1 1937 MAY 19 Note Zostrops flav. seem to be mostly juveniles of 5 shot all were juvenile only SN505 worth shinning, others had bare chins strongest juvenis mouthing act Whereas Z. lat. seems to have or almost complete mould. Both these being four makes their moult later. 2 examples fully examined on oppsite page.

9 ERROMANGA #1. 23/5/37. For 4 days have been closely studying Just flow, & am still undecided whether there are 2 species present on Erromanga. Our palm gum both + jara incline slightly larger than an idea I sent some away by post. Probably it was mouth is responsible for the apparent variation.

Brighter than at lower levels but variation gradual + with might be with local climate. leaves, many males at this altitude have an almost warm orange tint in the yellow but as many are indistinguishable from the pale yellow of lower levels. I show a general tendency towards warmer tinged unders but whi males vary greatly without about definite lines of demarcation. Possibly is due to small condition: young ♂ may show a warmer brown on back but are almost indistinguishable from them at lower levels. Raw test in area put in details into log. TOT 164 W/86 TL63. 21 FUTUNA, So. 5th July 1937. dull, fine, overcast SE wind fresh inclined towards showers. ROUTE. Walk from Mission men's homestead up precipitous rises or very steep slope to plateau 2000' ASL (8300' feet), across plateau to above Herald Bay then down to coast ridge and back along cliff slopes on NW face to mission. VEGETATION Vegetation around mission is native garden lands, coconuts & breadfruit sloping 15 to 20ft south. This area is very restricted. Slopes rise very steeply in semi terraces or sheer cliffs in 3 main stages / These slopes have a low 10-15' scrub in places, in places there are open grass patches small in area mostly. On the plateau top which is cut up in gullies 20ft deep near the edges with a general level in the centre the whole being a basin with one side somewhat higher than the other. The vegetation is very very dense rain forest, tall trees are about 30ft high to 40ft in gullies, with much hanging bearded moss on limbs, many orchids (5 distinct kinds flowering + 3 not in flower). Many of the trees are the red flowering tree of Tanna Highlands [below this is the royal flowers of Tahiti] most of the trees are flowering lando. Under them are numerous shrubs, slab ferns small ferns, vines creepers, wild yam, moss etc very very dense. There is also a lot of dry taro or piki taro on which the natives live. The slopes into Herald Bay are the same as the other side, but perhaps not quite so much sheer precipice vegetation the same. The NW cliff slopes back to mission are miscel native gardens, coconuts, breadfruit etc. SPECIES Birds seen by me were Zost flour, Aligara, Platyrhizus Sugi, Dicula pacifica, Columba nivosa, Manopygia, Myrmela, Philejohra, Halagon, Turdus, Charnyopsopsis, Tjeto, Demigretta 2 plus, Eudymania, Cacocantis, Collocalia vrog, chalcophaps. SPEC DATA Cacocantis. Several heard, one seen appears same as Tanna, c? not very common. Inhabits native garden lands, cliff slopes mostly, not heard on plateau but we don't go there. Natives have no name for it. Say at is a very sweet animal. Tjeto Common, inhabits cliff caves & plateau top & visits lowlands appears same as Tanna. Local name RURU. Collocalia vrog. Common in all places appears same as Tanna. White day only one species present. Local name KUPKABA. Halagon chloris. Common on most places, appears true chloris, out adult is semi buff, adult white. May be different but spec but appears the same. Local name SUKALI.

23 FUTUNA. 5th JULY, 1937. SPEC DATA.GNT. TURDUS Common on plateau but shy, appears similar to Janna in rapid glimpses, female looked browner under. Few come down cliff slopes but not below 600ft ASL. Local name Calls same as Janna. Local name KARSIS. RHIPIDURA Not common anywhere. Appears larger than Janna in bush. One shot but lost in underbrush. Local name MENU TAHTUKONS. MYAGRA. M&F. Same name for both. Common in all areas, appears same as Janna, F may have more extensive tan unders than Janna, 2 specimens shot were badly damaged, called locally called FAKATONG AFUATA. MYZOMELA. Common in all areas. Same as Janna. Local name MANUMEAR. ZOEST FLAV. Common on plateau + fairly common on cliff slopes not common at lower levels. Appears same as Janna. Only one Zost. on Futuna. Local name FURISAYU. DEMIERETTA. Common, 2xun, whites not common. Local name MATUKV. PTILOPUS GREVI fairly common at all levels. Appears same as Janna + elsewhere. Local name adult KUKVTAPU SUBAD KUKUNGONU. DUCULA PACIFICA Found only on plateau top fairly common, several heard calling none seen. Natives say same as Janna. Local name RUPAE. COLUMBA VIT. Same as Janna. Common on Plateau + cliff sides, few at lower levels. Local name. FEI-UH-WAE MACROPSYIA RUFFA2 Common on plateau top + fairly common at lower levels+ cliff face slopes. Appears same as Janna. They be warmer brown, + less colour across unders of wing primaries. (quite excam. may be SU BAD) Local name TUFURUTOEY. CHALCOPHAPS Common at lower levels + fairly common on cliff slopes. eVt seen on plateau but is present there. Same as Janna, local name TU CHARMOSYNORIS PALMARUM Very common on plateau top feeding on flowering trees+ shrubs, occasionally visits lower levels cliff slopes. Feed in flocks, strong but call is weak + thin, alarm weak shriek, feeding call not rather sweep low whistle, Local name SARAKURAH. Is arrotaki + occasionally cluster of 2 or 3 hang on each other+ sometimes fights fall to ground, but mostly play about in friendly manner, is not shy, inclined to be curious will come to call. EUDYEMIS Common on plateau, visits other levels. Hidden lizards (Gibby?) eVt very shy. Local native name MAN WATA. Many common tan collar flying fosus seen. Bats small absent. Snails found at all levels common on plateau. Rats not seen. Generally speaking Bird life increasing with altitude.

Petronica Note B+g + Juv, easily distinguished in field. Appears in family parties of 4, appears occasionally as 2 to 1 female in which case party generally 5, easily turned close by "chip chip" calls. Appears on coastal flats. One heard calling & seen 2/8/37 within 1 mile of sea r few feet above sea level. Becomes more common about 1000ft + increases in numbers in the forest which starts a little above 1200 this side of the island.
