Petals narrowly obovate, 19x10mm, broadly notched, tapering to base with def claw, the calyx being def visible (prom above bet. the petals to width of 1-2mm) except at very base of petal which is hea- ily bearded on edge with white hairs which completely fill up the space. Stamen column (20x) very lightly starry pubescent. Carpels 10 (in 2 cases counted), glabrous. Fl abt 3cm diam; petals bright reddish purple with darker veins. This might be considered M. silvestris L. Cote I 236, Bon 58, BVH 90, 4568 BMJCP 484 except that none of these manuals mention the bearded claws.
