EASTERN GRID SURVEY NO. 11, EAC 20 Survey Itinerary: 07 August 1000 Depart Long Beach 08 August 0900 Enter Eastern Grid at Point "ASH " 16 August 1215 Depart Eastern Grid at Point "Oak" 17 August 1300 Arrive Long Beach Survey Personnel: Robert L. Support Vessel: USS Granville S Hall, AG 40 The excellent coverage obtained in this grid survey characterizes the fine cooperation extended by officers and crew of the Hall. Methods: Complete diurnal observations were taken while in the grid area. Nocturnal observations were limited to a few hours each night in the grid. Nine hours of laying-to time have been incorporated in the grid schedule. During this survey these hours were used to experiment with methods of capturing birds at night. A mist net and search lights were used with only mild success on one night. Subsequent attempts at mist netting were hampered by the full moon which illuminated the ship so that the search lamps had little effect. In addition a thirty foot piece of white material was rigged in one of the exposed passageways on the main deck and illuminated with search lights. This failed to attract birds, presumably due to bright moon conditions. The whaler was used for collecting on two days while in the grid. Generally choppy seas prevented its further use. Data handling has been modified during this survey in an attempt to simplify processing of these data. A chart of the nominal grid track has

been constructed with a series of overlays of actual grid track, environmental data, and parametric analysis sectors. This pictorial summary of grid activities has been photographed; these photographs serve as figures in this report. The negatives are included and for filing in the Washington office. The grid was divided into nine analysis areas (see Appendix A for coordinates of these divisions). Eastern Grid Survey 11 Discussion: Sixty degree temperature, winds from the NNW at 8-20 knots, and heavy overcast held throughout the survey. One interesting area was encountered at ca. 34°56'元 - 122°50' west where two slicks were noted. The slicks were apparently the result of a confluence of water masses or convention cells. Red Phalaropes were abundant on these slicks. Of interest during this and EGS-10 was the complete lack of Velleta, the "sailors before the wind." It was abundant in June. Diurnal observation 114.5 hours and 1054 miles were recorded. Two species, Leach's Storm Petrels and Red Phalaropes accounted for 85.7 percent of 774 birds recorded. The distribution of these two species prompted us to adopt a new system of grid data analysis. The North-South dividing line has been replaced by two north-south lines yielding three east west sections. Appendix A lists coordinates for divisions and labeling for the sectors. The reader is referred to Figures 2 and 3 for graphic illustration of the advantages of the new analysis system. It allows a more refined and detailed breakdown of quantitative distributions within the grid. SPECIES ACCOUNTS Black-footed Albatross Number recorded: 44 Albatross numbers were relatively constant throughout the survey; were recorded on each day during the survey.

specimen of Delphinus, an alarming number of storm petrels were observed. During that same time from on board ship relatively few birds were re- recorded. That these birds sit on the water, their habit of flying in the trought of the swell, and their dark color is probably responsible for our recording fewer of these birds than are actually present in the area. Linear density of this species was highest in sector 3 of the grid. The concentration was close to Point Ash. A similar concentration was noted near Point Dogwood during the last survey. It is possible that this population concentration has shifted northward, but such is not a safe general statement. On 8 August when the concentration was recorded dauring this survey the seas were calm. This allowed the observers to see and record more birds. However, as far as can be seen from FIGURE 3 densities were greatest on the eastern side of the grid and became generally smaller in the western portion of the grid. Red-billed Tropicbird Number recorded: 2 Number collected: 1 One Red-billed Tropicbird was collected 8 August at 34°56' Original text: N - 122°01', just inside Point Ash (sector 3). The other bird was seen on 10 August at 34°09' N - 121°52' W also in sector 3 - both birds in the northeast sector. Red Phalarope Number recorded: 236 Number collected 1 Phalarope densities were highest in sectors 2 and 3. The concentra- tion appeared in sector 2 along the slicks created by the "confluence area." One hundred ten birds were recorded in two observations on these slicks. The birds were sitting well dispersed in the slick water. Phalarope Species Most of these birds were probably Red Phalaropes.
