Marathon, Texas, March 16 - 1924 Sunday. Walked most along Southern Pacific R.R. to culture 579 A, about 3 1/2 miles north of Marathon. Here is a very small exposure in white silt with the shales dipping steeply to the east, about 55 degrees. It is a greenish sandy shale with gritty sandstones, the latter in thin beds fine 1/2 inch to one foot thick. Some surfaces are replete with small pieces of coral, all casts showing very original fibrous condition. There are slightly semi-crumbled, and there are some very small angular conglomerates. Saw a few thin sandy impure limestones and those had a few crinoid stems and fragments of Fucostella. One of the sandstones are cast-in-folds (pulvatoites) trees. Go down descending toward an anticline there shall be the first shales or siltstone layer. Sand clay in the Unogronian, Just west of culture 579 A more of the same coral [fragments] in exposed. Here the casts traces are common. The sandstone layers are craggier, and conglomerate pebbles, up to 3 inch across, are

of the layers also them under movement there is also more sun--exactly, evidently there are strata of the shore. I have now come about half-mile across the strike from the last locality to mile post 150. Here there is a small cut through coarse near the apex of the arch, sandstones, some of small pebbled conglomerate and green shales, perhaps one half in stiff blue shales. The dip is about 75 degrees east and it is or all the way back to the first described place. One can see on either side a little hollowing pits all the way. The com- monest fossils are the gastropod bivalves. Towards share two specimens. either end of the cut there is a golden bed over the center of the arch. tectonic Later I see that this same tectonic feature is the apex of the arch, and in to be seen as a monument a little further south up the trail crosses the fence. Jon sketched two days later.

"One hundred feet east of the last mentioned" [correction] (comp. prof. S70) cut, the strata dips northeast at a low angle, falling 10 to 15 degrees. It is the same series. Therefore we have here about one mile from S70 the top floor and thus Surface of land E 1st 65 degree Bridgetown W 10 deg. 60 deg. 3/4 mile To the north, in another mile, plain, sand, I see no rays or mines on small hills. On the map, it is Perm. 5 to 8 miles Farther northeast, the rim of Permian lies in with the strata dipping gently in a direction from Marathon. plain done following. It appears to be as if the Marathon is made up of high folded and contorted (from S: E) Pelopses, over which the Permian lies unevenly, famously and transgressively. On a little hill about half mile S.W. 1 mile from S70 there is a little li. knoll or not li. Here the strata dip northeast. It may have been here that Buler's (the little fauna) listed: I saw no Opifex cancratus, but did see Lithoth. [illegible] I saw about ten species. Among them a large Nautilus, and others.

"This opening [illegible]. I think it is the Cicer form, but the sponge Antiphonella, and I may have the "Fasculina cylindrica". Just how but they hold about the same place as hid in the sections these cherts are I do not know. 5790 South of mile post 580 there is a little [illegible] with an escarpment facing the south. Here then is either an unconformity or a local overthrust. Darker lim sandstone Dip N well measured. E-NE. This is not an erosional unconformity, but only my local tectonic unconformity. The and compensating resides the gradual structure, shale hereabout are in smaller domes, and these shales and sandstones have moved to accommodate the gradual folding. It has the same strike as the build out in the east. Had no lunch, or started back to Marathon at 3 P.M. This Jesnes is according to the fossil evidence hist penn set ran in = about Cicer.

Marathon March 17-1924. Marathon. Too tired to make a days field trip. After breakfast called at the Barrage and found that the owner had been out with Baker, Hudden and others on a three months camping trip. Said he would let one have a Florida and orman by the day for $8.00. Agreed to go tomorrow to Leonard Coot, section. In the afternoon explored south of Marathon. See account many pages later under date of March 17-1924.

