UPTON, MAINE
1847
August 28
I was born in the town of Upton, Maine, in the year 1805. My father was a farmer, and my mother was a school-teacher. I have two brothers and one sister.
When I was six years old, I began to attend school. The first teacher was Mr. John Smith, who taught me the alphabet and numbers. After he left, Mrs. Jane Doe took over as my instructor.
In 1815, at the age of ten, I moved to Portland with my family. There, I continued my education under Miss Mary Brown, who ran a small private school.
At sixteen, I enrolled in the Maine State College in Augusta. My major was agriculture, and I graduated with honors in 1823.
After graduation, I returned home to help on the farm. However, within two years, I decided to pursue a career in teaching. I opened a schoolhouse in Upton and taught until 1827.
In 1828, I married Sarah Miller, a young woman from nearby Lisbon. We had three children: John, Mary, and James.
Throughout my life, I remained deeply involved in community affairs. I served as a town selectman for several years and was also active in the local church.
My health began to decline around 1845. In the fall of that year, I retired from teaching and moved to a small cabin near the river.
I passed away peacefully on March 15, 1847, at the age of forty-two. My wife Sarah survived me by five years.
