"Dec.27-1927 not any Lucy Shucker ideas on Dr. Dronke, does not believe in Tehuantepec gennj, or do I know now. Said some- things against sea way between Guate mala and Cuba. Heigh all in to lift of C. & S. Jr topographic map of Gulf area. Dec.27-1927 In a zone of 500 feet in below- another much mud gypsum, but much trace of salt. Comes from near the Cretaceous. Can this mean Jurassic or Triassic sea way east of Texas and coming ashore now the Iatine uplift? Dec.27-1927 Shuleron thinks he starts above the Paleogene in La., may be between 15,000 and 20,000 feet thick. Droner agrees to this, in at least as thin as 15,000 or in half near 20,000 feet.

Dec. 30-1927. I am walking about the Capitol Building, and am struck with the reef nature of the limestone. In places it looks like the coral gravel, and shoing hairs aligned growths like hypha- groths, also current action at the rim and torn I guess. Dr. [illegible] has in much algal or stimulated flora growth are a white felties interlaced in the left leg of the general limestone, also must Bryozoa material. Look of this lie in Japan's Sea of Japan. It is all a fine illustration of reef limestone. Later on I see that nearly all is Bryozoa material. Reef-li. of Bryozoa and algal growths. The cyptogron-like growths must be of algal nature at an intricate structure.

Dec. 27 - 1927 As Vincent says, if going to now Europe = Africa I must start my maps. But wait, there is my late Dept. along the Atlantic side. Dec 27-1927 Stanton answered my question that everywhere a complete hear [illegible] between he N and S. Coats, ex- cpting in Cali. - beginning where they may be a complete successin. If or be the Blair mine was due in late Cromachian time and continued into he Np. Coats seen spread- ing north from he foot of key. Dec 27-1927 Thesen holds that the typical Cong wales by Jared Fox and that the mithe Stanley are all of their age. In Jan. 1928 Sould was put out a bulletin by himself and another by Ernest G. Jernst

When studying and Which's paper he spent with him, and later he got Annicas paper when he saw that Which interpretation might be wrong. Which is wrapped up in his inter- pretation, and the assumption of a land ice-age. Mrin deals only facts of, and then refutes Which. Set these two Bulletins and study them. Dec 29 1929 Austin Clark tells me that the Dickinson Press, Baltimore, and Pan Am Transl can always send scientific books to print. Both of the houses have printing only areas.

Jan 6 1928 In looking at a Bartholomew map of oceanic depths, I see that had stretching from the Yucatan for much of some distance with a deep margin to E. and across m. Cuba. Honduras goes N.E. to Jamaica and in Haiti. Cuba goes S-E into m. Haiti and or in Porto Rico. But if Prince there is a land going N. into the Lesser Antilles. Between the latter and Porto Rico there is an opening down to Porto Rico deeps. To the north Honduras in the Gulf left deep, the Caribbean is also deep, but not the Gulf of Mexico. The West Indies map shows that the end of Trinidad stretches W.E out into ocean according to the Windward Islands not connected onto S.A. The N.W. of Trin idad goes S.W. to E. of Venezuela. The out to W. of those reaches down the E. into the Caribbean. Porto Rico includes the Lepern Islands, for the whole.

Command and Hindward = Lower Gentlemen dolent appearance to be nothing more than the same titles. Jan 13 - 1928, Lafayette pears are much used in New Orleans as an omelet Stews, from Roseland to the mouth of W.C. The peppers are always up to about three inch and are mainly clefts and to some extent quarts. Evidence to material is partly from the Mississippi r. Since I have a piece that has fins. An old friend of mine told me he had collected Min. Fins. All the peppers are chiefly stained a yellow ochre, but is all an dull oxy- dyed. It is the work of the locals to the mouth with some by the river. Even or the peppers are not more than out- rounded.

"Jan. Scientific American Vol. 94, p. 305. Days of the Earth and its Rhythms. "From long time we have wished for a good, accurate but entirely popular accurately geology to recommend to inquiry readers, and at last we has arrived." The Earth-and-its-Rhythms contains about the same run of material as that is presented to uni- college students in elementary courses, bet unlike a text-book it is readable able and interesting. Why won't teachers use such books in place of personal formal, 'hard-bound' text-book which rebels the student, killing his interest? A teacher who had the courage to do this would without discover a new found interest in school work. Knowing what it means out of a book is an unmistakably, we that few authors can seem to exercise when writing in their own pet subjects!"