Leonard Mt. (Leetm?) after Mdder. "A section in the Silliam Canyon, extending from the west end of Leonard Mountains north along its east side, to where it joins on the plain south of the site of the old Tersey post office" Leonard Formation 1878 feet. 61% Li., 30% cl., 6% ss., 2% calp. (1) Mostly li., and drl. with some ss. and cml. In south scarp of Leonard Mt from base upward. This measurement is over west end of mt. Fusulina, Crinoid sp., and Foraminifera 908 (2) Li. in places cmf. Some cl. and ss. The li. are highly fossiliferous. Estimated at 350 (3) Li. changing to ss. and cml. with silicified ammonite, and other fossils. Just above 3 in cl. come 3 sp. of ammonites = dangerous.

Total thickness of Leonard Beotim = 6855 feet. Measured by Borman under guidance of Bose Hadden transect in 1916 gave 7000 feet. Hens formation below (2150') So 1258 foot through li. x dL. Tr shales with ammonites

In this section Udden refers this ammonite genera the Saptank (= Pennsylvanian) and on page 42 to the Wolfcamp (= Permian). The ammonites may look like Permian forms and yet the associated fossils are all Penn- sylvanian and not older than Cisur. There cannot be no unconformity at this place in the midst of the shales. Nor do I see the possibility of such until zone 27 is reached.

"This page is out of place, So 4 pages forward in continuation of this one" Marathon, Texas, March 20-1924. Thursday. The days fine and mild dilapidated Ford that looks like it will break down any minute. I start with a boy as chaperon for Wolfcamp, We go into the Hers ranch east of Ont. Leonard to make enquiries and then head directly for the little double buttes that lie in part of the lower part of the Sloan Mountains, at Wolfcamp. Above the bajada one goes across fairly unexplored hills, initially oolite, in a depth of about 180 ft., then appears a thick bedded li. 17 ft. thick (Beddins no. 7). Then follows about 100 more of green shales to a thicker li. (green II) that caps the buttes. I collected with the aid of a boy all day in these shales (green 8) and ranging in the lower half of the 80 ft. of this green, bit about 60 ammo units of which about 40 are good, I am not sure that I got the 12 species described from this place by Böse, but I know that I have

Marathon March 17-1924. Monday. In the afternoon explored along the road going south out of Marathon. Just beyond the dunes to the east of the road may be seen Virga shales with an occasional zone of sandstone, but once then followed lighter blue lithographic limestone. Among them is a thick zone of light gray sandstone or limestone composed of intraformational conglomerate. Most of them have flat limestone pebbles up to 6 inches long. Some near them are thinning out until the pebbles all angular and crushed together. Fossils are exceedingly scarce, always small and in my opinion beds that are once low crystal-line. In these occur Leptitites perfectly smooth and very small, Palmanella testudinaria, Lingulae very small, elongate and almost smooth, pieces of a residual gastrolite (?Dicellograptus), and exceedingly delicate Buthothyrus-like plants. Also some fragments of trilobites more distinct than any other. These beds stand nearly vertical at 80 degrees.

Also a piece of a large Trematis. See the four fossils collected. About all that. Isaac,

I am now on the down side of the road, and have come about 1/2 mile across the strike of the Vistula formation. Here again the intraformational conglomerate are present and the beds south Lefto- Hluso and Olicello or aptian. If this is true I am dealing with a syncline, and par than half of the thickness crossed should be about the thickness of the Vistula. onto my fail, I go into Here on the south grey road where the thfield to the east may be seen a thick bedded limestone really were a fine anticline. It strikes almost E. and W. with dips pitches to the W. N. by S. (Sharon's compass). Therefore if I have been coming over the syncline, then graphi- wellboring hits on the older beds just above this thick bedded li. I have crossed the southern limb of the anti- cline and therefore now in the strata. The beds are now more sandy with goss of thick arenac- eous limestone. I am a small clear one of another low hill and the dip remains almost the same - to the south. There still much intraformational conglomerate, but is less often

