Bartholomew 1941 Itinerary July 22. 3 mi. S Mt. Rose, 8500 ft., Washoe Co., Nevada I came up from Berkeley yesterday on a Greyhound bus and was met by Dr Hall in Reno. Put out 50 mouse traps, all in moist sites along edge of small tributary of Grants creek. Caught 6 ♂ and 4 ♀ Peromyscus maniculatus, 1 ♀ Sorex palustris, 1♂Microtis longicaudus and 1 ♀ Microtus montanus. July 23 Put out 55 mouse traps, 25 in sedge and deep grass along edge of creek and 30 in a grassy upland meadow. Caught 10 ♂ and 6 ♀ Peromyscus maniculatus, 1♂ Microtus montanus This over one. I shot two Citellus bellingsi, and yesterday I shot a ♂Tamiasciurus douglasii. This morning I also shot a marmot (Marmota flaviventris) and a Eutamias speciosus. July 24 6 mi. NE Virginia City, 6000', Storey Co., Nevada Drove from Mt. Rose to Reno to ship some things back to Berkeley and then came out to Virginia City, picked up some mail and drove to this camp. I put out 60 traps on a rocky slope covered with sage brush, Penis monophylla, juniperus, and Ceanothus. Caught 7♂ and 5 ♀ Peromyscus maniculatus, 1 ♀ Reithrodontymy, 1 ♀ Perognathus parvus, and 1♂ Peromyscus truei. I also shot one Eutamias minimus about 6:45 a.m. Late in the afternoon I walked to the top of the ridge east of camp looking for Eutamias panamintinus, but I didn't see a one. July 25 Set out 88 mouse traps in mixed sage and pinnon. Caught 7 ♀ and 8 ♂ Peromyscus maniculatus, one ♀ Dipodomys levicogyps and one Perognathus longimembris (♂)

Bartholomew 1941 Itinerary July 26 middle cr., 8000 ft, White Mts., Esmeralda Co., Nevada We left our camp 6 mi. N & Virginia city at 2:00 pm and drove through Carson City and Yerington to 2 mi. & Hawthorne, Mineral Co., Nevada, 4300 feet where we stopped just at dark and put out our traps after dark. Our camp was in the midst of a flat sandy area on which the only vegetation was scattered thorn brushes. I put out 50 traps and caught 3 Perognathus longimembris (2♀ and 1♂). The small number of animals caught was no doubt due to the rain which fell intermittently all night long and quit shortly before dawn. All three of my animals were soaking wet. At 8:00 a.m. we left camp and drove to Ailemont where we turned east and drove up into the White Mountains. We arrived at our camp at about 10:30 p. a. m. July 27 I set out 70 traps, thirty around the edges of a marshy meadow covered with willows, grass, and wild sedge, Situla fruticellla rose, 10 in a grove of Populus trichocarpa and the rest in mixed sage and pimon on a rocky slope. A creek runs past the meadow and the P. trichocarpa. I caught 11 ♀ and 10 ♂ Peromyscus maniculatus, one Thompsen truei ♀ (immature), and one pocket gopher. After breakfast I walked about three miles east of camp up to an altitude of about 9000 feet looking for deer and Eutamias quadrimaculus, neither of which I found, but I shot one Eutamias minimus. We broke camp at about 1:00 pm and drove over to the old Davis Ranch to look for deer but decided there were none and so headed for Tonopah.

Bartholomew 1946 Itinerary July 28 13 mi. N Goldfield, 5100 ft., Esmeralda Co., Nevada We camped on a sandy flat on which were many small pebbles, up to two inches in diameter. The entire area was flat and covered with a small thorny brush possibly hop sage. The plants were scattered widely, probably one brush for every 20 square feet. We arrived after dark and set our traps out. I put out 50 mouse traps in a straight line, one every twenty paces. My catch was 2♀ Dipodomys microps, 1♂ Bex Dipodomys deserti, 4♂ Perognathus longimembris, 3♂ Perognathus longimembris. We ate breakfast and left immediately. At noon we drove to West side of Stonewall Mountain 6000 ft., Nye Co., Nevada and hunted chipmunks. I didn't get any, but 3 Eutamias panamintinus were gotten by other members of the group. We drove in to Beatty and then drove back up to 3½ mi. E and 1½ mi. S Grapevine Peak, 6700 feet Nye Co., Nevada where we pitched camp. July 29 3½ mi E and 1 mi. S Grapevine Peak, 6700 ft. Nye Co., Nev. I cooked and spent the morning skinning the animals I got yesterday. During the afternoon unsuccessfully hunting for deer. I won't describe this locality because groups from Museum have been here on two previous trips. July 31 9 mi W + 5½ mi. S Searchlight, Clark Co., Nevada, 4300 ft. Yesterday morning we left our camp at Grapevine Peak and drove to Las Vegas where we had lunch and then went on to Searchlight. From Searchlight we followed

