6-24-31 base, the 3d quite separate. Calyx 7.5mm long. the lobes broadly triangular, lightly starry pubescent. Petals narrowly obovate, 19x10mm, broadly notched, tapering to base with def claw, the calyx being def visible (prom above bet. the petals to width of 1-2mm) except at very base of petal which is hea- ily bearded on edge with white hairs which completely fill up the space. Stamen column (20x) very lightly starry pubescent. Carpels 10 (in 2 cases counted), glabrous. Fl abt 3cm diam; petals bright reddish purple with darker veins. This might be considered M. silvestris L. Cote I 236, Bon 58, BVH 90, 4568 BMJCP 484 except that none of these manuals mention the bearded claws.