Throughout the Ord. series seen this afternoon there are many intraformational flat-pettle limestone from one to three foot thick. The flat pettles are less common in the lying sandstone, and there are none apt to be of angular limestone in size up to one inch but common of smaller. These concretion are now very westerous along the strike, some will peter out in 100 fot but more that could trace more longer than 300. They are local accumulations. In the sandstone one sees them very patchy. All the li. and so show some cross-bedding. The whole series is of very shallow water - tidal flats - and this explains why the fossils are or scarce. When present they are all diminutive

of the flat pettles kind, I have now come about one-quarter mile further anticlinal away. I have gone south another one-quarter-mile and the same sandy limestone with granular and flat pettles intraformational conglomerates continue. It is a higher series than the proiliforms ever seen first near Marathon. One mile further south I see the same white [illegible] shale shale looked at Saturday. The white shales or Ordovician Armaculites, I should be rising in the strata to it. In places current last then are some syncline folding to the west. Apparently the dips are not uniform, but are somewhat rolling. As we goes south I think one rises in the sec- tion, and passes fine shales with thin beds of lithographic limestone and once and once sandy materials with shales. Throughout the intraformational congl. are present.

The strata appear to lie in a series of folds then repeating the strata as we goes south, and get rising gradually into younger formations. Probably are that I can see of Middle Ordo- vician age. But passes only from the lowest lithographic li. Made no real attempt to collect in the sandy portion since it were looked very un promising.

Marathon, Texas, March 20 - 1924 Thursday Due four days since the beginning of this day, a good representation. The species are all small. Professor Bidden is not at all clear as to the age of these shales. He calls them at first Baptand (= Penn) and later calls them Dolf- camp and counts to place them in the Permian. I may have 25 other species of tivalros, gastriods, hackiords and corals, and all of these are typical Pennsylvanian. The association appears to me to be Cisco. Accordingly all the baptand and dolfcamp due to are Pennsylvanian and the Permian begins with a basal conglomerate, that Bidden sometimes calls his Iters and at other times [illegible] Leonard. In a later publication he does not use Iters. The contact between the Pennsylvanian and Permian is a little more = discordant.

"Accordingly there was no mountain making here at the close of the Pennsylvanian. The question now arises why is the Tensas or much more deformed than the later Pennsylvanian and Permian? Can the angular unconformity that I saw last Sunday be actually an angular unconformity. If so the Tensas should be Cretaceous, and the deformation post-Cretaceous. Does the Tensas = Starley-Jackson? Then at some time in the Pennsylvanian the sea again flowed into and over these Cretaceous strata making the unconformity and uplifting them. Just as the later Pennsylvanian in all = Canyon and Chico. Then a complete break followed by the Permian deposits that have a relative thickness of 6000 feet. Wolfcamp is upper Cretaceous Cretaceous is late Pennsylvanian"

Dimple and Hayden = Tesnus Tesnus = ? Bendian or earlier Perm. Deformation followed Tesnus and permits Baptank. Baptank in the transgression formation. Removal of sea only in this area Leonard - then the Permian trans- gression.

Marathon, Texas, March 21-1924, Friday With the old dilapidated Ford and the boy Lauffen went about 18 miles northwest to the junction of the Brad Canyon into the Lillian canyon. Here on the southeast side of a four mile ridge occurs some 25' or a thick reddish limestone about 64' but thick of the Permian (Basil formation) of Uddins Section #1-4. Here occur large Permian Fusulinids, some of which must be an inch long and nearly one-quarter inch thick. Also some large Lob- tidus but no Rickettsiaenia. One layer of pelitic limestone in relation with Ammonites. One can carve one's initials into the rock with the hammer, but as they weather out the oilicity, and as not good pencil marks they are to be seen by the thousands. Looked about 5 hours to get them, and I think have a representative lot. One sees almost no other fossils.

