Port Nolloth, Namaqualand, S. Africa
July 12 Saw stores of succulent plant stems and leaves around the piles of sticks. Some had been dragged away to the lairways of the Bush Tommy's.
20 mi N. Port Nolloth, Dry River Bed In the afternoon I accompanied the engineer, Mr. Thompson, his wife, and four Danish carpenters on a trip to a dry river bed 20 miles north of Port Nolloth. The river bed was narrow and bordered by jagged rocks. Saw signs of harreg Desert Rat, Rock mice and other small rodents. Shot lizards and skinks that came out on the rocks to sun themselves. Saw three species of lizard and one species of skink.
July 13 Today I caught one gerbil, one Elephant Shrew, one Bush Tommy, one Namaqualand Sand Mole, and got three meerkats from Van Heever's son, Harry.
July 14 Van Heever had 14 Grant's Golden Moles for me today. Many of them were still alive in a pail which had some sand in the bottom. They dig frantically and move about quite rapidly. They are totally blind and have no visible trace of eyes. Their beautiful fur is of a soft fine quality, when you hold them in your hand they dry to crawl out between your fingers.
July 15 Went up to Steinhoff today 55 miles east toward Springbok. This is over 300 feet in the mountains. Went out with a light to hunt small animals but had no luck.
