21 FUTUNA, So. 5th July 1937. dull, fine, overcast SE wind fresh inclined towards showers. ROUTE. Walk from Mission men's homestead up precipitous rises or very steep slope to plateau 2000' ASL (8300' feet), across plateau to above Herald Bay then down to coast ridge and back along cliff slopes on NW face to mission. VEGETATION Vegetation around mission is native garden lands, coconuts & breadfruit sloping 15 to 20ft south. This area is very restricted. Slopes rise very steeply in semi terraces or sheer cliffs in 3 main stages / These slopes have a low 10-15' scrub in places, in places there are open grass patches small in area mostly. On the plateau top which is cut up in gullies 20ft deep near the edges with a general level in the centre the whole being a basin with one side somewhat higher than the other. The vegetation is very very dense rain forest, tall trees are about 30ft high to 40ft in gullies, with much hanging bearded moss on limbs, many orchids (5 distinct kinds flowering + 3 not in flower). Many of the trees are the red flowering tree of Tanna Highlands [below this is the royal flowers of Tahiti] most of the trees are flowering lando. Under them are numerous shrubs, slab ferns small ferns, vines creepers, wild yam, moss etc very very dense. There is also a lot of dry taro or piki taro on which the natives live. The slopes into Herald Bay are the same as the other side, but perhaps not quite so much sheer precipice vegetation the same. The NW cliff slopes back to mission are miscel native gardens, coconuts, breadfruit etc. SPECIES Birds seen by me were Zost flour, Aligara, Platyrhizus Sugi, Dicula pacifica, Columba nivosa, Manopygia, Myrmela, Philejohra, Halagon, Turdus, Charnyopsopsis, Tjeto, Demigretta 2 plus, Eudymania, Cacocantis, Collocalia vrog, chalcophaps. SPEC DATA Cacocantis. Several heard, one seen appears same as Tanna, c? not very common. Inhabits native garden lands, cliff slopes mostly, not heard on plateau but we don't go there. Natives have no name for it. Say at is a very sweet animal. Tjeto Common, inhabits cliff caves & plateau top & visits lowlands appears same as Tanna. Local name RURU. Collocalia vrog. Common in all places appears same as Tanna. White day only one species present. Local name KUPKABA. Halagon chloris. Common on most places, appears true chloris, out adult is semi buff, adult white. May be different but spec but appears the same. Local name SUKALI.
