Drome River, Alaska
Heavy wind with rain from the east, started about 0200.
Wind up to 40 knots at times. Tent leaking on my side.
Checked lines about 0900. Not sarked checking the last
two lines, Rick feeling better but has throbbing headache
at times. Tent ridgepole about to give. We looked it
as best as possible last night, but it's getting worse.
Rick walked to the trail camp to look for a long
pole to hold up the ridgepole. Didn't find anything
but came back with a good idea. Fixed the ridgepole
by moving the front pole back to the middle of the
Tent. Rain stopped about 1300 and wind came down to
about 15-20 knots. Spent the day drying out wet
clothes and wet bedding. Checked traps about 1900.
Half of the four caught were wet from the rain.
This means they were caught between the morning
trap check and about 1300 when the rain stopped.
The trap record tends to demonstrate how beneficial
the dark (?) hours are as the biggest catch is in the
morning. Saw 2 jaegers during the evening run
at a distance appeared to be parasitics but may
be young Pomarines. We saw 10 caribou across
the river last night but no others in immediate
area. Noticed how red the Arctophila is and how most
of willow is dying. Other vegetation still mostly green,
the Eriophorum vegetation is part yellow (upper half) but
there seems to be more cotton breaks on the high poly grass