Bartholomew Itinerary 9 mi. W + 5 1/2 mi. S Searchlight, 4300 ft., Clark Co., Nevada an old abandoned railroad to our present camp. After dinner I went out hunting and shot two Dipodomys mohavensis with the aid of a flashlight. I set out one hundred mouse traps on the first flat above a wash. The area is covered with a good stand of Joshua trees, Yucca mohavensis, catclaw and scattered clumps of dry grass. I caught 3 ♀ and 3 ♂ Dipodomys merriami, 2 ♀ + 2 ♂ Dipodomys mohavensis, 1 ♀ Onychomys torridus, and 3 ♂ + 1 ♀ Peromyscus maniculatus. Aug. 1 W side Colorado R., 6 mi. N Calif. line, 500 ft., Clark Co., Nevada Yesterday we broke camp about 1:00 p.m. and drove south on U.S. 95 to the old government road to Fort Mohave and drove on it down to the Colorado River. We are camped on the flood plain of the river between the willows and the desert. I set out 100 traps (95 mouse + 4 rat traps). The mouse traps were set among creosote bushes either along sandy washes or on the rock ridges, and a few were set along the edge of the willows on the edge of the flood plain. My catch was 2 ♀♂ Peromyscus eremicus, 15 ♀ and 8 ♂ Dipodomys merriami, 8 ♀ and 8 ♂ Perognathus parvus. Total 41 mice. When I went down to the river Red Stone and I saw a Bampiseltis getulus which we caught. I also caught 3 toads, presumably Scaphopus. Aug. 2 Red Stone and I took the truck and drove to W side Colorado R., 450 ft., 1 mi. N Calif line, Clark Co., Nevada trying and catch Perognathus longimembris. I set out 89 mouse

Bartholomew 1941 Itinerary Aug 2 W side Colorado R., 500 ft., 6 mi. N. Calif line, Clark Co., Nevada mouse traps in the sand and fine gravel in the bottom of a large wash. I caught 18 ♂ + 13 ♀ Dipodomys merriami, 4 ♀ and 5 ♂ Perognathus formosus and 1 ♂ Perognathus penicillatus (?). After lunch we drove to 3 mi. S W Hicks Springs, 2400 ft., Clark Co., Nevada to look for bats. We camped beside a small trickle of water. I shot no bats, but other members of the group Got a few Pipistrellus. D.H. Johnson, and Ned Stone took the truck out to near Searchlight to look for P. longimembris. Aug 4 At noon yesterday we left camp and drove to 2 mi. E Horman, 3500 ft., Los Angeles Co., Calif. via Victorville. On Aug 3 I set out no traps. Last night I set out 5-8 mouse traps on a grassy hill side and along the side of a small stream. Perhaps because of the strong wind blowing trapping was very poor. I caught only one ♀ Dipodomys gayensis and one ♂ Plecomyopus maniculatus. We are now preparing to leave for Berkeley and do not expect to do any more trapping. We drove to Berkeley up the west side of the San Joaquin Valley via Taft, Coalinga, Los Banos, Tracy and Livermore. We arrived in Berkeley about 5:50 p.m.

Battholomew 1941 Sores palustrius July 22 3 mi. S Mt.Rose, 8600 ft., Washoe Co., Nevada ?52 was caught about 8 inches from edge of a swiftly flowing stream approximately four feet wide and 8 to 10 inches deep. Trap was a museum special mousetrap baited with oat meal and placed in short grass (green) underneath an elder berry bush. 50 traps were set out along the edge of this same stream, but no other shrews were caught. The traps on either side of the one in which the S. palustrius was caught, caught micrositis longicaudus.

Bartholomew 1941 Eutamias minimus July 24, 6 mi NE Virginia City, 6000 ft, Storey Co., Nevada ♂ 66 was shot after running across an open space for about twenty feet from a clump of sage and dodging in under the low-hanging branches of Pinus monophylla. The area is covered with sage and numerous pinions and junipers. July 27, Middle Cr., 8000 ft, White Ints., Esmeralda Co., Nevada Our camp was on edge of marsh meadow in a canyon both sides of which were rocky and covered by sage brush and Pinus monophylla. The most abundant mammal in the sage and pinion was E. minimus. One could often see three or four at one time. Running from one sage brush to the next. Scattered through the sage were clumps of Ephedra and cholla. None of the chipmunks came down in the marsh or in the beds (Betula fontanella, willows), or Populus trichocarpa along the stream. I shot one, ♂ 77.

