Notes. Quail A 409.976. Shin bid had probably been banded before, as the shin of the right leg, where band wound be attached, was torn and bleeding. Space affected was just size that would have been covered by a band, which must only recently have been pulled off in some manner. I attached A 409.976 to left leg. Juneo 641.839, replacing F73.388. Original band had cut into bird's leg, almost severing it. I cut the foot off and replaced the new band on the left leg. The bird showed not the slightest indication of pain, and flew away, when released, in lively fashion. Two stumps, where foot was cut off, bled a little. Banded 2/29 32. Repeated 3/7 32. A 274326 Band lost. Fox Sparrow A 181213 replacing A 180917. When trapped on March 15, the right leg, under and below band was badly swollen, although had been correctly attached - not over- expanding. I removed the old band, and placed the new one on the left leg (see note page) Golden-crowned Sparrow F22807 A 180901. When I trapped this sparrow March 30 32, I was astonished to find two of my bands on it - the former on the left leg, the second on the right. 240 244. Dwail A409982-A409983 While kept in the box in the N.B.S.A. Office in M.V.9., those two quail bent their heads bodily against the wire on the box. In fact the female A 409983 had a large part of her skull laid completely bare. It is defeated in some traps, 4/28, close to point where they were released, and except for their battered heads, they seemed to be perfectly healthy. Forbush Sparrow b 4/1902. Banded at B, 4/28 32. Thin in the latest date on which one of these sparrows has been recorded in this part of the State. Song Sparrows b 4/1903-4-5. were caught at one time in a government sparrow trap. They were, apparently, barely old enough to fly. The mother bird fluttered around, protesting shrilly, while I banded them. Golden-crowned Sparrows A 181266 A 181267, A 181235 A 181237. These were placed on day last trapped in cage for daily weighing. Were weighed 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. for 35 days; then once a day at 1 p.m. for 25 days. On June 19 Dr. Lowdale killed and served them. A 181266 and A 181237 were females. A 181267 and A 181235 were males. San Francisco Towhee A 274368. Found dying in cage at 1 P.M. on 9/8/31 - apparently drowned by heat. Fox Sparrow A 181358 Snapped 9 a.m. in government sparrow traps. Weighed a few minutes later in a building about 1000 ft. west, where it was released. Repeated same day at 5:30 P.M. in same trap.

245 Golden-crowned Sparrows. Those indicated by A were confined in a large cage in the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology from date of last capture until date released, as shown in red ink. Ten birds with red bands on left leg, were released June 12, 2:30 P.M., on north side of Life Sciences Bldg. Sixteen more birds (no red bands) were released the same day at 5 P.M. at the Botanical Gardens. B means Botanical Gardens. C means Campus (north of Life Sciences Bldg.) (all in 1932). The birds released on campus hung around for some hours; at least five more seen close to where released at 7:30 the same evening. Not one has been observed since to this date (June 17) either on campus or at Botanical Gardens. A° means released on road in Strawberry Canyon, about 300 ft. south-west of Swimming Pool. Thirteen birds with red bands (except 1 yellow) released July 22d, 11:10 a.m. on north side of Life Sciences Bldg. Regarding A/18/215, A/18/223, A/18/231, A/18/226: I know that two birds escaped from cage on June 12, and two others must have done so without my knowledge. Juvail A 437932, A 438981, A 438982, A 438983, A 438968, A 437933, A 438465, all caught 9/16/32 at one time in government trap. Juvail A 438984-85. Babies with brown plumage; probably about 3 months old. Juvile A 438928 and 528236 & caught 11/10/32 in same trap. Will they continue to stay together? Mr. Summer: The following regarding the Junco. C. 4/1945 - probably a B and probably pinorus but not typical, however. I think it likely that it was raised locally but it might have come from the coast across the bay. Still held captive. 89524 F the captive I have had for a yr is pinorus C 4/1948 B? similar to 4/1945 - a typical pinorus - immature. Probably raised locally. Died in cage Sept. 3, 1932. Skin preserved C 4/1929 B typical pinorus - the one you trapped as early as July 29, and liberating this bird for possible further returns since it has repeated several times. 249 1930 Gambel Sparrow 6/10/280. This was brought into M.V. 9. in apparently a dying condition, by a boy who had saved it from other boys who were about to kill it. Was lively when released 11/7 '32 at S. Men-tit 91519. This bird is now at least 8½ yrs. old. Snapped 12/3 '32 in same compartment of M.B.S. a two-compartment cage with Fox Sparrow 6/16/138 Sharp-shinned Hawk which killed quite a number of birds in my traps, was captured by me 12/7 '32 in a pole trap. I killed it - gave to museum. Men-tit 689428. While this bird was in my gathering cage, it repeatedly gave its call (or song). Not the one with the bill, but what Mary Brichton thinks is the female calling the male. There was another men-tit close by in the brush, by the trap which 689428 was caught. Men-tit 91519 Repeated again 2/14 '33 in same location. Band still in perfect condition, Mary Brichton attacked two B.S. red celluloid bands, to right leg, one above and one below the B.S. band. I then released it close to where it was trapped. Weight 14.9 gm. Fox Sparrow 6/16/138. Right leg recently cut off. Blood on feathers. Band placed on left leg. Nicaragua Jay 5-88913. Repeated at B 3/8 '33, a small dell was attached to the band, by a fine copper wire, and the jay was liberated an hour later at C.S. Bldg. (See P. 250)

