July 27
Lake Umbagog, Upton, Maine
1874
Jul 24 - July 27
July 24. Clear. Fine and pleasant weather. No fishing on the lake today; it is still too cold.
Hester and her son went to the lake and fished all day. They returned in the evening, tired but happy.
I saw Hester through the window of my bedroom as she came home from the lake. She looked exhausted but content.
July 25. Clear. Very warm in the afternoon, but cold breeze in the morning.
Unpacked my things in the afternoon, and sat down to read a book. The sun was shining brightly, casting long shadows across the room.
Clerk had too heavy load to bring to dinner; I took his books and we cooked together. He was quite tired from carrying so much.
After dinner, we went for a walk in the woods. It was lovely to breathe fresh air after being cooped up inside all day.
The young birds chirped cheerfully as they flew around us, their bright colors contrasting beautifully with the green leaves.
I longed for my dear old home once again, where three deer had been seen running freely through the forest.
However, I killed one of them, which gave me a fine double shot. The other bird escaped, flying high into the sky.
The young birds flew off with their chirping songs, leaving only silence behind. It felt peaceful yet slightly melancholic.

July 26. Clear and pleasant weather again. A nice breeze kept things cool despite the warm sun.
Appointed M.P. to take charge of the housekeeping duties for the day. He seemed eager to help out around the farm.
Shot a tom cat near the road; it was quite a surprise given its proximity to our dwelling. Fortunately, no damage was done.
Tumbled down some stairs while trying to catch the cat. Fortunately, I managed to land safely without any injury.
The rest of the afternoon was spent reading and reflecting on recent events. Time seemed to pass slowly as thoughts wandered aimlessly through memory lane.
July 27. Cloudy but not unpleasantly so. Morning brought mild temperatures suitable for outdoor activities.
Started preparing breakfast early in the morning, hoping to avoid rushing later when guests arrived unexpectedly.
With Sergeant "Julius" and his men turning up unexpectedly, we had little choice but to adapt quickly.
