LSH 0203 Red + Grey mottled CLAYST W ROOT CASTS Most impt insight from This series of locs. WAS THAT the D₁/D₂ bdy does falls below the paleosol zone by about 10 m. This means that the base of D₁ is actually in the late PALEOCENE! Tschudy had a paper in 70's claiming P₆ pollen from some locs in the Denver Basin and this would explain these seemingly anomalous results. I revised Kirks diagram of the STRAT of the basins on a previous page to reflect

This SITUATION. Basal CONTACT of D2 is erosional. D2 in this portion of the distal basin has coarsely arkosic sands w/ qtz & feldspar frags. Amazonite also reported to occur. Lignites are thin. D1 is much finer grained in general and lignitic w/ thick lignites in this portion of the basin. At approximate contact here there is a distinct topographic bench between them. 20m below CONTACT is a Big Dirty Type 8M Coal w/ numerous ash fall Tonsilns that has burned to form a clinker in places.

7/26/02 The Paleosol level has channels of white arkosic lithomitic coarse to grit sized clasts interbedded w/ soilified clays. There are limonite spherule horizons also present in the sand channels. At least 4 paleosols were observed in the 10-15 m. of the Paleosol zone { Kirk just got a reading on of ~43,000 on a paleosol in Brazil which would give a minimum duration of 160,000 yrs for the zone. In typical paleosol fashion the paleosol lower body bleeds down into the D2 lignitic sequence below. The lignites sometimes have silcrete crusts but resist the oxidation, bUT however the clastic

UNITS associated w/ The LIGNITES show signs of ALTERATION penetrating at least 10-15 m below The CHanneled PALEOSOL horizon Theoretically the effects of The PAleosol episode could reach below below The CONTACT into D1, but this was not observed. 7/29/02 Summary Winthrop fm is arkosic at T0 and becomes siliclastic in basal 300', Fossil plants are found in sandy and clayey units throughout or at least 10 levels in the unit T0 within 30m of the base. The basal several sands have larger amounts of Widdington- itites than those above It may be that it is deriving a larger sample from the conifer woodlands surrounding the faw/marnder zone where the majority of the fossil plantary record appears to be derived. 7/31/02 Fossil leaf types according To the Lithology Sapindopsis & Laurophyllum dominate in the shales Araliopsides in the siltites, and WP23 large & small in the coarsest beds. Similarly among the ferns Cladophlebis seems most common in the shale. I do not have an impression of the associations of Gleichwites and Matonidium but Matonidium may be more Common at Ian's original site (02-2226).

SECTION at Ian Miller's SITES in Boesel Canyon Show no confined channels and have a relatively low RATIO of CLAY to sand seem to be the product of deposition in the lower braid belt or upper/ meander belt as the author of the thesis on the sedimentology says ( Rau ) , Plants occur as mats at the base of clay sand interbeds or dispersed in them sand beds above the base of this sequence. - dispersed < plants in mats 3m