Permian etc of Marathon Texas. Extracts from Geol. of Texas Bull. 44, 1916 (1) " " " " " " VERDIA 1753, 1917. (2) The south-eastern portion of Texas, south to the Great Bend, of the Rio Grande, is known as the Cordillera Pro- vince, the most easterly region of this ext. area. It is also called the Colorado Plateau Province that extends from here westward into California. Here is the highest point in Texas, in El Capitan, 8690 feet above the sea. The Rio Grande level is 1500 feet, Sierra Mountains are just to the east of the Front Range. They (1) and other mts are the vanishing structures of the Front Ridge. The mts of the Trans Pecos were made "in the Pleiocene or (1) Pleistocene" (13) The next older deformation is that of the Ouachita Mts of the Late Pennsylvanian. It is said to have folded the earlier Penn., and over these folds lies the latest Penn. and the Penn. Over all these lies the Comanchian (13) Another time of deformation was "near the close of the Upper Cretaceous, and a fourth near the close of the Paleogene" (13). The Rio Grande was in existence early in Eocene time (21). (1) The Pecos came in with the Pleistocene (22) Ouachita deformation. The strata "were pressed together in numerous (1) close sharp folds" (106) "beneath which eroded and were outwashed herewith, the sea in late Penn. time" (106)

If time see it. Has ammonids 2 Leonard for. = 1845. Decidedly compl. at base. (How is what?) 11-15 Gord " = 1500. Fidrio " = 1063. Iron Mt, a Section no 3. Should priatry be seen. 2 15-19. Gillian Canyon, a Section no 4. See at least the lower part. 2 This is the layers and top Permian section = 13 miles long and 6855 feet thick. There is primarily ar road in Gillian Canyon. See in detail at least Leonard (1878), Gord (684) for. 19-23 Rest nowg are dolomite Fidrio(1700), Gilliam (743); and v Tenex (1500). See for Gord formation ammonites, junctins of Road and Gillian Section no. 5 = Iron Iron Canyon. See de Vane slip 3 & 4 2 23-27. Does not appear to be rich in fossils. Section no 6. is good for Gord formation. Has some Gord for. ammonites.

Wolf camp or lectini no 7, see it first. Begins in Baptist and goes through Wolfcamp, Hen, Leonard, Ford and Vidrio. Brose's best ammonite locality in Baptist and Wolfcamp.

(2) Upper Cambrian (Brester Formation). Thickness unknown. 1 Occurs 5 to 30 miles south of Marathon Dark colored ds. and shales (35). 2 Thickness 100 to 200' Has a few tracks, and 1 trillbite (81). Fauna like Nevada. Ordovician (Marathon series). Lower Ord., dark ds. and sh., at least 300' (300-500) Fossils 100' below top. Ordovician fossils (see @ 82). Bl. and green and blue sh. 300' no fossils Dark then redded lie. 130'. L. Ord. Bellmontum (2) 84. Green, gray and Hard sh., and brown ds. 100' no fossils. (Middle Ord., yellowish-brown sh. and thin gray lie. 375'. Has fossils - Earliest Trenton (2) 85). The above sequence is not found in one place; uncertain. Chaparillos Chief Lower part = Mid. Ord. Baker thinks the Tesnus = Otavie. Strait of anticline of Tesnus beds is at junction of Rough and Lower San Francisco creeks. Throughout the S.E. area the Tesnus contact forms in overthrust, (104).

Tesnus (continued). Fossils occur in Tesnus west from Dugout Creek to Permo-Carb. 2. These fossils are equivalent Pennsylvanian and cannot be of the 101-105. Stanley. See list mf. 104. On Bedins Ranch N.W. of Marathon fossils can't be had. Those listed mf. 105 are high Pennsylvanian. Among them Spirifer tex- anus, and Entelites hemiplicatus Harris ranch south 2 miles from 180 has Fusulina, Compita sub- filita, Chonetes genulifin, Spirifer cemeratus, etc. None of these fossils indicate Bend or Stanley. They are the equivalent Pennsylvanian series.