Bartholomew 1941 Eutamias speciosus July 23 3 mi. S Mt. Rose, 8500 ft, Washoe Co., Nevada About 9:30 a.m. I shot a ♂ (57) which was running along a down log on the top of a outcrop of granite on which one marmot and a number of marmot holes were seen.

Bartholomew 1941 Sciurus douglasii quercus July 22. 3 mi S Mt. Rose, 8500 ft., Washoe Co., Nevada At approximately 3:50 p.m. I shot one ♂ (5'5') which was digging in the decayed wood in the heart of a fallen yellow pine which was hollow. The fallen tree lay at the base of a slope covered with granite boulders. I spent 2½ hours within a quarter of a mile of this spot and this was the only squirrel seen.

Bartholomew 1941 Thoronaya bottae July 27 Middle Cr, 8000 ft, White Mts, Esmeralda Co, Nevada No. 16 ♀ was caught in a mousetrap placed on the edge of a marshy meadow on fallen leaves underneath Populus trichocarpa. There were no gopher diggings which could be found within a radius of 30 feet. The only moist area was of course along the stream. The sides of the canyon are rocky and covered with sagebrush and Pinus monophylla and occasional ephedra.

Bartholomew 1941 Perognathus parvus July 24 6 mi N E Virginia City, 6000 ft, Storey Co., Nevada a ♂, number 62, was caught at the side of a round rock about 18 inches in diameter in the midst of a bare area about 8 feet across. This area was surrounded by sage in which was scattered many Pinus monophylla, juniper and occasional Ceanothus. I had 60 traps out and this was the only pocket mouse caught. July 25 Single immature specimen (♂ 68) was caught in an open sandy spot beneath a rock in the midst of sage brush and pinion. This was only one caught although I had out 88 traps.

Bartholomew 1941 Dipodomys deserti. July 28 13 mi. N Goldfield, 5100 ft., Esmeralda co., Nevada. I set out 50 mouse traps at 20 step intervals on a level sandy area covered with hopsage (?) and pebbles up to three inches in diameter. I caught about a dozen P. longimembrio, a couple D. merriops and one D. deserti (immature). None of the other members of the party who set out a total of 200 traps caught any of this species. About 1/2 miles from the spot where I set out my traps, in the bottom of the sinka there was an area of fine sand. This immature animal may have wandered out from there for the pebbles made the site atypical for Dipodomys deserti.

Bartholomew 1941 Dipodomys mohavensis July 31 9 mi. W and 3 1/2 mi. S Searchlight, 4300 ft., Clark Co., Nevada Out of 100 traps set out in the first flat above a dry wash covered with Yucca mohavensis, Yucca brevifolia, catclaw and scattered clumps of dry grass I caught 2 ♀ and 2 ♂ D. mohavensis.

Bartholomew 1941 Peromyscus truei July 24 6 mi. NE Virginia City, 6000 ft., Storey Co., Nevada male 65 was caught on the top of rock on isolated rock about 40 inches high and 24 inches in diameter beside a Pinus monophylla. The county is mixed sage and piñon. July 27 Middle Cr., 8000 ft., White Mts., Esmeralda Co., Nevada I set out fifty traps, 20 in a marshy meadow and the rest on a steep rocky slope of mixed piñon and sage I caught out one immature P. truei (915) in the rocks. Only other mouse caught in vicinity was P. maniculatus.

Bartholomew 1941 Microtus longicaudus July 22 3 mi. S Mt. Rose, 8500 ft., Washoe Co., Nevada Two (numbers 53 & 54) were caught in traps ten feet apart. Both were placed in short green grass about a foot from the edge of a swiftly flowing stream about four feet wide and 8 to 10 inches deep. Traps were both placed beneath elder berry bushes. The trap between the two which caught the Microtus caught a Sorex palustris. July 23. A single specimen (56) was caught in a trap set on top of moist sand a yard below an overhanging rock which was situated in the midst of a moist almost marshy meadow covered with sedge, grass, Yerathrum, and elder berry. 9 other traps were set out in same site, but only P. maniculatus were caught. July 27: Middle Cr., 8000 ft., White Mts., Esmeralda Co., Nevada While hunting for deer I crossed Middle Creek and in a thicket of gooseberry underneath some Betula fontanella I saw a M. longicaudus climbing in the gooseberry brush about 3 feet from the ground (time 8:30 a.m). I backed up and shot him. My presence and my movements seemed not to frighten him.
