council of the G.S.L. meets, and we are at it until 4.30 P.M. The order was the ordi- ary sorters. Death of Princeton is to be next years President; will officiate at New Haven over the draft for a pool to come to us.

Ithaca, N.Y. Monday Dec 29-1934 At 9 A.M. the Gr. SVA starts its meetings. Jores asked to read Hurkes Memorial of Sir Archibald Leicis. S.O. Smith spoke on firemen in Alaska Ports. J.C White for John J. Sterensm. And then there were others. In the afternoon attended the Pal. Doc. meeting Hand lands of T.C. Chambu lin. In the evening listened to Lindgrens Ad- dres on Metasomatism. Then attended the smoker. During the smoker we all learned that Chambula coming out of the Baker Lab. had fallen on the stairs and was considerably hurt about the hip. In the morning he is to be X-rayed to see if bones are broken. Poor man, nearly blind and 83 years old.

Ithaca, N.Y. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1924. Attended meetings of the G.S.A. all day. Presided considerable of the afternoon. Chambelin is not that to be my bad hurt. At least no bones are broken. The Banquet came off breee. Kemp was toastmaster, and Chambelin was given the Bronze medal; landed to Keller. Kemp did not seem to me to be at his best. By 10.30 the banquet was over. Ithaca, Wednesday Dec. 31-1924 Presided all morning, and the other came to a good ending. Done morning tired. At 3.15 started in a taxi for the depot (Lakawana) to get my baggage and then to the Lehigh depot where I started for Buffalo at 4.49. Providence Rivly Hall charge for 3 1/2 days = $13.08 Railway to Cincinnati is 20.92 and Pull- man 4.50 = $24.50. Got to Buffalo just, and into sleep at 9 p.m. before it or 11.47 p.m.

"In our sleep are Downrocker, G. N. Rice, Bestgate and wife, and Twitchelle of Cincinnati. We can go to bed at 10 PM. It is snowing lightly, but the night is not cold. Cincinnati, Ohio, January 1-1925 A very dark morning on the Big Four train O.H. to Cin. The ground is thick covered by old snow, and one may look for more today. The sleepers were very comfortable all the night. Got to Cin. on time at 9.30 AM. and Altatons at hand. Arrived [illegible] at Greenwood and at 12 noon we are at Emmas for our annual celebration. Then all day the Schuoluts talked and we all had a fine family reunion. At ten P.M. I landed again at Altut's home and soon got to bed. It is raining and snowing all the afternoon and evening!

En Route Cincinnati Jan 2, 1925 Friday. Because of the snow we got off early to have enough time to get slowly in the car to the depot. We are off at 6.30 and at 7.15 we are off for the train. It starts at 8.15, on a dark day with a little snow flying. The temperature is around freezing, but it is not cold. Passing Junction City I see the old familiar cut three miles south where I got our my coal for steel in 1889 or 1890. Along the Hamilton is the Geneva Black shale. Then soon follows the Mississippi down to south of the Jay King Cut terminal. In northern Tenn, we are in the Penn, and here for 50 miles all the sandstone are free set to the south or the direction of the train. It is not cross-hedged. We go through many cuts of the Penn, to within 2 hours of Chattanooga and over the hills are much folded. Arrive at C, at 6.20 and left at 6.35 P.M., all day it is dark and rains up to noon.

Saturday En Route, New Orleans, Jan 3 - 1925 Left for New Orleans on time at 9.30 A.M. Was transferred to Southern Pacific at Union Station. Checked my baggage and walked to the rim front of Canal Street. When I started the sun was shining and shone on the shade side of the street. It did clouded and got cool, saw two steamers of the United Fruit Co going out and one Coffee steamer unloading. Left back to the depot and at 12.10 P.M., dem off in the Sunset Limited. If all goes well I will be at Tucson at 6.00 A.M., Monday. Shortly after starting west it began to rain, and it rained hard for 3 hours when it cleared into a sunny evening. We are stilly rest at about 3.5 miles per hour. The train kept on time and at 8.30 P.M. got Tr Red.