This bird referred to by Ritter and Benson at meeting of Boston Ornithological Club on Oct. 27 '31. See Condor, Vol. XXV. Jan.-Fely, 1933, Page 48. Breden-crown Sparrow A/80147-B/61268 and Sharsher A411677. These birds were found dead in traps 3/3 '33, after traps had been closed for four days. Traps were upside down, or otherwise arranged, so that I had believed that no birds could be caught in them. Nuttall Sparrow. B101379. Caught in government sparrow traps with several other birds. Exposed to heavy rain for not more than half an hour (3/14 '33 about 4:30 p.m.) The other birds were also chilled but recovered. This bird died in spite of my drying and warming it. Only lived about half an hour. Fox Sparrow B161318 (See P. 249) Repeated 3/19 '33. apparently in perfect health. See P. 252. Nicrosia Jay 588913. (See P. 249) Repeated 3/21 9 a.m. in same trap in which it was caught 3/14 at B. The bell was broken (Leigh bell variety) to that only shell remained. 251 Wron-tit 689966. Mary Brichton and I had both noticed that the new Wron-tits we had recently caught appeared smaller and seemed to weigh less than the old repeats. I brought this one in. She weighed it, and it was much lighter 9.5 gm. than any she had ever weighed died in cage Golden-crowned Sparrow 6102022. Trapped 4/2/33 8:45 a.m. at S. Weighed at B at 9 a.m. and released. Repeated at B within two minutes in a trap about 300 ft. from place where weighed and released. Repeated again in same trap 5:45 p.m. same day. H 4/6/33 The following Golden-crowned Sparrows were trapped in Shmokeley Canon, 4/5/33, kept in cage all day at my apartment (that is after they were caught at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.) also all of 4/5. Evening of 4/5 they were put into a large paper carton with holes tied in sides, and mosquitos settling over part of top; given food and water. Left Berkeley with them at 5:30 a.m. 4/6. Arrived in K.A. same day at 4:50 p.m., when I released them in a little canon by the side of Hollywood Way, at foot of Bahmenga Peak, Plenty of oaks, shrubs, grass and water in vicinity. 240 252. James 689990. Breeding male finch. Captured by Alden Miller 4/5/33 in one section of aviary at Poultry Lab. grounds, as it tried to drive away the finches in another section. Kept in captivity with a female in same aviary. S.L. 6/16/1330 4/23/33. This bird still in so-called immature plumage - no trace of flush lines on head. 5/3/33 now Y.H. Golden-crowned 6/16/1120. Left by badly broken near body. Bird trapped twice today (4/25/33) but did not seem ill- flew vigorously both times it was released. Nicasio Jay 588413 (See Page 250) This jay has had another adventure. Caught by the tree near Antonio Gardens April 12 1933 by Miss Alice Mulford in a rat trap. Released apparently uninjured. For Sparrow 6/16/1318 (also see Pages 249-250.) There is no previous record of any Fox Sparrow being seen in this vicinity as late as this in the spring-May 14 1933. Can the loss of a part of its leg have anything to do with its late stay? The bird is plump and healthy and has been gaining in weight recently. Dr. Olinnell as Lincoln. Golden-crowned Sparrow 6/16/1233 May 14 1933. Patent on record for California. Previous record May 12. Brought bird to museum and showed it to Dr. Olinnell. I find that a S.C. has been seen in California as late as May 24th, but this was a crippled bird, and so is not counted as a record. — Later, Mrs. Edwin J. Blake trapped a S.C. 5/18/33, so that my record didn't last long. Fox Sparrow 6/16/318. May 16 '33. Killed in trap by some animal. When it 91519. (See Page 249) Mary Erickson saw this bird this morning, May 22d. 1933, near swimming pool, in Strawberry Canon, close to where it has always been trapped. Now at least nine years old. Golden-crowned Sparrow. Prior to Nov. 1 1933 it was assumed by me that all Golden-crowned Sparrows reaching California were adult. Beginning Nov. 1 1933, only those birds in full adult plumage are entered as an adult. Sharp-shinned Hawk. On Nov. 6 1933, about 1 P.M., while kneeling beside a government sparrow trap containing 4 Nuttall Sparrows, in company with Miss Alice Mulford, a Sharp-shinned Hawk swooped past, close to the trap, and only about 2 feet from my head. 1933, while going the rounds of my traps, in company with Miss Alice Dufford, we found a garter snake frantically in and out of a S.B.B.A. 2-compartment trap (no buttons). The snake had chilled and was trying to swallow a Golden-crowned Sparrow. It had taken hold of the bird by the bend of one wing, but only a small portion of the wing was in the snake's mouth. I released the snake, which was about 20" long, and it glided away in the brush. This was about 1 P.M. About 4:30 P.M., the same day, while alone, I found in a government spanner trap about 75 ft. from the other traps, the same snake, or one of the same size, which had chilled another Golden- crowned Sparrow, and was trying to swallow it in the same manner. I killed the snake. Both traps were just outside of the Botanical Gardens, up the hill, the other side of the wire fence.

The first time I have trapped a wren in any trap but a govern- ment sparrow trap. In other compartment of trap was Nuttall Sparrow L43532.

Twenty-eight Golden-crowned Sparrows trapped at U. of C. Botanical Gardens, Strawberry Canyon, on Nov. 7, 8, 9, 1933. Kept in small cages in the Life Sciences Bulding on the campus until morning of Nov. 10. They were then placed in paper cartons covered with mosquito netting, and were driven in my car to a point on the right bank of the North Fork of the Calavera$ River, in Calaveras Co., Calif., about 2 miles south of San Andreas. This is at an elevation of about 1000 ft., and is about 84 miles a little north of eastk from Berkeley. There, in com- pany with Mary Erickson I released the birds, which immediately flew across the river to trees on the opposite bank. There are grass-covered hills on each side of the river, dotted with oaks and pines; in the river bottom are willows, and near by sycamores and other trees.
