Information Regarding Specimen Catalogue of Thomas J. Larson (Aitkin, Minn., U.S.A.) The following Catalogue of Tom Larson's African Collection is a proof-read copy of his original catalogue, which was not made up on M.V.Z. paper nor in the M.V.Z. style. Numbers 230 through 1542 (i.e., pages 1 thru 57) were copied by Tom Larson and sent to M.V.Z. It was noted that in some cases Larson added some information in the copy which did not occur in the original; at other times he frequently omitted information from the copy, primarily natural history observations, which was present in the original. Therefore: Larson's copy was proof-read against the original at M.V.Z. in Aug. 1951 by J. Cleveraid and P. Bloedel. It was our goal to accurately make the copy identical to the original as possible. Consequently, we added to the copy that additional information found in the original (including in many cases changes & errors as originally recorded and altered); we did not delete anything added by Larson; and, in many cases we added within brackets certain locality data and comments, known to be right but not stated in total by Larson either in the original or the copy. Note: Tom Larson's numbers 1 through 98 and new series numbers 1 through 227 were collected by him in Guatemala, Central America between Mar. 24, 1946 and July 20, 1946. The numbers 228 and 229 were collected and prepared at M.V.Z., Berkeley, Calif. in 1947. All are recorded in the same original catalogue by African specimens. Note 2: the front cover of Larson's original catalogue bears the following statements: "Field Journal of Mammals of E.E. Peters, Guatemala" "Mar. 24, 1946 - August 1946; ... "South" African Expedition, August 1947-July 1948." "Actually, these collections were made in 1948 but in 1951 (see)... (over)

Tom Larson Klipfontein, Am. N.W. Stein Kopf, Namaqualand July 16 broad upland valley hummed in my mountains. In the valley are boppies (isolated piles of big rounded boulders). These boppies have an abundant plant life so birds, reptiles and small mammals collect there. Set out traps in favorable spots in the bopple. Found a small cave where a porcupine had recently shed some quills. Saw two little striped mice playing on the humma boulder. When they saw me, they dodged under a huge rock. A few seconds out they came again. They seem to prefer daylight to darkness. In the evening I went hunting with a light way up on the mountain top. Saw the eyes of a Klip Spranger but it was too far away to shoot. Did not see any other animals. July 17 Caught two striped mice in the Klipfontein boppie, two small mice I couldn't identify, one small gerbil, four Cape Elephant Shrews. Shot a small snake and several lizards and skinks. Noticed a small Elephant Shrew by a rock. It was feebly running. I picked it up and noticed that it had been injured in one eye. I kept it for observation. Even though it was injured, occasionally it would leap 3 or 4 feet out of my hand. It moved its long nose about sniffing the air. Its eyes are very large and dark. The head is large in proportion to the rest of the body. Saw keeping four small front's Golden Mole alive in a box of sawdust and wood shavings. They were almost starved to death until I experimented by putting some dead lizards and skinks in their box. They ate the bodies immediately and began to pick up immediately at once.

Tom Larson 5 mi. E. Port Nolloth Namaqualand, S. Afr. July 18 Detected a Grants Golden mole containing two embryos. Observed the 4 Grants Golden moles in the box of wood shavings. I put the dead bodies of several skinks and lizards in the box. The hungry little males didn't hesitate to eat these, embryos and all. All that was left was the skin of the reptiles. The moles can dig rapidly in the sand as I observed. They will disappear in a few seconds when placed in soft sand. They are very powerful for their size, especially the front legs armed with shovel like digging claws. When placed on the floor they can run along quite rapidly - tho they are totally blind. I have heard them utter a faint squeak. When placed in a box with dead lizards they were attracted to them in a few minutes. Their sense of smell seems to be keenly developed. July 19 Caught one Golden mole no. 2298, one Oomys 2300, four Black-eared Elephant Shrews 2301, 2302, 2303, 2304, and one Namaqualand Sand Mole. The Elephant Shrews seem to be most active in the early morning. In the heat of the day they take cover under a bush pile, which leads or in their holes? They seem to relish the peanut butter and raisin bait. These shrews are infected with fleas. July 20 Today old Van de Kever caught one Golden mole for me, eleven Bush Stripes, five Elephant Shrews, two striped mice, and one Namaqualand Sand Mole. The four moles are still alive. Occasionally they come to the surface which leads me to believe they do otherwise in their native habitat.