"The Scriptures in the Making" By Agnes Peacock. Macmillan Co. 1927. A very readable book to read through and put to- getter. Read 3 chapters in the May 19th. "Essays in Physical Science" By Julian Huxley. A. A. Knopf, 1927 Set it for my library. "The Romance of the Fungus World", By R. W. and F. W. Rolle. Leffingwell 1929 Set the book on "Tides" published by Appleton in 1926 $2.50

Jan. 23, 1928 Reading Julian Huxley's Essays in Popular Science (Knopf, 1927). The short chapter "Evolution and Purpose" he said I ought to have in my text - but not on the plan of Evolution. In my chapter on Man I might have a paragraph or two, or it could be tied around Huxley's Dominant Sex. "The Control of heredity G- cle" has one that deals with natural selection forms. The Normanshill in Geostin Glen is mainly quarreled with zones of marble, triolite & blue free shale that have no mica. Chadwick says he collected them in the shale some 10 to 20 ft. of Normanshill shale. In the Europe place, in the Broom street quarry, Chadwick thinks them to be often phyllite. The Normanshill is fine in Cathedrals and at least 200' and maybe twice as thick. An anticline here.

"Harry C atkins. Quary. Cogman 30' of mine Turtle Pond quarry, Leeds Paris. From 1-2' above Marlins can be found beds of t. Marlins in the base of Cogmans. Beds rounded and up 4" high. Depth beneath bottom at Alby: the model contains any pronounced features it is obscure features. Gradations not apparent to plain eye. Marlins seem to round out in the lower zone first perhaps less with a secondary one Park farm back of Alby is in the Kalkberg, = Really the southern start of Lyce Dietrichs.

1931 Started from New Haven Monday Aug 17 for the White Mts. Left at 9.20 A.M. and arrived at Crawford House at 6.15 P.M. A sunny hot day. Tuesday (18) fine, clear and cool. Climbed Mt. Willard from 1900' above sea level to 2786' Fine view looking E towards the Hotel to Chokomona. Wednesday (19) rested. Thursday (20) walked S on a clear cool morning 2 1/2 miles to see the Presidential Range and the Rock R R going up Mt. Washington. Did 5 and the morning. Friday (21) climbed Mt Willard again and this time easier. While at the top train came on Glen's Hill, stayed after another, and as I went down met Prof. Litchell and his family ladies. In car about 24.

In the course of the trip walked limited Mt. Drillard five times, and once walked to Bretton Woods and back, a distance of seven miles, all in three hours. Left Crawford on a bright Monday morning, Aug. 31, 1931. Train left at 8.25 a.m. Back to New Haven at 5.15 p. m.

Then to Albert's own home, when I delayed for the rest of the day. Oct 25 Sunday. Albert had to go to his shop after breakfast and so Alice and I went with him. Then outwore all our workers Cnr. and the Child Creek Rally, then to home, when we had dinner Emma also here.

A perfect day Oct. 25-- Monday. In the afternoon called on David at Lantana Ave on College Hill. Did not see his Collection To Cir. Mr. Ferencz sent his Felix, Showed me his Photog/This acco- tinuate for ?-Presidency. A very fine lot indeed. Portals has a few photos and specimens, David nothing about fancying it, and hardly want it. Then back to Albert home. Em. ma left at 8. P. M. in the car (Alice) Iowa; the train came to some show, and that he lost his job for Friday. Oct. 26--1931 Monday, Cooler but another bright day. At 8.20 Albert took Alice to tickets and one to Frank at Franklin Blvd. tickets for Rose and Albert (round trip) To Canton, O., and telegraphed this. of our arrival to make me early at 8.08 P.M. Tickets may be $2.

Then spent 2 hours at the Art Museum, one in the first shape. Lots of old masters and two portraits of George Washington, one by R. Peale and to the S. Stuart. Really one of the great collections in the US. Had lunch at the new Merritt Netherlands Hotel. Have tours building over to St. Louis. Then to the top of the town to see the city. Spent the evening at Emmes home and retired at 10:30. Oct. 27 Tuesday. A cool morning with sun- shine and showers. At 1:00 P.M. Albert and his wife are off with one to Canton where we return at 8:00 A.M. During the morning read The Moral for Educated Men, by G.E. Riggs, B.M. Mon- ter. 1930.

"Work and learning are made in life, and our life to learn and work" Luther Spencer. "Education is but a part of life, and work is not the whole of life" A. E. Dipsman. Arrived on time at 8.09 P.M. Phil and [illegible] at station to meet the first of us. At Columbus we had a wait of 45 min. or I lost a bet and we saw the Capitol, the State Penitentiary, and the State Penit. Then off for Canton 4.40 P.M.

Oct. 28, Wednesday, In the morning Altus and I walked over to the One Lady Memorial and gave some shots to him. In the afternoon drove took us 30 out W to New Philadelphia to show us at Schoerbron the ol- dest settlement in Ohio. A German settlement of 1772, now restored and made a park by the State. On the way saw the site of Fort Lawrence of 1778-9 after which the Indians loyal to England. The Fort was abandoned short afterwards. In the evening he three Altus- tis had supper with us at the Schoechuts.