Dimple formation, 925' Dimple hills to G.E. / Marathon. Too far away to go there. (1) Li., Haed chert, Haell sh. 46 Li. have a few marine fossils. (2) Can be seen along O. R. R. R. between Drammond and Heymond (935 feet). 105-106. Also to be seen 1/8 mile S. of Marathon (700S. 15 E.). Has some Perm. fossils. Also W. of Heymond, 1/4 mile. Here fossils appear to be varied and common. Heymond formation, 500' (2) H. and K. Lime Tresses. 107. Can be seen E. of Heymond along R.R. Day, may be tresses overthrust up on Dimple. And Dimple forms to the like tresses. Baker then has a time of Oxt. erating (107-111). Folding and overthrusting from S.E. to N.W. Does not appear to be certain of his facts (108). Was there folding at all at the time? Is the structure post Permian? Post-Tertiary with diorite and neathalence = Permian times. around 2000' Baptank formation, over 1000' Troutt tr. = Cicer. (1) Position in column not certain known. Cmpl. at these, alt., mitt le., N. & S. sh. Rich m fossils @ p.38 47 Middle sh., mitt le. Upper marly le. Baptank is 24 miles N.E. of Marathon; extends 15 miles S.W. (2) Lower Baptank rich in fossils. Seen 3 miles S. of Baptank (38). Also 4 miles W. of Marathon, most m. of R.R. See list of forms p. 38-39. Have Bakistoceras smithi and Tegalifera. Upper Baptank seen in sections 7, 8, 9. = 520 feet, Correlated with Elmdale of Kansas. See list of fossils p.40. Helden does not know if there is an unconformity below (46) with Heymond. Baker and Boese saw an unconformity between Lower Baptank and Heymond. Look for angular unconformity at the Baptank, and beneath Wolfcamp.

Golfcamp formation, 500ft. This in section no.7. Orelics BaptauK. Mostly shale, only a little sli. (2) This place is only abandoned house (orlie here) given to the south of two huttles located at not 61/2 miles East and some 2 miles North of the East end of Leonard Mt. It also occur 12 species of comminuties, see p.42. Also Johnrogerina. The same comminid design

Leonard formation, 1800' - 2300' (near Borel'). Upper part laminated s.s. with li., chert and sh. Lower " third li., in part cmpl. Base sh. and ss. with li., In another place to atop the base is a cmpl. 20'-200', and " unconformity makes the Plan. Best seen in section no 2, Also in 3, 4, 7. Boulders, pebbles and sand in reefs are li., What does this mean? Fossils abound and thus first, Other fauna occurs about the center. Conformity thus first. Cephalopods in lower or middle part " " large shale forming the upper 600 feet of the Leonard (p. 47). For other forms see pp. 45-48. Richthofenia 2 sp. Word formation, 600' - 800' Where uncorrd = 1000' Upper 380' li., ss., dsl. with chert and some ss. Mid. 120' ss. Lower 120 third li. Vidrio formation, 2000' (1700' in Bellian Canyon). dsl. li., a dsl. with some li. The Vidrio the most conspicuous formation of the Glen Ant., thence the name (Glenish in Glen). Straps the ridges No diagnostic fossils are known. Should be looked for li., and there are traces (p.).

William formation, 2600' Ls and dd. often brecciated. Manioc atre. (2) Type area William Canyon. Say it is 7400' thick. This does not appear attractive. No fossils other than small Foraminifera Thin bedded dd. limestone. Terry formation. At least 1400' (2) Undraped. Oolonite like Vidrio Only Fresulina near top. Objs that Vidrio-William-Terry have a thickness of 3800' Comanchean Transposed on an irregular lithography.

On page 29 this bed is referred to the Baptonian (= Penn.) and elsewhere (p. 42) he refers it to Wolfcamp (= Permian).