Sunday En Route, Tuxco, Jan 4, 1935. Set out at 7:30, and are in the desert in the Comanchean formations. Go it for all along until 2.55 P.M., when are in the Marathon region. What an enormous mass of telegrams matter was deposited in Cret.Times herein Tuxco and Mexico. When did it all come from. Were there in some sense then in the sphere of the Paleocene of the Miss. Valley. Marathon State Bank, at Marathon, State National Bank at Alpine, or Holland Hotel. If I get going home on my way back had better try one of these places for an auto. The structure of the Texas and older forma- tions again looks to me like folding at the close of Texas time = about Middle Pennsylvania. The older Penn. is fairly well exposed on east side of Haymond. Chances for finds not good, but some should be present. Been driving all afternoon. I return at 8:30 P.M.

Tucson, Sunday Jan. 5-1925 Arrived at 6.15 A.M., and put up at once at the Santa Rita Hotel. Tuesday, Thursday Jan. 15-1925 It rained considerably during the night and this morning the desert looked wet, the air is much clouded, and the mt tops are white with a thin snow. It remains clouded most of the day, and gets colder. Snow storms once during the day in the mts, but nothing falls in the desert. At 4.30 I start my first lecture in the course Stratigraphic Geology.

Tucson, Sunday Jan 25, 1920. The days are getting longer and warmer. During the middle of the day it is almost hot, but the nights remain cool. Dr Far have given lectures. Now the first semester is at end, and this week is devoted to examinations. Not until I begin to lecture again. Most of the time I am in the Room in Bed. Dr Far have written 7 chapters. They will not go slow, but hope to finish the little book before I go back to New Haven. To morning Jan. 31 I go with Stogams and Lobber to the Balluna Mt's, about 100 miles E of N. of Tucson.

Jan 31-1925 Saturday At 8 A.M. Stoyanow and R. Rebbu er at the Santa Rita Hotel ont a Dodge car and take me to the Balliera Mts. We start north around the western end of the Santa Catalina Mts and remain on the Phoenix road for 26 miles and go east to Oracle 11 miles. This is about 4000 feet or more above sea-level and then sort but down into a tributay that goes south into the Pila Rivera. The east road comes out a little south of Mammoth where there is a mine. Then north past Fenman and abandoned Fort Grant to Grindelman on the Pila River. It was 11 A.M. when we got here having come 75 miles. Had lunch and arranged to stay at the Van Althin Hotel and then we re- hatched one road 1 mile and then east for 4 1/2 miles on a ranch road. A walk of half a mile took us to another 1 1/2 miles of Chip Saddle Mt. and the exposures of the Pennsylvanian. The section is about 800 feet thick, and we began collecting near the top, and followed the ridge south for about one mile.

Pale Top is a chert conglomerate of angular pieces of all sides of tr to 4 inches across. It seems to have no forms of its own in the jute, in fact the jute is all of the same kind of material. Loose fusa- line occur like those particular and gypsumone. It proves essentially incomparably varieties of the Penn. belus and I saw an original hollow maybe or flat deep. Age is unknown, but may be the beginning of either later Perm. in Permia. Thickness unknown, what is seen maybe 10 feet. All the material is of the Penn. belus. Pennsylvanian. Reddish li less than 10 feet thick. Has the Orthostichia morganiana fauna below blue li. with many Orthites like those above and below. Have none of this fauna. Thickness ? 10 feet. Blue li with bioclastic algae goes somewhat chalky. ? 20 feet thick. Contains many bya Productus that Morganii in the Russia princeuraldi's like the fauna.

Same material as last but still more shaly. Around in a Majimifera. See the fauna. Thickness at least 25 feet. Then follows below thick bedded cherty li, forming some 200 foot thick. Did not collect in it. Stgann says it has no fossils in abundance. Then thin bedded shag li. in alternation with shale Petrify enough thick. Has a small spindle shaped to many round Fusulina (not secalia) It is this species that occurs at the coal at the top. Base not seen; covered by lava. To the northeast for 2 miles there is a thin bedded lens that Stogener and Grotter examined on Feb 1. Stogener says it is older Penns = Grees unit and is not rich in fossils. It rests on heavy bedded li. that St. holds looks like Mississippi. This imperfect relation with the rest of the Penn. has a The Penn. here has a thickness of at least 1000 feet. So that the Penn. of the Ballina Mtg is at least 2000 feet.

