1873 January 13 - January 13 Aurora is clear and rather warm. After breakfast had a horse ride up the river. O. C. quitted and started up the skiff and rode over to the island, which he did not reach until evening. The morning was lovely and birds were singing. Mr. Godwin said they were very much in need of a good meal. It is now time for us to go home. We shall leave here tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock sharp. A short distance from the river we found a small cabin where we stopped to rest. The owner was very kind and offered us refreshments. We spent the afternoon exploring the woods, which were full of wild animals. The scenery was beautiful and we enjoyed ourselves greatly. In the evening we returned to our campsite and prepared for another night's journey. We had a good fire and slept soundly until morning. On the second day we continued our journey along the river bank, passing many interesting sights. The weather remained fine throughout our trip. We reached our destination on the third day after traveling over thirty miles. Our guide was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Our stay here was pleasant and memorable. We will definitely return again if given the opportunity.