Octm 29 - Thursday Left to Johnshwts and Centn at 10 A.M. and Cleveland for Buffalo at 12.45 P.M. The days is again fine ad warm, Traveling cost amt $8-00- S 1 1/2 hr Buffalo at 5.10 and at 5.20 over off for Lreelfort, now I arrived at 6.35 P. M. Stopping at the Paul Hotel. After supper called on Mrs Spalding Evans, 158 High st but as she did not know of the Cransh family I walked the High st for a time and then found a man with his wife standing on the porch talking some first ain. I told him what I wanted and after telephone told me to come in the Corporation Counsel Rege Curtis Lewis at his office and give him fitting directions how to get what is locally known the Cransh Family.

Oct. 30. 1931 Friday Spent te morning at the High School Library reading up on Niagara county and Lancaster history. After lunch called in Dr. C.W.D. Ringuebey but found he was at home. see Then took a cart and went to Chestnut Ridge to see the Frank home and Chestnut Ridge cemetery, but learned little, see account in separate sheet of paper.

Oct. 31-1931 Saturday Left L[illegible] at 9.05 P.M. for Niagara Falls. Changed cars in Tonawanda. Got to Niagara Falls at about 10, A.M. Bought my ticket to Niagara for start tonight at 10.35, ride sleep #20.38. Then to S[illegible] Island, America Falls, across the Centurion Bridge to Canada to see the Horseshoe Falls. Had lunch in front of the latter. Then by bus to Fort Niagara. On the back stopped at 3.30 a.m. the Public Library and read another history books on Niagara County. Learned nothing about Caleb Mark. Had supper at the Niagara Hotel, and got into the sleep at 9.15 P.M.

November 1 - 1931 Sunday. Got up at 7.30 and had Breakfast while ferrying Brent Point, a foggy morning, and it may be a fine day. Arrived on time at 9.30. Put up at the Merry Hill Hotel. Spent the afternoon at the G.O.M. Mt. In the evening on the Mash nite. Proved out the winter arising my Antillean His, and it is near about done, all excepting the illustrations.

Dec. 26 - 1931 Lefr N. Haven fr St. Augustine at 7.50 P.M. Sleptn all the way thnt to S.A. Fare totl ways $ 75.57. Sleeper 12.75, oneway. Dec 27 - 1931 Slept cold most of the nights and finally in the morning in outside Virginia frige and got up to keep warm. Ice or water as far south as Florence part of S. Caroli na. "Tuesday Aug 29, 1933 First Place to Milton dol, north of Cattle Hill to fish points. Honnell took away a large amount of rock to break up and clot at home. Has more material than I have. I collected about 7 the red mille from shallow overcut and of the. 2 South of Georgia Plain (320) by the road side and north of house in Highgate state under fishermen. W' cress. Over it is another nice one and is a little Corless egg. Here in a loose (glacial boulder) area found Agriotes and Lagula [illegible] [illegible]. On the NW side of road is another Fisherman 18' long. About 3 miles N. of last place is one Highgate in cliff quarries from metal. About 1/2 mile N W of Park gorge. Here occur 4 fishermen claw together to length 40' long. The others are smaller 5-15 long. In one Honnell got tiny tailfish.

Aug. 31-1933 Donaldon Crail. Found come it is 250 feet horizontal To Jigate slate dip W. 10°. To South and north of this broad main ridge composed on E side of same slate, the even of ridge in the hill 9t. seen earlier in morning. It dips W., 45° -70°. Then it passes into sandy slate with a def. of 70° W. which has a thick- ness of 35'. The sandy dol. right below it is about 15' thick. From the tip of the western side of the above ridge it is 200 yards W to the west- erm side of the slate cliff and the two middle hills, the brown ridge extending to make this has other dwell for the dom-dale farms. The eastern side of this ridge is made of grey sandy dol. 25'-30' thick and in places is an interforming incl angle if its an outlier. Below it to east is Jiggate slate with the same form. On the slate above it on eastern side I got two white Optrates. The dip of the sandy dol. is about 20° E. It might be an arch since it flattens to W, but all is eroded away and one cannot measure. Sep 1 - 1933 The below here is comp, Estimate other & ston, The cementing is for lawn to high tur, So about 10' thick. Beneath under electric lawn black. This is not a breccia but one of the regulatue edge some clay due to percolation through surface. The Beneath are 2-3' of Minnequa like this red. The below is truly a true headin dirt. Just at the base of Pomer plants in the lawn 10' is comp, but has one area pieces of the higher mix up to 2' long. The bottom of this layer shows plain its stately character. In other words the thin bedded Minnequin type of beds may tend to be a higher material and started the whole to slide and break up. Sayles photo is in base of the bed and is 2' long. Other Higher rocks are 3' long. Of the Minnequin bottom pieces up to 3' long and 10" thick.

On the S. side here is further gone begining with the edgewise cyls 10' thin W. walls on to 5-6'.

The great breccia bed is a natural crag, but along a new bottom slide invity its clay adjacent plain hitherto material. Other of manner del. with a contact thin ls jetties, mostly thin flakes like those below and above and hitherto ls more up to 11'-1/2 (broken x pics). Or places the three bedded material in wonderfully squeezed about. Beneath the first breccia are distorted thin lithites in a zone 3' thick, the deformation is subsequent to deposition.
