466 5-18-31 Stapfylea pinnata L. Cote I 272, Box 9, B/CP Shrub in grounds Temple, Alton 1 vs. opp. compound, deciduous. Stipules deciduous, whitish, almost linear, 24 x 4 mm, entire with a few minute teeth. Lf line pet- isle 6-8 in all bright green & glabrous except for white hairs on each side of mid-rib at base of each lft. beneath. Lfts 5, the 2 pairs lateral mes opp vs areile, each with one delicate, subulate stipule-like appendage 5mm long at base. Terminal lft or stellate 1/2 in with 2 similar appendages about 1 mm. Lfts oval or ovate, about 3 1/2 x 1 1/4 in, shortly acuminate, rounded at base, finely dentate, each lftb with whitish tip (20x) which is the end of an inconspicuous vein (one of three which form network around edge). Rachis grooved above leaf towards tip. Diff. terminated on new growth, slender, dlfh, pendant; on glabrous bright green peduncle, a compound cyme with bracts similar to stipules. Inf. collects with 2 opp branches and a central stellae (1 in vs 2 in) each with clusters of fls (6-18 in cluster). Ped- icels slender, about 1 cm long, articulated near the base. Fls 5/8 in large. Sepals almost erect, pinkish forward tip, outside. Petals erect. Disk conspicuous. Ovaris 2 or 3 with style connects only at tip. Ovules usually 4 in each ovary (see 7-14-31)