Feb. 1 - 1925 - Sunday. Spent the morning meeting at the place of yesterday. Al[illegible] and Berta went S.E. to see what they found there, are and found the - Paero Pennsylvanian. Had lunch at Drinckleman's at 1.30 and at 2.15 we are off for Tuesm. last to the latter at 6.30 P.M. Feb. 8-1925 - Sunday A large party of students led by Dr. Agres, and including Rausome, Lorensy and myself started at 8.A.M. for the Santa Rita Mts, about 5 to 60 miles south of Tucson. Our place was in the foothills on the eastern side of the Santa Rita Mts, at an abandoned Onyx Mine and Cave, in Sawmill Canyon. Here there is a thick series (6000') of reddish sh. and s. of Comanche age

through which extend ridges of Pennsylvanian limestone. These are on both sides of Sawmill canyon, but the eastern side is marked in Schraders Pm. (Devonian). There is no Devonian here but I did not see it; all the forms down are clearly Pennsylvanian. Left a few forms and turned west to Strugman. For more detail see F.C. Schrader in Bull. 582 (1910) J.S. S.D., "Mineral Deposits of the Santa Rita and Patagonia Mts." After seeing the basal Devonian in the Whetstone Out it is now clear that I did see very similar Dev. in Sawmill Canyon. Above the Devonian must be some Mississippian since I did not get Pennsylvanian until well up on the ridge east of the canyon bottom. The Penn. has helms (in east side) a post-herd formal (large B. crassus) and listra of a deeply eroded Productus outcrop of late Penn. Saw no Strigman Camunatus

Tucson, Arizona, Feb 23 1950 At 8 A.M I am off in R.F. Ibarrones car for the Chetstone Mts. The party consists of Prof. Stegmow, Ibarrone and C.E. Gooddell It is about 70 miles to about the center of the Chetstone Mts. The place is the same one I visited last year with Stegmow, Lawson and Ramsome. We collected most of the time in the uppermost Cambrian. Large Hyolithes are common with a large Cepicethalus and other trilobites. The horizon looks to me to be Carbonian like that of Llano, Texas. Or Ordovician here. Within 20 feet of the Cambrian collected is comes the Devonian. The basal ten feet is a dolomite or a highly magnesian li. in which away are the fossils are illiterated. Stromatopora that I like Cryptogron are not common. The Cladifera and a small grigid coral that is pretty and for mossits.

The 1925 class consisted of J. H. Booker just about junior merit. J. H. Eastman (tabs or tests) Lawyer, W. R. Hoffman (test man) 85% & 80% * J. G. Mulford (young and poor student) C. A. Russell hardy faced man. R. F. Shoover just about faced. S. E. Sturdevant 80% second man. T. R. Valenta (half-freed) Poor student B. Gebber 80% first and passed second. A. Brieden (H. Louis brick-layer) Failed C. E. Woodell (badly shot soldier) just passed second class. Good first one. Instructors Agree Janson of the State Denny Wilson 75% and passed second man. For a time had R. I. Farrar of C.P. Univ. * Am of a wealthy Detroit automobile maker. Much interested in old centers and wants to study the berling of Central America, his mother and can't stand cold climates.

(March 25 1925. Wednesday, Tucson. My lecture course in Stratigraphic Paleontology came to an end this morning. Finished all to the close of the Paleozoic. The students are finding the course unusually hard, and with a few exceptions are not putting in the necessary time on the forms. The first exam was not a good result. Hoffman was good at 85%. Mordele was very near this mark, and the rest marked literally mine around 75%. At least I would have questioned many one of them excepting Hoffman and Mordele. October did not take the exam. Bullard failed badly. Next Friday comes the test on forms, and from what Stofanaw tells me, no more 3 or 4 girls do poorly will. The trouble is they don't work hard enough. When I read the papers I found out none of them good. Just fancy in Arizona.

Tuesday, Arjama, April 1925 Closed up shop today and paid all my bills. Will start for the Grand Canyon tomorrow. See the other food on this trip. Made out "Reed". And had lunch than this one.
