UPTON, MAINE 1872 August 26 - 27 Aurora St. & C.O. Ferris had looo .jnasalq bua Cambridg river revis and a small boat of theirs. They were fishing for trout and saw a great many fish jumping out of the water. They also saw a large number of ducks and geese flying over the pond. While in this part of Maine they felt fully as much at home as if they had been in their own yard. They had to make the best of it, so taking off their shoes and stockings they waded through the water to get across the river. After a while they found themselves in a small boat which was rowed by two men who were not very strong but seemed to know what they were about. The boatman told them that he had been born and raised in this part of Maine and knew all about the rivers and lakes there. They asked him if he could take them somewhere else and he said yes, but only for a short distance. So they got into the boat and started down the river again. As they went along they saw many different kinds of fish swimming around them. Some were very small while others were quite large. One day they came upon a group of seals playing in the water. The men said that these seals lived all year round in this part of Maine and were never seen anywhere else. They watched them for quite some time before finally deciding to leave them alone and continue their journey. After traveling for several hours they arrived at a small island where there was a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. They decided to stay here for a few days and enjoy the scenery while waiting for better weather conditions. During this time they met many other people who also enjoyed being outdoors and talking about nature. One evening as they sat by the fire watching the flames dance above them, one person asked another if he believed in ghosts or spirits. The first man replied that he did not believe in such things but thought it was possible that some people might experience strange occurrences due to natural causes rather than supernatural ones. He explained that many times when people feel scared or confused they may interpret normal events as something frightening or mysterious. However, he also admitted that there could be certain places where unusual phenomena occur more frequently than usual. In any case, he believed it was important not to let fear control our thoughts and actions but instead approach life with curiosity and openness towards whatever mysteries may exist within us all.
