Notes. Fox Sparrow B/35.586, trapped and banded Jan 13th. Was somewhat bruised above base of bill. Has repeated 10 times to 1/20'31 and each time I have noticed that a mottled growth had appeared between eyes and base of bill. Measured growth today(2/29) which had extended from base partly over top of kilo. Growth measured 3/4" wide by 1/2" top to bottom. Bird was lively, and appeared to be otherwise perfectly healthy. Released it at 3:15 P.M. from south window of Life Sciences Bldg. It immediately flew to an oak tree, where I lost sight of it. Eastern Fox Sparrow. B/35.626, trapped and banded in Strawberry Basin 2/18'31. Took it to Life Sciences Building, where identifi- cation was confirmed by Joseph Simmons and J.M. Lindsdale. Released at point where trapped. Repeated 22 times. Part trapped March 6th. Fox Sparrows. When I went on trip 2/14'31, I closed government sparrow traps by stuffing newspapers into outside funnel entrance. Upon visiting one of these traps on return to Berkeley, 2/14 A.M., I was sur- prised to find three Fox Sparrows in the inner compartment. Before leaving I had scattered grain all around the trap. The birds had scratched so much that they dug a hole under

the bottom edge of the side wire, and to entered. Bush rabbit caught in government Shannon trap Feb. 25-46 1931. Was in inner chamber. Fox Sparrow B/135,593. Repeated 2/25'31. Marked growth above base of bill, similar to B/135,584 but not so large. Spotted Towhee A 267,664. Captured 2/19 '31. This bird, instead of uttering the cooing cry which many Spotted Towhees give, when approaching the trap, and when re- leased, gave its regular song "free", with the suggestion of an I, 3 times. Fox Sparrow, B/135,594, identified by J. M. Friedels 2/19 '31, as an Alberta, Passerella iliaca alti- vagans. Fox Sparrow B/135,609. Repeat 2/26; same as B/135,593 Spotted Towhee A 267,635. Found dead 2/25'31 by Miss Josephine Smith, 51 Canyon Rd. Marked growth on forehead. Fox Sparrows. They birds almost always chirps 3 times or 4 times when released after being fondled. The Eastern Fox Sparrow B/135,626, usually chirps once—the chirp is louder and of a different quality from that of the others. Fox Sparrow 470,113. Captured in Strawberry 11/4 '30. Released 11/4 at N. of b. experiment garden, Oxford and Virginia. Repeated in front of M. O. Z. 2/27 '31, 2d. clog trap was placed in that location.

California Plain Titmouse F22838 was caught in a Pattee trap. F17,738 was caught in a government Harrow trap; both on the ground, among bushes. F17,738, when I approached the trap, repeatedly uttered his (or her) "tseck-a-dee- de" cry; when released, flew into a bush close by, and seemed to scold me loudly with the same cry. F17,750 caught in a Pattee trap under buckthorn; while in the trap another Titmouse, presumably its mate, was fluttering about in a brush close by, and uttering its "tseckadee" cry. When I released the trapped bird, both flew away. Bonded by Elabangh Strawberry Canyon 9/6/25. Repeated 1/3/16. Dwarf Helmet Shrub A3281 Found dead by the side of road, near Poultry Station, 3/12/31. Strawberry Canyon. Had been dead about 3 days. Either killed by some animal, or else had been chewed after death. [illegible]. See Page 64. April 8th '31, began baiting trap N exclusively with hulled barley.

California Plain Sitarwood F17,750. This bird was caught 4/8 '31, by Miss Natasha Smith, A U. of C. student, as the bird came from its nest; she released it. Next found 4/13. Song Sparrow 6 4/12 5/6 '31. This bird has repeated 9 times, so far this month, at three trips, all within a radius of about 100 yds. Only two other song sparrows have been traffied since March 18th, and only one of them repeated. Why this one so often? Song Sparrow, F17,759. Found dead in a Potter trap, apparently by a gated traps. At the same time 6 4/12 5/6 '31 was in another compartment, continued. Shuttled Jorkee A275.535. Caught in a Potter trap. Sail feathers all pulled out and scattered in front of trap. Bird lying on ground, inside trap. I thought at first it was dead. When I picked it up, could find no injury, but it squealed loudly as if in pain. I handed it, and released it; did not fly away, but walked off into the Busher. Was it merely nearly frightened to death? And what in- fired it? An apparent manner in which an animal could have entered the cage trap, and a cat would have knocked the trap over. This bird found a few minutes after finding Song Sparrow dead F17, 759 dead in another trap about 150 ft away.

May 11th 1931. Caught a young opossum in a government shannon trap, this morning. Was apparently about half grown. Released it in a few hours. The 'possum didn't seem to be much afraid of me. Have also caught recently a bush rabbit and a wood rat in the same trap. May 14 1931 Caught a small possum today in a Pattel trap. Very young- apparently only a few weeks old. Gave it to Beth Benson. May 19 '31. S.F. Sprnted Fnrhee A267.640, trapped Jan. 21 '31; repeated for first time 5/19 '31; location of repeat 1/5 mile further down the canon. July 22 '31 Brown Fnrhee A275.575. Snrp was in the sun, which was very warm. Bird seemed almost overcome with the heat. When released it walked slowly away, about 6 feet from me, and stood in a shady place, with its fell open. Remained there while I re-debated the trap, and was still there when I left (10/17 '31 /repeated in good condition) July 27 '31 Brown Fnrhee A237638- head bloody- captured in a government shannon trap. When I approached, and while handling, constantly gave its alarm cry, while two other Brown Fnrhee and an immature Black-headed Burstshead flew meanwhile from branch to branch in neighboring trees, all giving their alarm cries.

July 30 '31 Spratled Forhee A237, 636. Found their turkeys in a M.B.R.a. two-compartment trap at 8:30A.M. It had evidently been attacked during the night by some animal. The hind trest on [illegible] foot was were bitten off, and the tail feathers were all pulled out. The bird was in fair condition, when released, and ran off into the bushes. Aug. 5 '31. Spratled Forhee 72004. Large soft growth around eyelid and right side of head. Seemed stringy, and I pulled off small pieces. Lighter in color, and totally different from the growths previously observed [See Aug. 27] Aug 8 '31. Song Sparrow F19, 765. Noticed today that about 1/2 of upper bill is gone. Bird is plump and healthy. Aug 8 '31. Thrasher A 391, 536. When I found the bird it screamed vigorously. Another thrasher could be seen running around on the ground, under the busher, screaming and scolding. August 10 '31. Song Sparrow F31,109 - found lying in trap at 8:30A.M., with dive on neck. I'm barely breathing. I released it, held it in my hand for several minutes, while it gasped for breath. Seemed weak, but was strong enough to sit in a branch, when I left it. Aug 11 '31 Song Sparrow F31,109 - repeated in same trap- apparently in perfect health. Aug 13 '31 Quail A409,048. This little quail was about the size of a 10 day domestic chicken. It squealed loudly while being handled, and an adult male and female ran about under the bushes, sometimes to within 10 ft. of me, uttering alarm cries. Aug 14 '31 Quail A409,048 - A409,053 incl., all caught at one time in a government framework trap. All about size of a 10 day domestic chick. All squealed, and the two old birds acted as above.

Aug. 18 '31 Junco A 409.050 and A 409.054- A 409.059, incl. Actions of old and young birds same as described 8/13 and 8/14. These juncos all trapped in same location as A 409049- A 409.053. It will be noticed that A 409.050 repeated today at same time and in same trap that caught A 409.054-59. Do flocks of young juncos become mixed? Point Pinos Junco, F31007, banded August 15th 1931 at residence of F. Somers Peterson, Golf Tract, San Rafael, Calif. According to Mrs. Susan E. Van Zandt, governess in the Peterson family, who first called my attention to this bird, it was originally snow white--an albino except for the eyes, which were always black. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson corroborate this statement. At present (Aug. 15th--the bird was off the nest about July 10th, in company with another young of normal color) the bird is a very light bluish gray, and in some lights it appears to be almost silvery in color. It is a trifle dark- er on the back than underneath; on the upper part of the breast, on each side, is the very slightest suggestion of brown. The bill is pinkish gray. There are no indications that the bird is moulting, excepting on the crown of the head, where new feathers are appearing. These feathers are as light as those on the rest of the head. The quills of the feathers, on the upper side, seem to be the same color as the feathers; the under side of the same quills is decidedly darker. The two outer tail feathers are pure white. According to Mrs. Van Zandt the bird has not moulted. The plumage does not appear to be dirty, and aside from ordinary light colored dust, it does not appear where dirt could have been acquired. This Junco is now confined by Mrs. Van Z. in a small aviary. According to Mrs. VanZandt, this bird, while the parents were feeding it, was much better nourished, and received more attention than the normal one of the same brood.

August 27 '31 Sprutted Farhee 72004 (See Aug 5'th) Died about 8/15. Saw Dr. S.F. Michael of the Division of Veterinary Science, N.of.B. on the 7th. for observation. He reported Aug 27'th. "Postmortem and bacterio- logical examinations revealed mycotic infection, cased by Serus aspergillus. A large abscess was found affecting the left lung and the air sack. Lymphs around the beaks were inoculated into a normal pigeon and chicken, as they were unremarkable suspicious of fowl legions. However, those birds were negative. It is very possible that these legions may also be caused by the mycotic infection." August 31 '31. Sprutted Farhee A237.643 - gave Dr. Michael to be inoculated from culture of 72004, but it died Soft. 2d. Juvail A409008, A409049, A409053, A409054. Found these dead in a government sparrow trap Oct.20.31, together with a house cat that had gone wild. The cat was killed by myself and another. Content Fox Sparrow A180,546. Identification confirmed by Jean M. Rindsdale and Alden H. Miller. Fox Sparrow, B154961 found in government sparrow trap with two more Fox Sparrows on morning of 10/21/31. The others were lively; this one appeared comatose. Was crouched on bottom of cage. When released flew to a locachair branch, only 2ft. away; packed there with its head under its wing, paying no attention to me. I left it in that position. Spotted Towhee A290,861. Cared Dr. Michael 10/12. He inoculated it with culture from A290,824. Result negative, but bird died 10/25. Red-shafted Flicker A391,544. While being handled the bird screamed loudly and continuously, and the noise soon attracted several California Jays, which also kept up a continuous screaming. Galden-crowned Sparrow A180,802. Caught in a Butler trap, with A180,803 in next compartment. When I arrived, a garter snake was partly in the trap, making desperate efforts to catch A180,802. The birds were fluttering about, but gave no evidence of any deadly fear. Threw the snake away, and both birds appeared to be quite normal, as I handled them, and flew away in a normal manner when released

Fox Sparrow B154, 947 Repeated 11/6 9a.m. Found it five minutes later in another trap about 100 feet distant. Quail 528229, A409014. Repeated 5/6. Left in a cage until about 10 p.m. 5/8, when they were released near point where they were trapped. Were carried in car to quail station near Menlo Park, on 8th, but were not removed from cage. Brought back same day. A409014 had [illegible] layed an egg in cage, when found in cage morning of 9th.
